What is the best futuristic racing game?

rickonker

CAGiversary!
Nintendo has the F-Zero series, Sony has the Wipeout series, and MS has Quantum Redshift. Are there any that I'm missing?

The only one I've played is the original F-Zero, which was a fun game and also had kickass music. I like the idea of futuristic racing, so does anyone have any recommendations?

Stun Runner.

I had plenty of fun with this on my Atari Lynx a little over 10 years ago. It's also on Midway's Arcade Classics 3 disc.

X-treme G3 on the PS2.

Tube Racer on the GC. (Just don't)

San Francisco Rush 2049 on the DC is awesome.

the ssx series imo is the best futuristifc race there is unless you mean car racer then i dunno since i havent played one of those in a while outside of the midnight club series which isnt futuristic.

Have any of you guys played Quantum Redshift? I remember it looked slightly appealing on the Xbox, but I never got around to playing it. I just looked it up on the Xbox360 backwards compatability list and it is indeed on there. If anyone can provide me with some positive impressions I may have to pick it up. Help me out guys!

I'm going to have to try some of these out. Quantum Redshift is supposed to be the best one on Xbox or Xbox 360, but no Live play.

fuck yeah.

I like F-Zero the best out of games we're seriously mentioning though rather then just tossing out in a pissing contest.

If we're talking about games nobody here has played, I'd say F-Zero AX Monster Ride. It's an arcade game, and there are only two, one in Tokyo and one in London.

My favorite is the original F-Zero game. Wipeout XL was great as well

It's a great game but can get difficult on the faster diificulty levels. The tracks are well designed and fun to race on (one track has you underwater for part of the race, another gives you lots of air time). I bought it for $9.99 a few years ago and thought it was well worth it. You can probably get it for under $5 now.

Weapons also play a big factor in the game. Each character has a rival and it's satisfying to blow up your opponent on the last lap of the race by banking your powerups (you win cash from each race to upgrade your weapons, turbo and shield)
Kinetica for the PS2 was good; well, the demo was pretty fun.
Seriously one of my favorite games and definitely my favorite racing.

Damnit, I was going to say Uniracers too...I guess that could be considered futuristic though because do you see any sweet unicycles doing tricks with no one on them present day? No.

I don't think SSX fits into the futuristic racing genre. Regardless, I think SSX and SSX Tricky were probably the most surprisingly good games I ever played (surprisingly because I didn't really expect a snowboarding game from EA to be that great).

I remember buying Quantum Redshift on release day and being extremely disappointed. Calling it a "generic Wipeout clone" is too much of a compliment.

Another vote for F-Zero GX.

Imo wipeout is still the king. QR's sense of speed just didnt cut it for me and the latest xtreme g(cant remember the name) was the closest thing to wipeout. I couldn't get into the f zero series, something about it just felt very generic although the speed was there.

hmm, its close between F-Zero and Wipeout but I will have to go with F-Zero on N64 or Gamecube. Now if you can combine the music of Wipeout with the F-Zero then you would have the best future racer ever.

I love the original F-Zero and most of the Wipeout games (especially XL-haven't played Wipeout Pure yet though which is supposed to be the best).

I haven't liked and of the more recent F-Zero games (haven't tried the second GBA one though).

EDIT: Changed to say Wipeout Pure rather than Fusion. Got them mixed up.

Wipeout XL. It looked awesome (still does), played great, had the best soundtrack EVER, and introduced most of America to Red Bull. :D

1) Wipeout 3
2) F-Zero GX

In that order.

Also give Hydro Thunder on on Midway Arcade Treasures a shot.

Many WipeOut fans have fond memories of WipeOut XL -- it is a graphical tour-de-force, and its impact and style were unpassable for its time.

However, WipeOut 3 IMHO is a more thorough game, and I find it more appealing. WipeOut 3's strength's lie with its easier to use control scheme and support for dual sticks that was missing in WipeOut XL. And, WO3 still has the great music and visual stylings from Designer's Republic. WipeOut 3 has a huge number and variety tracks, unlockable ships, and 4 or 6 (I can't remember) levels of increasing difficulty.

WipeOut Fusion is a decent entry in the WipeOut series, but suffers without the touch of Designer's Republic -- this shows in its vehicle design and overall style. Fusion has an interesting vehicle upgrade system, it's well polished, it's PS2 environmental touches are beautiful, but it is missing that "something special" that was part of previous iterations. Still worth your money, especially if u have never played a WipeOut Game before.

WipeOut XL has an older control scheme and a steeper learning curve. WipeOut 3 introduced what is the current scheme in use.

I don't know how I forgot about that game. RNRR was fucking awesome. I still play it occasionally.

I forgot about Rock & Roll Racing too. I rented it back on the SNES, and played through it again last year on the GBA. It is one of the best racers out there.

If the question had been 'what are the TWO best Futuristic Racing games?' Then WipeOut 3 would have been my second choice. I agree with everythig you said in your post, except that I wasnt as big a fan of the track design/layout in WO3. And whilee the Sasha soundtrack was awesome, I still like the various AstralWerks artists on XL better. And also since XL came first, I think the design and beauty of it had more of an impact on me. I expected WO3 to be great, but XL came out of left field, for me anyway. You really cant go wrong with either game, and both belong in anyones PS1 collection.

Wipeout XL for me felt like the true sequel to F-Zero. Gave me the same vibe for whatever reason. And for whatever reason, the F-Zero games haven't done it for me. Well, most of them have been way too hard, but even the first GBA one didn't work for me despite using mode-7 style graphics.

Hands down, any Wipeout; my order of the series is:

Wipeout 2097/XL, Wipeout Pure (European Edition), Wipeout 3, Wipeout Fusion, Wipeout Pure (US Edition), Wipeout (Saturn), Wipeout (PSX), Wipeout 64

(List will probably be updated once Wipeout PS3 is released; it's the only reason I want one, and I learned from the PS2, just wait till it comes out)

F-Zero AX is another favorite of mine, but I only played it once, and GX is adequate home version.

Extreme G is a so-so series at best, the control on XGRA was extremely loose and disconjointed.
What's the difference between Wipeout Pure in the US and Europe?
Since there was a large delay between the launch of the PSP in Europe and the Launch of the PSP in North America & Japan, there was a lot of added downloadable content that can only be gotten with the European edition. There were a boatload of new race teams and a bunch of new songs and tracks. It's a much more engrossing overall experience.

Darn. I wonder if they added back any of that stuff to the greatest hits version?

I'd say Hydro Thunder on DC (or in Midway Arcade Classics 3 on XB, PS2, or GC), then Jet Moto 2 or 3 on PS (though I haven't played them in quite a while).

I remember those Jet Moto games. I couldn't stomach them after Wave Race 64 :) They might have been great, but man did Wave Race spoil me.

I agree with you on many levels. I always wanted WO3 to = WO2 in terms of aesthetic impact and it's visual design (complete with RedBull Ads.) I ended up picking WO3 over WO2 two years back, when I went back to play both games some more, and just found WO3 to "play" better -- in terms of control, accessibility, rewards (unlockables), not being as painfully difficult, and my personal overall satisfaction. Both games are awesome, and it really is a toss-up as to which one is best -- considering how cheap you can buy them, they are both well worth the money.
