Why is Megaman called Rockman?

Scrubking

CAGiversary!
He is a robot and has nothing to do with rocks unless you defeat gutman. He has nothing to do with rock n roll either so why rockman? What does "rock" mean in japanese?
Rock as in the type of music.

Rock
Roll (his sister)
Bass (Megaman and Bass)
Forte
Beat (the bird)
That's wierd seeing how there is nothing that is music themed in the games. You would think that this was a dance game or something.

Yeah, i never really got it either. Megaman seems to roll off of the tounge better anyway.

Although, its interesting to note that the Megaman series has some of the best music ever to be in videogames. If you search around you can find more techno remixes to Megaman songs than you can shake a stick at.

Yeah, most of the MM names are all music oriented...

Also, it's probably just following the same naming conventions as DBZ, pick some random group of things, like food, and name all your characters after it...

Well, it appears most of the 'good guy' characters have musical names. As for the why, it's Japanese. It's not supposed to make sense.
Most of the names? That list is like 2% of the names. Looks like a big coincidence to me.
It's all the main characters/bosses except for the Drs. and grab-bag of Robot Masters...

As a loooooooooong time fan and player of megaman games, i have never noticed this before. It's interesting insofar as... well... it's just kinda interesting.
Aren't many of the Dragon Ball characters' names based on vegetables? I think Japanese are just quirky that way.
Trunks and Bulma are names referring to underwear. ;) Those are the two I can remember.

On-topic: Rockman is based on music, as are those other characters mentioned. The Japanese characters had these names becuase when they see rock, they think of the music, where we tend to think of a stone. The creators believed the music was catchy, hence, give the characters musical names. I guess nobody watched the commentary on Megaman Anniversary Collection... ;)
Or nobody bothered to unlock it. Them old games is teh hard!
The latest opm has a save with everything unlocked. I wouldn't have bothered without it.

Anyway, what is this commentary under so I can watch it?

I don't need no instruction manual to know how to ROCK!

The 2's had the best music in the series -- Megaman 2, and Megaman X2. Did the commentary say anything about the number 2?

They're last name is Briefs and there's also Bra(Bulla in the US version).

Check out this site for all of the weird translations of the many names in DBZ.
it's better than technoman and classicalman.
Emoman would've been kind of depressing.
::rimshot::

Originally it was supposed to be a take off of Janken or Rock Paper Scissors. Rockman shot rock pellets and the the dudewith the scissors on his head so on and so forth.....
...because he's rock hard!
Probably from looking at your sig.

"That man seems to have suffered a rather serious snakebite" - Stewie Griffin

Quote has nothing to do with the topic. I just like it...

On the DBZ tip their names came from a lot of foods (Toriyama must have been hungry a lot) and random inanimate objects:

Bulma (japanese name pronounced Baruma) is closer to the japanese pronounciation of "Bloomer" or women's undershorts.

Trunks (as said is self explanitory)

Gohan - Rice

Chi-Chi - Milk (breastmilk?)

Oolong - Tea (A pig named after a type of tea.. strange)

Pan - Bread

Piccolo - Pickle

Krillin (japanese spelling Kuririn, Kuri = Chestnut... or possibly just Curry)

Lets see what else

Raditz - Radish

Vegeta - Vegtable

Garlic jr (obvious)

Kula/Frieza - Cooler/Freezer

I'll stop there, partially because thats all I remember, But yeah the Megaman, Rock man debate rolls on... on and c'mon how come no one's mentioned

Megaman's dog RUSH

Oh wait, eew.

Next let's all talk about the hard rocking names of the Guilty gear games like Axl, Zappa, Jam, Testement and Slayer!
The better question would be why is Rockman called Megaman? hmmm....
Exactly. But wasn't it changed in the U.S just cause mega sounds cooler? o_O just translational purposes...

And for DBZ I remember when I found out when all the character name and all the stuff in the show is vegetable related, it definately changed my views a bit x.x.
