Why is Megaman called Rockman?

He is a robot and has nothing to do with rocks unless you defeat gutman. He has nothing to do with rock n roll either so why rockman? What does "rock" mean in japanese?

That's wierd seeing how there is nothing that is music themed in the games. You would think that this was a dance game or something.

Yeah, i never really got it either. Megaman seems to roll off of the tounge better anyway.

Although, its interesting to note that the Megaman series has some of the best music ever to be in videogames. If you search around you can find more techno remixes to Megaman songs than you can shake a stick at.

Well, it appears most of the 'good guy' characters have musical names. As for the why, it's Japanese. It's not supposed to make sense.

As a loooooooooong time fan and player of megaman games, i have never noticed this before. It's interesting insofar as... well... it's just kinda interesting.

Trunks and Bulma are names referring to underwear. ;) Those are the two I can remember.

On-topic: Rockman is based on music, as are those other characters mentioned. The Japanese characters had these names becuase when they see rock, they think of the music, where we tend to think of a stone. The creators believed the music was catchy, hence, give the characters musical names. I guess nobody watched the commentary on Megaman Anniversary Collection... ;)

The 2's had the best music in the series -- Megaman 2, and Megaman X2. Did the commentary say anything about the number 2?

They're last name is Briefs and there's also Bra(Bulla in the US version).

Originally it was supposed to be a take off of Janken or Rock Paper Scissors. Rockman shot rock pellets and the the dudewith the scissors on his head so on and so forth.....

On the DBZ tip their names came from a lot of foods (Toriyama must have been hungry a lot) and random inanimate objects:

Bulma (japanese name pronounced Baruma) is closer to the japanese pronounciation of "Bloomer" or women's undershorts.

Trunks (as said is self explanitory)

Gohan - Rice

Chi-Chi - Milk (breastmilk?)

Oolong - Tea (A pig named after a type of tea.. strange)

Pan - Bread

Piccolo - Pickle

Krillin (japanese spelling Kuririn, Kuri = Chestnut... or possibly just Curry)

Lets see what else

Raditz - Radish

Vegeta - Vegtable

Garlic jr (obvious)

Kula/Frieza - Cooler/Freezer

I'll stop there, partially because thats all I remember, But yeah the Megaman, Rock man debate rolls on... on and c'mon how come no one's mentioned

Exactly. But wasn't it changed in the U.S just cause mega sounds cooler? o_O just translational purposes...

And for DBZ I remember when I found out when all the character name and all the stuff in the show is vegetable related, it definately changed my views a bit x.x.
