Why does the PSP discharge so fast when off?

Wolfpup

CAGiversary!
This has always slightly bugged me about the PSP. If you turn it off and leave it for a couple of weeks (as I do if I'm currently going through a DS/GBA game), it's completely dead when you come back.

That's hard on lithium batteries, so I've recently tried just leaving it plugged in-and noticed the charge light comes on from time to time just during the day.

I know it's powering the clock, but geez, so does the DS, and it goes weeks while maintaining a full charge.

Not a big deal, but it is weird. Anyone else notice this before or slightly bugged by it?

I have also noticed this and was not just bugged, I was pissed.

I hadn't played it in awhile and had just bought a new game for my 3+ hour drive home from college and I put the game in and the damn thing didn't turn on. It sucked sitting there with nothing to do for 3 hours or so. God damn, just thinking about it now gets me heated.

ive had the same experience.

i use rechargable batteries now rather than the charger, and then just carry the extra (fully charged) battery with me whenever im out.

My PSP is in sleep mode pretty much whenever I'm not playing it, and has only died once or twice, after leaving it for more than a month in sleep mode without playing it.
...? I've never had this happen, even with it in sleep mode for two weeks straight.
When did you buy it? Maybe they changed something from the original systems (ie I've got a launch unit).

I shut mine down totally, and it's still drained dry within a few weeks (not exactly sure how long, but I'd say within 1-3 weeks, somewhere in there).

One theory I just made up is that to run the clock Sony actually keeps the main CPU running at like 1Mhz or whatever, and that it still drains more than the DS, which might have some specific "clock chip" or something.

I've got a launch unit too and the shit gets drained like you wouldn't believe.

My PSP had a full charge about two months ago, I never touched it, got a new game and BAM, it's dead.

Huh, they must have revised something. Hopefully someone's that doesn't drain will let us know if they have a newer unit.

mine's a launch unit.

I've gone three months on one occasion without turning my launch PSP on for anything at all but it still had most of its charge.

I suspect people don't know when they've put it in standby. I've done that a couple of times. Even then, I only needed to get it connected to a USB port (using a charger/data cable) quickly to avoid a complete power loss.

I have a launch system as well and don't have this problem. I played for a few days and left the system in sleep mode (accidently) when the battery showed two bars left. I came back a week or so later and it was still at two bars.

i got mine on april 2006 and the battery drains. i havent played it in 3 weeks . go to pop in a game and the system is dead. I even had to reset all the info cause the clock and the date was wrong

This has happened to me too. Its weird because you would think the PSP would discharge faster in sleep mode vs. being completely off.

Yeh I know, why aren't you guys confirming your not putting it in stand by on accident?

I've even made sure that I turned the PSP completely off by holding the power switch up for a good 10 seconds. Sometimes when I'm not sure I will turn my PSP back on to see if I accidentally put it in stand by. I am pretty sure that there is some sort of blinking sequence that the power light uses to tell you if you have turned the PSP off or put it in stand by mode.

If I remember correctly:

Stand By= Series of 5 quick green light blinks
Full Shut down = 2 slow green light blinks

did they ever release a better battery for the psp.. this is really what is still stopping me from playing it more..

do the new units come with a better battery?

also how do you charge via usb.. i hate the fact that it simply doesnt charge when hooked up via a regular usb cable

I *THINK* so. Like 90% sure. I press and hold the switch up for a number of seconds until everything appears to be completely off.

Mine's never lit up when it's in sleep (like the light doesn't blink or anything), so they do look the same.

I sometimes turn it back on too for the same reason :D

They released a larger battery over a year ago I think. I think it comes with an 1800Mah, and the replacement for around $40 is 3400. That's actually a steel compared to cell phone battery prices...

Most things won't charge by USB, as it doesn't provide much power, would need a whole separate charging system, etc.

The default battery life is pretty good though. I've never drained it dry in almost two years of owning it. CNET actually says it's battery life is better than the DS Lite's, and I've never drained that either. (Of course Lithium batteries age even if you don't use them, so I'd imagine some people's original batteries are getting pretty dead by now.)

hell no the battery aint better than a ds.. i used to get 10 hours out of that thing...

it always feels like my psp is low on battery...

so that 1800 one is common now... im guessing that 3400 is those bulky ones?

the 3600 mAh are the big Datel X2 or third party external ones that attach to the back.

theres a 2600 mAh MEGA Lithium by another third party. these are regular size.

then theres the official 2200 mAh Sony "Stamina" battery. these are the regular size ones found in stores for $39.99 (i think these might be the ones you were thinkin bout).

I wonder, if you know your not going to use the system for a while, what if you took the battery out. Maybe that will help it keep its charge.

ok so there are official 2200.. those are the ones i was prob thinking of getting.. need a deal..

unless those 3rd party ones are good and regular size

i dont even see the stamina pack for sale.. or atleast its not on buy.com or ebgames

on ebay everything seems to be coming from hong kong

Hmm, maybe it was 2200Mah I was thinking about?

One interesting thing I noticed when I recently pulled my battery out was that if felt like half the nomral 1800mah battery was empty. I figured that's how they could release one close to double the size in the same form factor. I'll have to double check if I got to the store today.

I think it's suppose to blink only when going into standby. Here's what I've noticed though when I first originally got it I swear everytime I turned it off it would blink a couple of times and the battery would die within a few days (it wasn't in standby, sometimes I would turn it on to check).

But recently I noticed that it stopped blinking when I go turn it off. I'll have to see how long the charge holds.
damn $40 .... thats steep

do the new psp comes with this one?
I got my psp about two or three weeks ago and it comes with the 1800 battery. And if you do buy a spare battery you'll probably want a external charger also and that's like another 40 dollars.
