I know there's a few fans of the series that roam these threads. I need some advice on what's the best of the series. I currently have DW: Gundam 2 (which I love) and DW6: Empires (which I'm trying to get into but not enjoying it as much, still it's fun)

Also if someone could give me a breakdown of the series I'd appreciate it. All the titles make it a little confusing from Samurai Warriors XL to Warriors Orochi to Empires. I don't have a clue on which ones are worth playing and which are a pass or even if a certian game plays diffrently than the rest.

They all play basically the same, I didn't enjoy DW6 as much as the ones that came before it. They decided to change weapons for at least a couple of characters that really made them less enjoyable to play as IMO. I personally liked Warriors Orochi due to it having the characters from both DW and SW in it, but basically anything but DW6 was worth playing for me since I am a fan of them. I would suggest Warriors Orochi to you over the others if you want a mix of characters to choose from and don't really care to get all of them since they are basically all the same.

I used to be seriously into Dynasty Warriors, so I'll try to give you the lowdown.

DW3 is when the series started to get really good; arguably the best of the series.

DW4 is my favorite and IMO none of have matched this one in terms of fun. Gets a lot of flack for the leveling system, but I liked it better than finding them "in the wild"

DW5 was not bad, it took some elements from 3 and 4 and made a more polished product

DW6 I haven't been able to get into, but it's not a bad game. Adds some minor tweaks to 5, and has major character changes (in terms of their play style)

SW is very similar to Dynasty Warriors, only set in feudal Japan. It has a bit more of a "ninja" feel I guess you could say. 1 had really annoying and tedious "fortress" parts that thankfully were removed from 2. I would recommend 2; it was almost as fun for me as DW4 was.

Warriors Orochi is a Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors match-up. It has an odd 3 person system that allows you to pick 3 warriors at once and switch between them on the fly. I had fun with it, but the story is pretty shitty. I didn't get a chance to play #2.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam was really as well IMO; I'm still looking to pick up number two for a decent price. Has the same hack and slash feel, only with mechs. Coolest part is being able to fly

The Empires spin-offs I could never get into. They try to make Dynasty Warriors more strategic, but I never really got the hang of it. I'd give them a pass.

Any of the XL games are basically expansion packs; they add some new levels and characters, as well as a new, more powerful 6th weapon for each character (at least that's how they were on the PS2).

Hope this helps somewhat

Thanks for the run down of the series, that really helps. From what you wrote Warriors Orochi sounds appealing.

I've only played a few hours of DW6: Empires but I haven't done anything strategic yet.

Yo Rod,

I highly recommend Warriors Orochi 2. I enjoy both of the Orochi games the best (although I generally just skip the story in these games.)

I also really enjoyed Samurai Warriors 1. 2 was okay, but the camera really sucked I felt like I could never see the action.
wish they would make another Kessen game
Agreed. Bladestorm is the spiritual successor, but it didn't have the epic presentation of a Kessen game.

didn't know that was a strategy game, just thought it was a DW game placed in Europe.

Orochi 2 (for the 360) has really bad slowdown in two player split screen mode. Otherwise, it's a pretty good game. Easier than some other DWs because of the three character thing. The other two you're not using do heal while you're playing the third one.

DW6: Empires is getting better. I think I'll stick with it for the time being. I just hated going into a battle only to have one uber strong enemy kill me in 3-4 hits. I guess I shouldn't find it too annoying since you don't really lose anything.

Empires does takes the DW formula and makes it a little more complex. Some might like that but I actually perfer a more dumbed hack n' slash. I'm considering on just popping DW: Gundam 2 back in and try to finish off the acheivments. I always planned on getting back to it anyways.

Hmm figured I would bump this since they had DW6: Empires on clearance at Target. It was 27.98 so not the cheapest but now I am debating on taking it back. I was just hoping for a straight hack n slash since I miss playing the old Dynasty Warrior games.

Is it worth playing or am I better off just picking up one of the other versions? Actually looking back I think the last one I played was three on the PS2.

I think DW6 is better than DW6 Empires but I just don't like the Empires aspect basically. I'd say that and Orochi 2 are the ones to check out, besides obviously Gundam 2.

