Nah, I knew that well before I sold my 360. I just use credit on XB1 stuff when I have it and spend real money when I want BC 360 stuff. No biggie to me.

Care to elaborate? Our weather may not be as nice in the midwest, but we also lack hurricanes and by nearly all accounts have some of the nicest people in the US. And sometimes it's nice to actually have four seasons, too.

There was a reboot that was announced under what we later found out were pretty sketch circumstances, the trailer shown back then was made with no connection or knowledge of the development team. Later, this team was dropped and MS have said that it's still in production since, though with a different team, while showing absolutely nothing.

This game is an HD remaster of the original instead, seemingly of the same scope as Voodoo Vince HD.

The only reason I see to make this free is to earn back some goodwill from that whole shitshow and the other cancellations like Scalebound. I guess it could be a microtransaction-fest, but I don't think they would have been talking about it in the same way if that was the case. If not, I'm curious if it's free for a limited time and will be on sale for those late to the party, or permanently free forever.

I listened to a Polygon video on it. They're putting in micro transactions into Phantom Dust and they can balance multiplayer via the cloud. I think they are going a Halo 5 route where the DLC is free because on gun skins and such. If this case the game is free, but if you want to unlock all the abilities, there is a fee, etc.

From what I read on neogaf and reddit you can earn all the skills/cards through single player and they carry over to MP. There will be a free MP starter pack as well. If you go into public matches you have to expect people will own the best cards either through beasting through SP or paying for the MP unlocks. So kinda a pay to win environment depending on your foes so you either gotta pay or beat the SP campaign and get everything you can.

 
That's pretty shitty to go F2P with micro transactions and even worse to announce it as a free "re-release" as if they are truly giving away a full game.

After all the crap with the remake, I too had hoped it was a show of goodwill.

Unless something changed in the last week the game is free.You will not have to pay micro transactions to access any of the single player content, and MP content is free outside of those that wish to pay for MP packs and advance ahead of everyone early.

It's the same exact game that was released on the OG XBox. It's 1080p/30fps. They were not able to make it 60fps as logic was tied to the assets. It would break the game. What remains to be seen is if it will get a 4k boost with Scorpio, but make no mistake it looks and plays like the original game and has all the same content.

Why would you not wait 'till the day of your E3 conference to do this sort of free stealth release though? Would have scored them major points compared to Nintendo or Sony.

Despite waiting for the BC sale and free Phantom Dust, I just wanted to say that I came straight from work, fired up my VCR Xbox One, and just had a lot of fun. I've largely been neglecting this thing even though I have a bunch of games for it. Spelunky, Powerstar Golf, Fallout 4, and Boggle - this is one fantastic machine. Best of all, I haven't once thought about posting or lurking on one of my favorite lewd and lascivious sub-reddits since I got home from work! :D

It says that but the codes for Steam and Xbox have always worked in all regions. Pretty sure the GOG codes are region-free as well but they're new, so I don't know for sure.
The only definitely region-locked codes from that site are the PlayStation codes.

It does sound like maybe they'll add more cards or something in the future, but I'm not going to complain about microtransactions for once since it sounds like the singleplayer hasn't been affected. If they only put out normal paid DLC instead of random packs then that's even better, but it seems like this is one of those times where randomized card packs makes a bit of sense.

I'm probably not going to play it multiplayer anyways, I just can't really get into online card games.

The original Fable was solid, but the franchise as a whole feels like damaged goods to me. Between all the unfulfilled promises and the lackluster Fable 3, I'd say Microsoft would be better coming up with a new IP at this point instead of trying to carry through with the Fable torch.

Add on Journey, Heroes, and Legends to what you said and I'll agree that they have done a lot of damage to the brand.

I don't know, I think Fable could easily still have success with the right team making the right design decisions. Fable never really had a rock solid lore connecting the games aside from the main characters being related so they can really go in any direction, or reboot the story. There are plenty of cool ideas in Fable and without Molyneux dragging them down they could make a decent and unique WRPG. I just don't know what studio they could have do it and that's probably the real limiting factor here. It's not really a no-brainer to build a studio just for Fable like they did for Halo and Gears.

Looking a bit more into Phantom Dust, the only thing that feels off-putting to me are the quotes from the past couple of weeks about it being "priced accordingly" for "everyone to be able to play" from Spencer, along with this quote from a developer.

Sometimes (well, OK, often) we make games to make money, but this re-release isn't focused on that. It's about recognizing something unique and novel, and allowing more people to discover it. PD's play - especially multiplayer - is completely unique and (IMO) very, very fun. It never got a chance to prove that on its original (limited) release, so now more people get to discover it, which is all we want out of it.

This sounds beyond fake to me and I'd have a lot more respect for them if they just said that they were going for a F2P model since it's an online card game. It goes along with the way Halo 5, Gears 4, and Halo Wars 2 have their economies set up. Halo Wars 2 having this model is what really made it obvious to me that they're going for the same idea as mobile or Facebook games, getting the tiny percentage of "whales" that spend way too much and make the game profitable. It's a bit less obvious with big games like the others, but HW2 already has a very small player base only a couple months after launch, which I think was probably entirely expected based on HW1 and the current state of console RTS.

Thanks for the explanation. It's been sooooo long since I played the original and honestly didn't get far into it because I got a 360 shortly afterwards and was, say, sidetracked....by the shiny new toy.
