Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

Watching Evo now, a couple announcements from Bamco:
-Dragonball FighterZ beta regestration starts July 26th, 9 playable characters.
-Geese Howard from the Fatal Fury games is the next guest character for Tekken 7

Ok, I need everyone to raise their right hand (it's the one on the right) and repeat after me:

I WILL NOT POST SPOILERS FOR GAME OF THRONES, EVEN IF PEOPLE ON OTHER SITES MIGHT BE DOING IT LATER TONIGHT.

I solemnly swear I will post a running commentary throughout the episode.

LMAO... just realized I never played the campaign on Halo 4.  What the heck.  Finished 5 and got halfway through Reach.  I've got some work to do.

Is it Halo 3 when:

Master Chief and Cortana? end up in different dimensions or something like that?

Not a different dimension, just adrift somewhere unknown in space. And they manage to get found within four years :^)

I raise my hand over my heart and solemnly declare "we the people."

John Snow dies

Is John Snow still alive? Has he survived the mass murdering that RR Martin likes to do?

I've been trying to catalog my backlog via backloggery.com- made progress this weekend in completing "Grow Up.". Game becomes a lot more fun the longer you spend with it. Reminded me of the early 'Spyro the Dragon' games.

At a crossroads for my next saga to work through. Thoughts on-
* Metal Gear Solid V: Definitive Edition
* Red Dead Redemption + Undead Nightmare
* Witcher 3: Complete Edition
* Assassin's Creed III + DLC

My game time is mainly limited to the weekends now, so I'm trying to choose my next story epic wisely

Red Dead Redemption. It's a damn fine game and the DLC is short (I Believe 6-8 hours with some of the side missions), but memorable and well done.

I'll buy MvCI when it hits 40/60 for deluxe. I still haven't finished the first Wolfensteins, so the new one can wait. I don't think anything is day one for me. Even Shadow of War will likely wait for Black Friday and probably $30.

Red Dead and Ass Creed are the shortest, though can still go for a while if you do everything. I'd be prepared for the long hall on Metal Gear and Witcher. Out of your options I'd say Red Dead is the biggest must play, but you've got a while before 2 is out if you're worried about that.

Smash just finished at Evo, a great Grand Final, last year's champion and arguably best player dethroned by a relative newcomer (to high tier Smash 4).

Square Enix showed a (new?) Dissidia trailer and announced a beta. I didn't realize it was PS4 exclusive though, bummer.

One more thing from Evo and I'm done. After the UMvC3 finals they did an exhibition match with Infinite. The leaked roster went from 98% confirmed to 100%. Gamora AND Jedah were shown off.

Overall I'd say the game somehow looks better than what we've seen so far even though it's only been a month since E3. Maybe the brighter stage? I'm pretty sure they tweaked Chun-Li's face after all the complaining too. She went from wonky to resembling Chun-Li.

But this is in part 3, right? How does the order of games go? I really feel like this is a mistake, but I don't have any achievements unlocked for passing any of the chapters. Is there any other way to check my progress besides booting the game up? Really doesn't seem like I skipped this, but I don't remember any of the gameplay I've looked at from the game so far...

So I think my achievement streak is on suicide watch.  I met someone this week and she is pretty awesome. Good news is she likes games also and Portal 2 is her favorite game. I still need those co-op achievements.

That opens up a whole new set of achievements! Just try not to speed run them.

Now THIS I can fap to.

The Evil Within 2 will be XBox X enhanced - 4k textures *AND* HDR

Call me when they provide those upgrades to #1. :bouncy:

Portal 2 is pretty casual-friendly, now if she likes something like DOOM or Nier: Automata, then she's a keeper.

Anyone know if it’s possible to partition an external drive and use a part of it as external storage for the 360 and the rest for regular use?

I found an old Vista laptop I had in my basement that I took the hard drive out of and ordered a case from amazon. I just haven’t decided what I want to do with it.

Man, George R.R. Martin is heartless.

RIP George Romero and Martin Landau

General question to the thread here... how does everyone define "backlog"? Is it literally every single game you own, through purchases, promos (like Dishonored DE being a bonus with Dishonored 2), and GWG/Game Pass?

Or is it just games you own that you actually plan on playing?

I don't consider my backlog to be more than a couple dozen games, but I have 120 games ready to install on my X1 that I have zero interest in ever starting (all GWG).

Ouch, a 23 character roster is pretty weak. Especially when I don't care about a bunch of the Marvel side. Injustice 2 had 28 without the DLC and Tekken 7 has like 37. Hopefully there is at least enough content to make up for it.

Get her to become an achievement whore so you can share the love. Although these days Portal 2 is pretty casual friendly so a lot of girls can say yeah I like games and the worst they played is Portal 2. If she is that type of gamer who put 75 hours into Fallout 4 though, then you got a real keeper.