I don't think I could get into Gundam since I am more fantasy oriented.

I am playing Empires but I miss the simple hack and slash. I have now been keeping my eyes open for cheap copies at the local stores of the various titles but no luck there. They don't even have used copies of any of the titles, though I prefer to buy new.

Some things do annoy me still which I remembered about the previous games. I hate the mapping system. I keep failing assignments just trying to figure out how to get from point A to Point B especially when I only have 2 minutes or so. I think I just need a bigger TV since I can barely make out the details on the minimap.
I'd recommend either Dynasty Warriors 3 and 5, Warriors Orochi 1 or 2, or Samurai Warriors 2
I haven't played Warrior Orochi, but I would definitely agree with DW3 and 5 and SW 2 being high points in each series. I don't remember which it was off hand, but I got either DW 3 or 5 from the (original) fabled, legendary, mythical $5 CC Summer Sale of yore.

My favorites are definitely Samurai Warriors 2 and Warriors Orochi 2. SW 2 was better IMO though, had some not so bad movies in it and a fun and actually challenging survival mode in it. Here's one of the small clips in it, best one I could find but the quality is kinda eh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlaEtc6vh9o

ive seen these game brand new
Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 for 34.99
Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires for 24.99
and PSP Warriors Orochi 2 for 24.99

I am pretty sure I saw Warriors Orochi 2 for $19.99 at Best Buy yesterday, might have been YMMV price but didn't look like it.

Warriors Orochi 2 was the newest one I've played. Pretty fun, and getting the final weapons on that game was so easy compared to the DW series which is partly a bad thing since it gets repetitive, even more repetitive than the other DW games.

Just got DW6 Empires for clearance at Target and must say DW5 Empires seemed to be better, but the graphics have been slightly improved and create a character is better. Whats annoying is you can't simple walk into the enemy main camp for a quick victory (annoying for me anyways considering how many maps you can go through) and It's harder to capture enemies.

Overall I still generally prefer DW or SW Empires over the normal games.

I looked tonight, but the one I stopped in didn't carry it. I couldn't find a blue shirt to check the computer. I know searching online on BB it only pulls up the PSP version.

I was really surprised also since it looks like BB really cut back on what they carry. The store used to have 2 aisles and now was down to one. On top of it they had 20 or so of each main title/new release and not a single classic title. They maybe carried 40 titles at most.

Dynasty Warrior 5 or samurai warriors 2. I didn't care for 6 much or the first gundam game. Haven't played the second. I wish they would just add online coop play to 5 and rerelease it for 360. :(

Well I found a copy of Warriors Orochi 2 at BB for 19.99 so I may break that open tomorrow. No luck still on Samurai Warriors 2. They did have SW2 Empires for 19.99 though but was hesitant after DW6:Empires.

I need to go back and play 99 nights again to see if it is as bad as I remember if I can find a cheap copy. I know I tried it early on and didn't care for it. I just don't remember why.

99 Nights wasn't terrible, but they could have done a much better job with it. I would suggest picking up Warriors Orochi 2, it is a great game and both of the Samurai Warriors were good IMO. Empires has basically played the same from the ones I played, but I didn't play DW6: Empires yet since I didn't care for DW6 as much.

Yeah I don't remember why I didn't care for it. Maybe I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be since it may have been one of those titles I was debating on getting the system for since I had always been a DW fan and it was pretty hyped before release. I may try and pick up a copy here if I can find one around $10 or so.

I just didn't care for the strategy in empires since I just want to run around and kill things like the old days. Also since it has been a while I don't remember any of the characters and when you pick your person it is by name so you don't know the weapon or anything at least as far as I found in my little time playing.

You probably wouldn't care for SW2 Empires either then, so I would hold off on it. As for 99 Nights I wasn't all that impressed with it either or at least not as much as I thought I would be, so I would wait to get it cheap again if I were you.

Well I scored a SW2 new on ebay for $13 shipped so I will just return SW: Empires. I also found a copy of Warriors Orochi new shipped for $24 so I picked that one up also. I figure this gives me something to play. Still have a couple of offers out there on Ninety-Nine Nights.

I wish someone would do another fantasy version.
