Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I don't know how much of the holidays accounted for sales this time around but every time I went to the store I always saw someone buying one.
Looks like it did better than the xbox one globally, last week.

Where did you get that chart from, VGCHARTZ? I actually wouldn't be surprised if it's selling better than the Xbox One because Wii U has been really cheap and, at least anecdotally, the Xbox One isn't selling at stores near me. The Wii U actually seems to have done reasonably well this holiday though I doubt it's anywhere near the 9 million install base they said they had to have.

Got it from VGChartz.

An employee at my Target told me that the week before Christmas they got more returned XB1 units then what they had sold that week. I would guess from resellers?
lol... It's the Wii U all over again. Even though they used cheap labor to make these systems I have to give it to them to try and keep the surplus running over the holidays, even if it upset some resellers.

I know they're not known to be accurate, but I've seen Xbox Ones in stores pre- and post- Christmas.
I have as well. I've only seen one PS4 in the wild and it was on hold at customer service. The Wii U case has frequently been empty as has the 3DS case. 2DS does not seem to be moving as well.

This is what I've experienced as well. The 3DS and PS4 areselling everything. The Wii U started selling really well after stores lowered all the SKU's to $250 (the original price that made the Wii popular). Most people don't consider a Nintendo to be a $300 or $350 console since it's largely a secondary machine. If the price moves back to $300 after the holidays then I'd expect sales to dry up again.

The Xbox One and 2DS are not selling here either. MS is probably going to release a SKU without Kinect next year and lower the price.

I have seen few PS4s, a few Ones, a handful of Wiis, and various DS models. Though I seem to cone into stores right when they refresh their stock, as several times I came in and all the systems were full.

Wii u is out of stock at a lot of the popular stores here, the cost is about half of the Xbox one so I can see why especially since it's been on sale so much. Xbox one seems to be everywhere now and not selling. There are no sales or promos for the Xbox one. The 3DS XL had so many sales I can't see anyone looking at any of the other DS models, they will go right for the one on sale, same with the Wii U. My theory is people will buy what is on sale, at least here. Unlike the Xbone the Wii U has a substantial amount of quality titles on the shelf with more good ones on the way, most of the games are out of stock as well at the stores that are out of Wii U systems. Nintendo needs to do a better job of stocking the games around the holidays, if they could keep them stocked then they would sell a lot more. My target has been out of stock on wind waker and Mario 3d for a couple weeks now. There have been little sales for the 2DS except that it was $99 at Walmart.com for a few hours one day.

If they were running a 2DS sale during Target's 10% apology weekend I probably would've ended up with one. That's when I really saw the 3DS stock clear out.

Yeah, they definitely need to bring the price down to $250 permanently. That's the price people seem willing to pay. It's certainly the price I was willing to pay.

At my local Target last night there were no PS4's, 2 Xbox One's, and 3 Wii U Deluxe's (no bundles). They also had about 10-20 3DS's and 2DS's, most were just the plain systems, I only saw one or two systems bundled with games.

Possibly people who couldn't connect it to the Internet for whatever reason.
^ No these were unopened XB1 consoles. I would guess resellers or buyer's remorse. However I can't see how you could truly be remorseful about any of the systems. They are all great in their own way depending on what you plan on using it for. It just helps to be educated on what the system does well.

I definitely agree with you on this. A couple of sales, tossing in a few games, and it seemed to seal the deal for quite a few people. I even talked a few friends into it and I'm in shock because they are getting more regular use out of it than their shiny new Day One Xboxes they bought.

I see a decent amount of Xbox Ones and PS4s sporadically in stock around me. The Wii U is hanging around too, but definitely less stock than there was prior to all of the sales in November and beyond.

The 3DS XL and it's counterparts seem to be selling like gangbusters. I would be tempted to pick up a 2DS if I could nab one on sale around $80-$90.

I'd bet resellers. The recent ebay auctions ended at pricess less than console+tax for the most part, so the sellers have to eat the fees.

Also, I've found 3DS XLs in every store, but they also had a ton more stock to begin with. Each Target, for example, had 30-40 to start with, and that's just on display.

I am certain Nintendo will be clearing a lot of its Wii U stock with the holiday day and all but what they need is consistency. I hope sales continue with the top shelf 1st party titles that will be released early this year.

There's nothing I'm interested in on Xbone or PS4, so I'd be remorseful. :/ If PS4 had full backward compatibility with PS3, on the other hand, I could see finding it rather exciting despite not being very interested in any currently released games.

So...I want Wii U Fit and my trial period is about to expire.  If I buy a Wii U Fit Meter, synch it with my console, then resell it....the software works forever right?

I wonder if it's wiser to pay the extra $30 for the disc and save space on my Wii U?

My Wii U was used off of eBay and I had no problems.

