Wii disk drive noise *Update 10-14, Problem resolved. Thanks for the replies!

*Update 10-14 - I decided to return my system. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

I purchased a Wii last week. After several days of play I noticed a distracting noise coming from the disk drive when a disk is inserted. (When no disk is inserted, the system remains quiet.) It wasn't the fact that it was alarmingly loud, it was the actual sound. It had a 'clicking' or 'whiring' noise that would cycle from lower pitch to higher pitch and back again over and over as long as a disk was inserted in the system, regardless of whether the game was being played.

I was wondering if other Wii owners could tell me if that was normal Wii noise or if there was something wrong with my system? I'm curious to know if all Wii systems have that fluctuating 'whiring' noise. It's more distracting to me than my 360 was simply because of the pitch of the noise....if that makes sense? The 360 has one steady noise. You just get used to it after awhile, but hearing a fluctuating noise, constantly yanks me out of the game.

Thanks for any help.

(I made a new topic because no one was looking in the Wii help thread.)

I get a noise when I first put it in but then it's fine.

If it's constant then definitely call support.

Do you have it vertically or horizontally?

I had mine vertically but suffered the same problems you're describing even to the point of getting disc errors all the time. I placed it horizontally and now I don't have any problems.

This is my third Wii by the way after getting replacements so I don't want to go through the process again.

*knocks on wood* Mine is set vertically and it hasn't made any bad recurring whir or clicking disc noises after the initial load.

Keeping it flat makes the system too warm IMO, and I'd rather not heat it up.

My Wii has the same clicking sound whenever the disk is loading (I first noticed it in Metroid 3, when loading at doors). I haven't had any disc errors... yet.

It does kind of concern me that there might be a problem, although I'll be interested to hear if your's (or anyone else's) clicking has escalated into a larger problem. I may contact Nintendo if this keeps up just to see what they say.

Mine recently started sounding like a weedwacker when a disc is in... but whatever the noise, it's probably not normal.

I just sent mine in, you may want to look to do the same.

i hear the clicking sound when i started playing metroid prime 3. well i never try playing other games yet. sometimes i hear it clicking when the system is off. when i said off its with the red light which is standby i guess.

i started hearing it with metroid prime 3 as well. wonder if the update messed something up that installs when you insert MP3.

Mine's been doing this for a while as well. It'll click, whir, beep, and then finally give me a dirty disc error. Its happened on multiple games including Metroid 3 (fresh out of the package). I keep meaning to call customer support but I just don't have the time.

i just swapped my wii (random missing pixel problems on the screen) for a brand new one today, customer service was excellent, however i just popped in metroid prime 3, it updated, and now it won't read the disc, giving me a disc error, i tried wii sports as well, no luck at all, it won't load it properly and i keep hearing the click+whirring noise, going to bring my wii back to nintendo tomorrow and figure things out, i was looking forward to metroid prime 3 =(

I figured I was just imagining it, but I also thought I was getting a lot more noise coming from the drive while playing Metroid 3. Maybe something did happen in that update.

Mine's a bit noiser with Metroid Prime 3, but I think it's just because it loads more often, so the disc is starting and stopping more.

Well, I guess I should say it makes noise more often, I don't think that noise is any different than it was for the disc starting and stopping in other games--just more frequent.

And it seems to coincide with long loads--you know, when you shoot a door and it takes 10 seconds or more to open.

Absolutely right. I actually haven't tried to play any other games since I got Metroid. I need to see if I notice it with other discs.

Random throwing this out there because of the topic... has anyone on here played Scarface? That disc sounded, literally, like it was beating my Wii to death. I mean, horrible noises constantly, but it seemed to all be in the interest of loading. It was bizarre, but seemed like, from others I spoke to, just how the game is.

I really can't help but wonder if that's what 'broke' my Wii, though.

I think dmaul nailed it. It is just frequent loading on Metroid Prime 3. What most of you are probably hearing is the Wii reading the DVD. I've noticed the increase in loading noise in MP3 and even certain parts of Strikers compared to games like Wii Sports or Trauma Center where things are relatively static.

It also makes sense that Scarface would have more loading noise since it is most likely streaming in a ton of data - the city environments, music, cars, pedestrians, etc. Some GC games were incredibly noisy when it came to loading.

Now high-pitched noises and whirring sounds don't sound normal.

Mine too. Also, I hate having Wii Connect 24/7 on when I shut down the wii. I get a swirl of green color on the tv when I turn the wii back on. It gives me a weird feeling that something will break if I leave it on.
Mine seems to click for no apparent reason, like when I bring up the home menu.
Well, I decided to just return it in store, instead of sending it to Nintendo. I guess I'll just wait until they are plentiful in stores and production problems are few and far between before I pick up another. I really wasn't sure if Nintendo would have replaced the system or made some intrusive fix on my system just because it made an annoying noise. I haven't been discouraged, though! The Wii is a really fun system to own.

My disk clicks when I turn the system on and there is a game inside (I haven't played MP3 yet), but stops once it gets to the main page.

Yeah, I think that has been described as 'normal'. My system had a constant whirring/clicking that changed pitch the entire time a disk was inserted.

I wouldn't classify a return as "resolved". Your problem is resolved. The Wii still clicking is still an issue, just now the store's issue. Or maybe I'm just being picky. :)

That's normal, it's quickly reading the disc to see what's in so it can display the image in the Wii Disc Channel.

I noticed this in Metroid 3 as well! I actually had a problem with flickng the nunchuk to grapple, it was very frustrating but I updated the system and so far so good.

my wii makes a sound when i load a CD, exit a game, or exit the internet channel. i think those are normal and haven't had any problems playing any games thus far.

Heh, well actually this thread belongs to me. It was for my benefit. There is a 'repair' thread for the Wii, but nobody was answering my posts. I was forced to create a new thread. This one. To 'resolve' my issue. My issue has been 'resolved'. If you would like to continue discussing 'clicking' noises made by the Wii, I would suggest posting in the proper 'repair' thread.

In other words: You're just being picky. ;)