Also to the backlog question. My backlog is every game I either own or have available to download through GWG/PS+ that I someday want to play. I have like over 800 steam games. A lot of them are shit indies from bundles that I have no interest in playing. So I would classify my backlog of games I want to play.

Hoping to see a lot of this with the X coming – more HDR supported games for my S.
I really hope they have two versions of games for Xbox live downloads. One for regular and one for the Xbox X Enhanced version. I seriously don't want to download a 100 GB game on my HD when I have a regular console.

Great question, typically I total up all my unplayed or less than 30 min played games and consider that my backlog but my realistic backlog is prob less than 50 of ones I actually want to play that I own.

Now that I have 3 kids and so many other things going on, I really don't stress the backlog much though. If I want to play 4 hours of Overwatch or Call of Duty I just do it and am not worried that I'm not finishing some other game.

Everything I've bought (or GWG) is considered backlog including DLC. Resident Evil 4 on the Xbox One? BACKLOG! Lego Marvel Heroes on the 360? BACKLOG! Lego Marvel Heroes on the One? BACKLOG! Uncharted 2-3 on the PS4 despite already beaten them on the PS3? BACKLOG! I'll get to them eventually goddammit! Just you wait! One day...eventually. I'm so tired.

Isn't there like 6 DLC characters already announced for the season pass including Smegma Sigma? See, Capcom has answered your concerns!

On the other side of things, Geese Howard announcement has me super excited to see what characters Namco has in store now since I don't think anyone was predicting that. Basically I'm excited for all the fighting games that aren't from Capcom right now.

I probably broke this order question down in way too many ways, but whatever.

They become adrift at the very end of 3, and the Legendary ending shows them drifting toward a Forerunner planet that was retconned into Requiem for Halo 4. I'm just forever salty because I think they should have been lost in space for decades or centuries rather than 4 years, but 343's intentions with Cortana and the short lifespan of Smart AI meant that wasn't feasible. Halo 4's opening mission is crash landing on Requiem.

Timeline-wise, the order is Wars 1 > Reach > 1 > 2 > ODST(events are concurrent to 2) > 3 > 4 > 5 > Wars 2

Release order is better overall. 1 > 2 > 3 > ODST > Reach > 4 > 5.

ODST and Reach are fairly standalone and could be played whenever. Halo Wars 1 is pretty isolated because it's set way earlier than the others, Halo Wars 2 is a direct sequel and tied to the events of 5, so maybe just save them for last if you intend on playing everything.

If you only want the story of the Master Chief, you could stick with just the numbered stuff in order, but I'd still recommend the other shooters. Reach gives you backstory on Doctor Halsey who is in 4 and 5. ODST gives you backstory on Buck from Halo 5. Though I wouldn't say either is super essential to John's story, they're worth playing.

All in all, how much I'd recommend depends on how invested or interested you are in the story or universe. Personally I was really into Halo all through the Bungie years and the first couple of 343 years, including all the expanded universe books and so on. If you really care about the universe or characters a lot is fleshed out here and you get a better appreciation for a lot of stuff in the games, but it's never really been needed. Ironically, when 343 stated they intended to make the books less essential to getting a full understanding of the characters, they basically made them mandatory to know anything about the Didact from 4 or Blue Team in 5. And now the put out so much expanded stuff it's hard to keep up with it.

You may be able to see some kind of progress tracking through the the archived Halo.Bungie.Net for Halo 3. You used to be able to see something similar on halowaypoint.com for Halo 4, but I don't know if any of that functionality is still around.

I had one chapter achievement glitch for a while in Halo 4 when it first came out, but that was long since patched. You would still have most of the chapter completion achievements even if some glitched though.

From what I understand, only the X will have the ability to download the 4k packs

I'm not sure what direction they'll go with the rest of the guests. I could see the easy route and sticking with another Capcom classic like Morrigan, but I think it'll be another well loved franchise. We have 2 guest villain characters, so on the outside realm of possibility I could see someone from Mortal Kombat, but I'm not sure who would be the best option. This would also round out the developers from the early era of fighters, as Capcom and SNK are already represented, but would violence be an issue?

I think a 3D fighter is the more obvious choice, but the only one that's still semi-alive and has characters with the right personality would be Soul Calibur, which isn't much of a stretch and already half represented by Yoshimitsu. The Virtua Fighter characters have so little personality to them, and I just don't think DOA would be a great fit, though maybe one of the ninjas. A female guest would be nice too.

My thoughts based on most obvious villain or anti-hero with some popularity, or personality "fitting in" with Tekken:
Mortal Kombat - Shao Kahn, Scorpion, Sub Zero (except was just in IJ2), Mileena?. (Not sure if magic would be an issue with Tekken)

Soul Calibur - Nightmare, Seigfreid, Mitsurugi, Ivy (Time period could be an issue here, since characters seem to be canon to Tekken lore.)

