XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

6/20: Called in, server update going on, told to call the next day.
6/21: Called again, requested shipping label to be emailed
6/21: Received shipping label
6/22-7/2: Tried to get my 360 to red ring, to no avail.
7/3: Said fuck it and gave my 360 to UPS to ship without the RROD.
7/7: UPS ships my 360.
7/10: 360 arrives at service center.
7/13: Acknowledged that they've received it.
7/13: The status changes to device shipped back to customer.
7/15: They actually ship a console back to me.
7/21: Receive my Xbox 360, same one I sent in.

I got scared shitless when I saw it was the same console, same serial number. Luckily it's working pretty well thus far except it can get pretty loud at times. Thanks ITDEFX for this thread, it made the process a whole lot easier.

I sent my 360 out on Monday July 7th.
Wednesday July 16th I call MS and they had recieved my console
Sunday July 20th I get the email that MS got my console....WTF???
Later on Sunday July 20th I get the email saying they have repaired my console...ok
Later on Sunday July 20th I get the email that they had shipped out my console....WTF?

Morale of the story, MS's support website is complete garbage
im on my 3rd 360 now
it keeps getting the E74 error every once in a while but im fine with it.
You should send it back in asap since they sent you a lemon. I have been getting random E74 errors since day one on the 360 I just sent in, it was my 3rd 360 so I didn't bother sending it back to MS when I first got it. Fast forward a year and the GPU finally pooped out not letting me play for more than 20 minutes at a time before the picture goes wonky. It has flashed the 3 red lights once or twice on me in the past so I just told the CS rep that I had multiple problems including RRoD.

MS has it now so I'm crossing my fingers that they fix it without making me pay the $100 for the lemon that they sent me in first place.

YaVelcome! :D

fuck I think the wireless port is starting to fuck up. Getting a number of "RECONNECT CONTROLLER" errors.
I still haven't gotten my shipping label yet :whistle2:(
What's a good box size? Why don't they send out coffins anymore?
Probably to help save them costs on supplies and shipping? That's just my random guess, anyway.

I'll be heading to a store across the street with plenty of boxes tomorrow, so if you still don't know what box may work I'll probably have a better idea come tomorrow morning. Just shoot me a PM and I'll be glad to let you know what I ended up with, if any extra packing material was needed (peanuts, bubble wrap), and if the box needed any modifications. ;)

Add another launch Elite to the RROD junk pile.

Called India via 800MYXBOX and got a very nice CSR.

Hey Kapwanil, I'm interested in packing recommendations also. I'm looking forward to your box size recommendation.

Care to share this with the thread so I can add it to the FAQ?

Well mark me down for my third RROD. Yesterday. Lunch. Good times. Out of the three I've had this one was definitely the work-horse.

Launch Unit: 11/05 - 5/06 (life span: 6 mos.)

Replacement Unit #1: 6/06 - 10/06 (life span: 4 mos.)

Replacement Unit #2: 10/06 - 7/08 (life span: 20 mos.)

Replacement Unit #3: 8/08 - ?

So is everyone still receiving the same system they sent in? i.e. no one is sending a premium and getting an elite, right?

I'm really afraid that once my xbox gets fixed, it's gonna RROD like every other day.. :(

For the people who had multiple RRODs, did they break more AFTER your initial RROD? This is my first one, and I've had my unit since September 20, 2006 :)

DAMN, UPS is taking too long! I shipped out on 7/18 and it STILL hasn't been delivered. Also, why isn't anyone getting a coffin? I got a coffin. Guess I just got lucky.

So quick question for those who have sent pre-HDMI 360's: are the consoles they're send you back newer consoles with HDMI ports or are they just refurbs of older systems. I'm still on my original 360 (not bad, considering it was purchased in March of 2006), but I'm getting weird quirks here and there.

because they're requesting the label to ship to the e-mail
DAMN, UPS is taking too long! I shipped out on 7/18 and it STILL hasn't been delivered.
You have to remember that UPS only moves packages Monday-Friday, during weekends packages don't move when using ground shipping.
Is there any way to send your Xbox in if you dont have a fucking printer to print the labels?
Local library will print stuff for about a quarter a page (or at least local libraries around here do.)
Is there any way to send your Xbox in if you dont have a fucking printer to print the labels?
Ask for a coffin and label?

WTF. I STILL don't have a label in my email. Methinks Apu fucked THAT up too. :bomb:

If it's not here tomorrow, I am calling and DEMANDING speaking with an ENGLISH speaking person. SO annoying.

That filthy hurricane! It's because of that bastard that my 360 was sent to Dallas instead of where it's supposed to go. Says it will take longer because of adverse weather conditions.

It only took 45 minutes after I called to receive my UPS shipping label. It came from [email protected] if you want to check your spam folder but most likely it was from an incompetent CS rep. I had a few incompetent CS reps last time I needed to send my 360 in (as in it took 4 weeks and 5 phone calls to receive a coffin that no one knew why it wasn't getting shipped to me.)

Mesquite, TX where I sent my 360 is a suburb of Dallas so at least it isn't that far off course.

I check my mail constantly (junk included)

THIS is annoying.
Same thing has happened to me, I'm waiting for a label as well.

I couldn't get the first label they sent me cos the link didn't work so I phoned the "special" number in the OP to get another one sent but it hasn't shown up yet :bomb:

If I don't get it today I think I'll ring again and get them to send me a box instead.

EDIT - Just got my Label email and it worked this time, although I notice I have a new Repair Ref number.

