Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I'd go for NSMBU or NSMB Wii. You can play that with them and they can hit the A button to go into a bubble when they're going to fall in a pit etc. and you can rescue them.
You can do the same thing in Mario 3D World as well.

Why'd you get a PS4 and XB1 to not play them? :p I'm not really interested in any of the PS4/XB1 launch games at all, which I feel lucky about (but a little sad). Anyway--I think the Wii U Pro controller looks great, but the whole point of the Wii U is the gamepad. So, why I said I'd only use it four times a year--I meant I'd probably only use it when I was playing with someone else.
I got the PS4 primarily because of PS+. I've already beaten Contrast and Resogun is pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to whatever else they give us. And I also picked up Knack (played it coop with my son last night in fact), NBA 2K14 (have never played an NBA game and I figured this was a good place to start), and Skylanders Swap Force (sorry Nintendo you lose out on these types of games because of lack of achievements/trophies). So I wouldn't say I don't play it - my point was simply that the Wii U (because of Mario 3D World) and PS3 (because I have a huge backlog of RPG games there) are currently getting more play than the next gen systems. The X1 is primarily for my older son - I wouldn't have bought one if it were not for him.

And I got both dirt cheap because of trade-in credit so neither cost me much to get. If I was paying $500 cash for the X1 I probably would have waited till next year no matter how much my son wanted it.

Concerning the Pro controller: I wouldn't say the whole point of the Wii U is the gamepad. Sure, it is a central feature. But for me, another main feature of the Wii U is HD. Super Mario 3D World looks fantastic and I am so glad to be able to play a Mario game on a real controller for the first time since Super Mario Sunshine.

As for phones, ugh, tell me about it. I finally got out from under AT&T and their ridiculous small data allotment and Apple/AT&T's collusion in having the iPhone send out massive amounts of data late at night in order to blow up your data cap (something both companies deny). Unfortunately I'm paying even more now but will get unlimited data for all 4 phones in the family (so I don't have to berate my wife and kids about turning off the data all the time - essentially turning the phones into glorified iPods). But man, the monthly costs are a bit ridiculous - fortunately I got a promo that reduced the unlimited data plan to just a bit more than I paid AT&T for a 200MB limit. Console gaming in comparison is dirt cheap. I could buy a couple X1's and PS4's each year with the monthly phone fees.

Fair enough. I'm hoping to have quite a PS4 stash by the time I get one. :)

You could have sold all your games on half.com and made a lot more money than trading to Gamestop, though! I know it's a lot more work, but Gamestop really rips people off as far as trade-ins.

I suppose that's how "next-gen" always kind of works, though. Most of us will still be playing "last-gen" for quite a while. I have a massive backlog, too, especially on PS3. Kind of nice to be able to play my Wii backlog on my Wii U. If PS4 could play all my PSN stuff, I would have been a lot more tempted, even if it still didn't play my PS3 discs.

One funny thing about phones and gaming--gaming has never really increased (much!) with inflation. If anything, it's cheaper now than ever, more or less. Phones, on the other hand, whoaaaaa. Families are getting extorted. I'm happy with my $45/month unlimited plan, but even that seems really high to me.

Dude, I've been on CAG for nearly 10 years. I know how and when to trade and how and when to sell stuff ;). Gamestop (where I did get my PS4) trade-ins can be quite profitable if you know how to work the system. I do sell when I need to, but I also trade when it works in my favor. I got my X1 from Amazon (using mostly GS credit turned into even more Amazon credit via trades) and I paid nothing out of pocket for either system. Even factoring in the original costs of the games I traded, I paid less than half price for both systems.

As a general rule, I only trade if I can get 3/4 or more of the same value I would selling it. Why 3/4? Sometimes slightly less credit is worth it not to have the hassle of listing/packaging/shipping/customer issues (scammers, returns, idiots who buy the wrong game for the wrong system, etc). But don't get me wrong, I've been selling on eBay since 1998 or so (well before I got back into playing video games) and know how to maximize my value there too.

Hm, well I don't know how to do that. :) I mostly ended up hoarding a ton of games, then laboriously selling them on half.com. I made a good bit of money, though.

I'm still trying to figure out what TVii is, and why it can't change the channels on my TV correctly.  (Seriously, they forgot to program in a decimal when most TV stations now have decimals in them?)

I wish this was a good Wii U and Wii controller.  It's neat looking, and the concept it seems to promise (but doesn't deliver) of functioning as a Wii Classic Controller Pro without Wiimote and also as a full Wii U Classic Controller Pro would be ideal.  Too bad it's apparently total garbage.  Going to be on lightning deal, too.