Dead or Alive - Ryu Hayabusa, Kasumi, Ayane (villains all suck)

Virtua Fighter - Sarah Bryant, Akira (villains all suck)

Ruling out: more characters from Capcom or SNK - though they have the most obvious great options, Blazblue/Guilty Gear - too crazy

As for the backlog discussion, I consider every game that I currently and honestly intend on playing soon-ish to be part of the backlog. As such my list probably floats around 30-50 games that I'd like to get to within a year, with only like 10 being in my immediate plans and the rest kind of in a few weird categories for a rough timeframe, like horror games around Halloween. Really, it's pretty unmanageable and hard to make real progress. I think it will be another year or two before I'll really have time to dedicate to chipping away a meaningful amount. I'd love to just burn some vacation time to play a lot of stuff with no distractions, but I just haven't had the ability to do so for a while.

Backlog - All the games in my inventory which I have not started or finished.

My definition is basically unplayed, unfinished game in my collection. I need to purge a bit though because I have around 350 games installed and only 30 unplayed ready to install, a lot of the installed games I won't play for ages so I should delete them to free up space and so it loads faster scrolling through my games. Anything I've completed is hidden.

I consider my backlog to be the games I want to play. I have a large amount of big titles I haven't gotten around to or finished yet as well as some indies that sit in the same position. There's a ton of crap from GWG I'll never touch past a quick sample.

I wish you could have a "folder" system on the X1 ready to install list so you could have a "Completed," "In Progress," "Others" (for games I'm not going to play) and probably a folder for games that don't end (multiplayer and the like). I'd keep my backlog in the main folder itself.

Better late than never. Was on a plane yesterday, thus the delay.

7/19 - Destiny 2 BETA

These speedrun challenges in Superhot are frustrating but addictive. Definitely gonna do them all.
The Katana levels were my favorite.

A backlog implies I'm keeping track and intend to play them. I just buy games that look cool or that everyone says is awesome, and I scroll past them to Dark Souls or Xcom.

Oh ya, I had typed up a post about microtransactions that I lost because I was in a roaming area. Games have been stuck at $60 for 20 years. $60 +$50 sp is about what companies need to make on a AAA game, due biggly to rising costs and inflation. I don't want to pay $100+ per game, so if they break that price up so the people who love it can invest more, that helps keep the base game cheap. Especially if it's cosmetic fluff, like Overwatch lootboxes, then I say hunt them whales.

GTA shark cards and Battlefield shortcuts are entering into P2W territory, and Battlefront 2's cards definetly sound like "Pay 2 Get A Chance to Win". My bro is really excited for it tho, and he always feels outclassed in mp simply because he only has a few hours late nights or on the weekend to get a couple games in. He's never done it, but I imagine if he liked the game enough he'd rather throw down an extra $20 on a shortcut than be stuck with starter guns for 90% of his playtime.

This. The list of games I have access to vs the list of games I really want to and plan on playing is much shorter.

I do still have some PS3 games I want to play, I swear I'm going to play Beyond: Two Souls some day.

And Deadly Premonition.

And Ni No Kuni.

Dammit.

I only think cosmetics are acceptable for microtransactions. Maybe XP boosters in games that it doesn't really affect competitive play. Destiny really rides the line for me with the Rep boosters, since faster leveling of those gets you actual gear from the factions.

If there are microtransactions in a game that you have to pay money to play, then updates to the stuff affected by it should be free. Why should I pay for maps when a company is making way more money off of microtransactions then they ever would on sales of DLC? A lot of the big guys understand this, games like GTA, Halo, Gears, and Overwatch are doing it right. It's the big boys who can see they can get away with double dipping that are disgusting, the most obvious being Call of Duty, Destiny, and Battlefield.

F2P games have different standards, though I think more of them should give you some kind of option for a permanent quality of life increase from a decent purchase, rather than just getting more currency or getting some temporary boosters. Pay however much to cut away all bullshit.

I wasn't playing video games for about 10 years. So I've been hunting the greatest hosts and have a decent size backlog.

I created google sheets doc to organize the list. Included info like HLTB time and if physical or digital. Something satisfying about reordering on my iPhone. Though it was a little sad to add up all the hours and use how much I play a week, to calculate I have almost 2 years worth of games :)

I'll see your Beyond: Two Souls, Deadly Premonition, and Ni No Kuni and raise you Journey, all the Uncharteds, all the God of Wars, all the Killzones, Heavy Rain, the Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell trilogies, Okami, all the Resistances (w/ trophies), Shadow of the Colossus, and maybe one day finish Ico

I consider my backlog all the games I own, including the ones I "own". Whoever dies with the most unplayed games wins!
