What's the point of Surround Sound setting for PSP games?

First things first, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is INCREDIBLE! I'm literally playing this game from full battery charge to empty over and over again.

Anyway, while playing I noticed that the game offers a surround sound setting. I believe a few other PSP games also offer this; Gitaroo Man comes to mind. What's the point of this setting and how is it different from stereo? Is this setting used for the new PSPs when you hook them up to the TV? I was wondering if this would enhance the sound quality if I hooked up my PSP to my AV receiver via the component cables. Thanks!

If I recall correctly, it was an audio option in the original. I think it was originally called "Wide" though. Probably a hardcoded audio feature that they felt should just remain untouched during the porting process.

There are surround sound headphones, and you could probably get a headphone to audio out adapter that would let you hook it up to a stereo.

I'm pretty sure it's just to to enable simulated surround sound. The DS has this option on all of its games as well, and from what I noticed it sounds better than the normal Stereo or Headphone option.