You know what's baffling to me is why Nintendo can't make a Wii U Controller that works for ALL WII VC GAMES without need of a Wiimote, and also functions as a full Wii U Pro Classic Whatever controller.   Now that would be worth my $50, so I only had to use Wiimotes with games that were actually designed to be played with them.

Or better yet, make the gamepad work with Wii Virtual Console games the way it does with Wii U.

Rant over!

I'm all in now. Just bought Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3 from TRU. So Christmas is going to rule this year:

- WiiU console

- Mario Wii remote +

- New Super Mario Bros. U

- New Super Luigi U

- Nintendoland

- Super Mario 3D World

- Pikmin 3

Any other WiiU exclusives that are kid friendly that I'm missing? I'm thinking maybe Lego City but I don't think the reviews were all that good.
Not exclusive, but Spongebob:plankton's Robotic Revenge and Ducktales!

Not sure who does nintendo marketing in u.s for them but they need to stop these ads that talk about upgrading. They need to put in ads that show off some of the great games on the wii U that recent came out. The main issue with wii u is that the avg person that got wii thinks wii u is just a updated wii. You don't see the other companys with their new system saying anything about upgrade.

Yeah apple makes millions by just putting out a new product that is ever so slightly different from the last and people eat it up. They don't talk about upgrading. They need to have commercials with the Wii fit u, and the sports games with online play, since Wii sports hooked everyone perhaps people would buy it if they knew the games were re-released and with online play.

I could probably buy literately every game I ever had an inkling to play and still spend less than a phone contract..

What irks me is, my family makes comments about "oh jeez, more new consoles," despite the fact that the lifespan of the Wii was, what, like 7 years?  The lifespan of the PS3 and Xbox 360 was about the same, and not only that, but I have no interest in a PS4 or Xbone, and my PS3 is still alive and thriving.

Blows my mind that people think it's stupid that there are new consoles every 5-10 years, yet no one gives even the smallest fart over Apple having a new phone and a new Pad every year.  And an iPhone costs way more than even the most expensive game consoles; if you have a contract, they subsidize it, but you still pay in the long run.

Just a pet peeve of mine.  My brother thinks it's annoying that a Wii U exists, thinks I'm weird for buying one, yet he wants an iPhone.  to each their own!

lets face it the causal people that went crazy for the wii moved on to farmville and other free to play games and phone games which is why they need to focus their ads more on the games then saying oh you need a upgraded wii. As a person that grew up playing nintendo systems as a kid it makes me sad to see this going on it scares me sooner or later nintendo will either become a handheld company only or make handheld systems and be a 3rd party game maker for home systems.

People say oh well nintendo makes enough from hand helds to keep up and take a loss on the wii u which sooner or later will not be the case.

Uh, they do show games in their commercials?

Everyone bitched that Nintendo didn't do a good job to explain the difference between Wii and Wii U and now that they do you are bitching still? lol

explain the diff by saying you can only play new super mario bros on wii u ? if nintendo marketing was better the wii u would not be having issues in selling numbers as it has had since launch. I really do think nintendo is starting to realize they messed up on the name of system and how they marketed it and now they are still making it sound like it's just a upgrade from the wii.

You have the A+ games covered, there's always Game & Wario, Wii U Party, or the Sonic & Mario Olympic games.

So we've traded Blasterman trolling for TimboSlice trolling? Fanfuckingtastic. Also particularly hypocritical of Timbo to be in here trolling considering he's in the Xbox One thread whining about people trolling that.

Edit-Nevermind, I was wrong. It isn't the Xbox One where I saw him whining about people bashing the One, it was the PS4 thread. This guy's all over the place.

What? I'm not gone and it don't troll! I speak the truth and give honest opinion! Just because I own a Wii U now doesn't mean that my opinion on its imminent demise has changed. I believe there is a 50/50 chance the console is discontinued next year. If it makes it through 2014 and sales remain bad and Nintendo keeps losing money on it then a 100% chance it's discontinued in 2015.

Granted it was only one store, but by Saturday night the only shelves at my TRU that were more empty than the WiiU shelves were the XBox One shelves, and the WiiU ones were larger.

I got a Zelda Wii U a week ago or so and we have the following lineup for Xmas:

  Windwaker (obviously)

  Skylanders Swap Force

Nintendoland (I'm going to get a used copy of this - don't have it yet)

Two coming from their Granny:

  Sonic Lost World

  Lego City Undercover

I'd have liked to have gotten SM3DW, but my kids didn't ask for it, and one asked for Sonic. Shrug. I'll pick SM3DW up at a later date. I also have a copy of NSMBU, but not sure if I'm giving that to them or trading it in. I don't want to overload them too much with games. I want them to enjoy the ones they have more. I've tended to overload them with games in the past. The fact that I have it is due to having actually bought a Wii U last Xmas and some games, and then deciding against it and returning the Wii U. I couldn't return the games without a restocking fee, so I sold the games and one sold fine, but the other the person who I sold it to (new) returned it after Xmas because it didn't work on his son's Wii and they were super disappointed. Yes, Wii. So I ended up with a used copy and no money. Sigh.