After what happens to the PS3 when it launched, I doubt Sony will ever do backwards compatibility again.

I don't generally advocate for digital games but I would highly recommend the digital for Wii Fit U since you need to synch with the fit meter, and putting in a disc would be really cumbersome when synching every day. This way you just boot up the console and start the game and you can synch right away. If any game is to be bought digital it is this. Besides the fit meter is only $20 if you already have the balance board. Gamestop sells the balance boards cheap if you can't find one elsewhere.

Probably.

Though I doubt Nintendo's next system will be backwards compatible with Wii/Wii U games as well.

Can I leave the gamepad in the cradle whenever it's not in use or is it better to charge it only when the battery is low?
We've had outs sitting on the cradle since day one (launch day) and despite nearly daily use from my son (mostly in Miiverse) it seems to be holding its charge the same as always.

Yeah, like Animal Crossing for the 3DS this seems like a good choice for digital. I have a store pickup order in place for the meter for $9.99 from Fry's. I need to get in there tomorrow to pick it up before they cancel it. I still have time to download and sync to get the game for free, right? It would be nice to get some use out of that balance board. I bought it at the release of Wii Fit and used it for about 2 days .

Edit: Crap, I already might be too late at Fry's. My order says pick up by 12/31/13 or the price is subject to change. It is still $9.99 online but could change by Friday when I can get in there. Maybe I can put another order in. OK, put a second order in, in case they change the price before Friday ;).

do preowned wii u's at gamestop work really good or dont buy used?
I hate Gamestop in general, particularly their used market, which saps the money from the industry, preys upon buyers and screws those who trade in, so my comments will be biased in that regard; however, it seems to me like buying used from them would be a bad idea. I would consider a refurbished system from Nintendo or Amazon or someone, but at the same time, why not just get a good deal on some brand new hardware instead? I'm all about recycling, but...

Eh, I bought used systems from GS before with no issue, I just got a refurb Vita since they had it on sale for 130 and it works great.

I'm thinking about getting the Fit Meter and giving Wii Fit U a try. I didn't stick with Wii Fit that long, but it's winter and I certainly need an exercise routine. When does the promo end, for buying a the meter and getting Wii Fit U free?

With as many stories we've all read just on CAG about how an user is experiencing hardware issue and being advised to "does it boot up for 5 minutes? if so, trade it in to GS", I would not buy used unless it is factory refurbished.... not gs refurb or anything.

Plus, with how long I expect to keep my hardware, just not worth it to buy used. Yes,  many will be fine and we've all heard the "OMG, I bought a used Vita and it has a 32GB card in it!" stories, supporting the manufacturer with a +1 sale (out of millions!...) and buying new give me a little peace of mind. I have enough to worry my mind in RL I don't want to worry about some preteen's bodily fluid on/in  some used crap.

For me it really depends on WHERE you are buying used. If you are buying used from GS, then you can probably get a better deal elsewhere by paying a few bucks more for a better quality product. GS's used products are usually thrift store quality, aka the worst of the worst. Also stay away from the flea market for used systems, those are usually really bad as well. If you are buying from another family or person on CL, ebay or a yard sale you have a much better chance of getting a system that was hardly used. I own many systems from yard sales and I have done well. Just don't pay more than you would pay for a broken system, and if you are paying a lot make sure you test it out when you are buying it.

I probably wouldn't buy a used handheld or a used controller though, unless it looked in almost perfect shape, definitely wouldn't buy a used 3DS.. too much going on there.. especially since the buttons on handheld systems can't be replaced easily and they get abused by children and who knows what else. With a used system just add a new controller and its no problem.

Although I generally agree with comments here about not buying a used console from GS, I did pick up a used, near-mint 3G Vita from there a few months ago for $137.xx, a great deal at that time, and it works perfectly (my second Vita). If you do look carefully at the condition of a handheld, you're probably going to do fine. Home consoles, on the other hand, you have to be a lot more careful.

I have officially joined the Wii U club, just got a brand new Wind Waker HD bundle with Mario 3d World and ZombiU.

So do you need the sensor bar for anything? I haven't hooked it up and I've played a bunch of games and I'm not sure I need it. I really don't want to put it above or below the TV because it would be a huge huge pain in the ass to do properly. Anyone else not using it?

You really only need it if you want to play Wii games or use a Wii remote to navigate the Wii U menu. I do that occasionally - it is convenient when playing the new Wii Sports Bowling for example. There's no need to get the gamepad down at all then.

I don't see myself playing any Wii games so I guess I'll do without it for now. I've got SM3DW, Zelda, SMBU+Luigi, Pikmin 3 and Nintendoland. So far so good.
Some Nintendoland games use Wii Remote Pluses, but every one uses the Gamepad.
We haven't played them all yet but do any require the pointer? The ones we've played just made you hold the wiki remote sideways and worked fine.
