Wii Tennis: Surprisingly Good

Blaine

CAGiversary!
In the past half-hour I've developed a real affection for Wii Tennis.

Alright. I've heard a lot of people not like Wii Tennis. Which is cool. But... I think maybe it's just one of those games that grows on you. If you've tried it but didn't care for it, try this out:

First, just take smooth strokes. if you're switching from forehand to backhand, go slow and it won't register as a swing.

Once you can consistently hit the ball... turn your hand over as you swing. Start with the Wiimote face down and as you swing, rotate it up. You can do it vice versa and you'll put sick, sick spin on the ball.

To the point where it hits the ground and shoots off in a different direction.

Now, it's not a perfect science, I'm only at about 80% of the shot I want coming out but it's probably something I'm doing wrong.

And the funny thing is, it becomes easier to put spin on the ball if you use a whole arm swing (I used to just flick my wrist).

It's not there yet, but it's very slowly creeping up into "Virtual Tennis" fun for me. Which is a tall ass order.

Do me a favor and try it, if you still don't like it, no big deal. But just by working the english in, the game has really opened up for me.

granted I have only played it for maybe 10 minutes in a store (limiting my ability to swing due to the crowd and the tether onto the display) but this might be the most fun I've had with a video game in years.

The baseball is kind of weak though, but it does register my pitches in the upper 90's...

Yeah, I was going into Wii Sports expecting bowling to be the most fun (according to most reviewers of the game), but I found that I liked tennis right from the start after going through all the games. Also, I tried getting my wife in on some Monkey Ball but it failed miserably. Wii Sports tennis was the first game that reeled her in to being interested in the Wii.

For me, Tennis is the best out of all of the Wii Sports. I loved playing Virtua Tennis for...Dreamcast I believed. Now you get to act like your swinging the racket. If somebody developes a full fledged Tennis game, I'm sold!

Tennis is definately the best. Maybe that's why they put it as the first sport on the menu? I can only imagine how awesome a Top Spin or Mario Tennis game would be.

Tennis Protip: When your opponent hits the ball, both of your guys know where the ball is going to be, even with heavy spin. They put their racket on the side its going to pass them at. I noticed it when the ball was going to my right, but the guy was holding his racket on the left side, and the ball ended up spinning in that direction on the first bounce. So the instant the opponent hits the ball, prepare to hit on whichever side your guys are holding their racket, regardless of what you might think.

Tennis is definitely a lot of fun. I need to work out my swing so It doesn't go out of bounds all the time...It's a ton of fun though. Can't wait for Mario Tennis!

Yeah Wii Sports Tennis is a lot more deep than I initially thought. At first I thought it was like one of those pingpong hook-to-TV games, but it does register a whole lot of detailed movements. Very happy with Wii Tennis.