Yeesh you got screwed.  I think I would have only offered them a partial refund for that.

I'm overloading my fiancee with 3DS games for Christmas.  Might have been a bad move.

I'm not trolling my god. Every time people give a opinion that is nagitive on this website it's trolling. I have a wii u and want it to do well I just hate seeing the ads they have now and how they say oh it's a 300 doller upgrade from wii. The main issue with most casual is they think wii u is just a wii ad on and these ads don't help. Wii u has amazing games out this fall show them off not telling people to buy a "upgrade"

So...any digital games worth downloading aside from Earthbound?
Seems like most of the good stuff is on the Wii VC rather than the Wii U one. Why didn't they just slide the whole thing over to Wii U and continue from there rather than re-releasing everything? Really annoying.

I like Uncharted Waters: New Horizons a lot. Lots of people like Breath of Fire II. I'd like to play it and probably will, but I keep thinking I could play the GBA version instead with it's better translation and less random encounters.

I don't want I buy a hard drive (nor do I need one yet) but I've got a drawer full of USB flash drives. Can those be used?
I'm in the same boat. I think the flashdrives can be used for storage, but they're not good for running anything off of. So you could store stuff on them, then shift it into system memory for use. Not really ideal. I missed out on a good 2TB USB 3.0 external HDD. Sad. I could have used that with my PC and my old USB 2.0 with the Wii U. :(

Kung Fu Rabbit - good platformer

Little Inferno - great adventure/fireplace sim

Mutant Mudds Deluxe - good shooter/platformer

Toki Tori 2 - fantastic puzzle platformer

Wii Sports Club - Good HD upgrade of the original

There's more depending on whether you want multiplatform games:

Bit.Trip Presents... Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien - Awesome rhythm platformer

The Cave - Good adventure platformer

Cloudberry Kingdom - Good randomly generated platformer

Puddle - Good gyroscopic puzzle

Toki Tori - Good puzzle platformer

Trine 2: Director's Cut - Great sidescrolling action/platformer/puzzle game.

Zen Pinball 2 - Great pinball game

I'd also suggest keeping an eye on the Wii U eShop Deals thread to see what's on sale.

I got a question...

I got a Wii U, but had to exchange it due to issues I was having. Due to Nintendo's Network ID and Club Nintendo linking crap, I had to create a new Network ID for the new Wii U and I apparently can't link my Club Nintendo account to the new Network ID... If I can't get Nintendo support to resolve this, what am I losing out from not having this linked? I believe I won't get Club Nintendo points for eShop purchases, right? Is there anything else I need to know or should be concerned about?

Wait, you should be able to register more than one Wii U with your Club Nintendo account.

I have no advice, just sympathy. I would be so annoyed and sad!

Thanks. I kind of researched it and I'm pretty sure I am SOL, but couldn't find a definitive answer as to what I would be losing or missing out on by not being able to link my Club Nintendo account.
To my knowledge, you'll only be missing out on doing the surveys and getting Club Nintendo points. Not the end of the world, I guess. It's just annoying that that's how it is. Nintendo has some really baffling policies.

If that's all it is, then i'm ok with it... Their online stuff needs a lot of work. I don't know why they can't be like everyone else and have it account based and be able to activate that account on multiple consoles.

Nintendo does so much that leaves me utterly confused. The only company I find more inscrutable is Square Enix, but it's pretty much neck and neck. I once in a while attempt to make sense of it all, but it amounts to mere vapour, tickling my nostrils and making me sneeze and fart simultaneously.

Strange that you can't link 2 WiiU's. I have both my 3DSs linked.
I think maybe the issue is that you can only use a single Nintendo Network ID on one Wii U. Is that right? So if you use it on one Wii U and link your Club Nintendo account to it, then you get a different Wii U and have to create a new Nintendo Network ID, it doesn't let you link that second Wii U to the Club Nintendo account because...

oh who knows. Lost my train of thought with my massive theory.

Right, but if you tried to connect both those accounts to one Club Nintendo account, it wouldn't let you do that. (I think.)
Right, you can only have a club nintendo account tied to one NNID. You can have multiple NNIDs linked to a Wii U, but those NNID's cannot be linked to multiple Wii U's.

So I basically need to somehow unlink my Club Nintendo account from my previous NNID so I can link it to my new NNID.

Only method seems to be to put on a mushroom hat and jump on your co-op partner's head over and over in front of the Nintendo Redmond building while shouting "It's-a me! It's-a me!"