Yea, my system was listed as "out for delivery" in Mesquite TX yesterday morning so I was pretty happy with the quick shipping (Sent out of Monday). But I get an email from UPS saying:

ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS / THE MOVEMENT OF THE PACKAGE WILL RESUME AS SOON AS THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ALLOW

Figured something like this had to happen because the whole process had been going much too smoothly. :bomb:

Can you imagine if the hurricane was powerful enough that it would have destroyed the repair center or caused the roof to collapse destroying everyone's 360's. From a legal stand point, MS would NOT be liable because it's an act of Nature beyond their control.

 I'm sure they'd cover it. Free Elites for everyone!

So everybody else has adverse weather conditions on their UPS packages too? Because I thought someone was just out to steal my broken 360. I did a check on the weather in Mesquite and it said it was clear skys. WTF they couldn't deliver a package when it was clear sky?

It's not that simple my friend. Have you actually watched the news feeds from that area? Do you know about the conditions of the streets? Do you know if the area has power back up? UPS is NOT going to risk their drivers lives to get your broken 360 to a repair center that *may* be closed for a few days to check out the damage. I am sure if the repair center is out of commission for awhile, they will divert repairs to another repair location for the time being.

I read on the Xbox forums (I'm not sure how true it is) that the repair center is still in McAllen, Texas/Reynosa, Mexico but it is just shipped to Mesquite, TX (North Texas) and then trucked to Reynosa. It would make sense from the weather warnings many are getting on their UPS tracking since Mesquite, TX is out of the hurricane path but Reynosa was hit hard from the hurricane yesterday and today.

So here's my full timeline:
Tuesday 7/15/08 Got 1 red ring -- called in and said I got 3 red rings. Repair order cannot be placed because MS's server is down
Wednesday 7/16/08 Third call, got repair order placed and label delivered to email.
Wednesday 7/16/08 Dropped off 360 with UPS
Monday 7/21/08 MS receives it
Monday 7/21/08 MS states console is fixed or replaced and shipped out
Wednesday 7/23/08 UPS actually picks up package and starts shipping it
Friday 7/25/08 UPS Delivers console to me in the afternoon

10 days from beginning of failure to receiving repaired console.
__
I received my console back. It seems they may have replaced the guts. The console is somewhat quieter and the disc drive is definitely a lot less violent(it used spin down the discs really quickly when it wasn't using them and it'd be loud). Overall as my first 360 repair experience and a owner of a mfg. december 7th, 2005 console, I'm pleased enough.

My launch console just died. The official XBox Fanboy and House fanboy is RROD!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! and to top it off? I just got Soul Calibur IV early.
Karma.

I called Tuesday and have yet to receive my coffin. I assume it won't show up tomorrow, so I'm looking at Monday. Weak sauce.

My 360 FINALLY arrived at the repair center today, according to UPS. Now I just have to wait for MS to do its thing and send it back.

Well this was strange. My 360RRoD as I stated, but when I turned on my system it worked. When I turned it back off I got the RROD on start up. My power brick has a green light when the 360 is on, could it be the cable connecting from the brick to the 360? Or maybe It got hit by a thunder storm? Just thought there would be clear warning to the RROD like freezing or a RROD after playing for awhile, not simply starting up the system. I guess I'm in the stage of "denial" right now. Oh and despite the RROD I can still charge my wireless headset and controllers...

lilboo you might want consider the online repair route where you go over to xbox.com . I did that instead after three failed conversations on the phone and I got my coffin that way.

You might want to consider your unit RROD eminent. It's only a matter of time before it sticks to the three lights. I say call it in now.

Just got confirmation that my 360 shipped back to me. I sent it in on Monday and had it delayed due to the weather since Wednesday. I'm guessing that I'm getting back a refurb or new console due to the quick turnaround but I'll report back when it arrives.

Yeah I already called for it and they are sending me the coffin and label and/or electronic label over e-mail. I forget which since the rep said something about a e-mail in 24-72 hours *shrugs*. I'm not in a huge rush since I got Persona 3, a wii and a DS. Just dissapointed since I got Soul Calibur 4 before street date then had this happen. I'm considering toweling it before sending it in to get a few hours of SC4 but not sure if It's worth it since It's a "do it at your own risk" thing, and would like to keep my launch console if possible and not get a refurb.

I have another question which most people say yes and no, and some say read the FAQ! : Does any of the NEW consoles automatically get a year RROD warranty? IE. THe 60 gig when they are released.

Until M$ runs out of parts to repair the old models, you are going to still get them. The hard drive has nothing to do with the RRoD. So you are not going to get a new 60 gig drive. Whatever you send in is whatever you are going to get back. On rare occasions there has been exceptions (like having more than a certain of RRoD per year).

As for any of the consoles, yes you get 3 years of coverage. However the refurb your going to get will only have 3 months of coverage so if anything goes wrong after 3 months you might be SoL.

I already hit my 3 month mark and already had DRE, lock ups and wireless controller desync

Wow, so only three months of coverage of further RROD after I get a refurb? How are people on their 8th consoles then? Are they paying 100$ for each repair?

Though I'd rather spend $280 on a new console then $100 for each repair and get a refurb. That's just me. Getting a newer less likely to RROD versus launch console (although at this point who knows?) a new wireless controller, a couple of free arcade titles, and another three years of extended RROD service as well as the standard one year warranty versus 3 months on a refurb? Not to mention if it happended during the holiday probably a free game or two, bringing the cost down a bit.

You still get the 3 year rrod warranty (from original purchase date not refurb date) but you also get a 90 day complete warranty that covers everything.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

I have one more question before I'm done spamming this topic board, but I'll keep you guys updated on my turnaround time, and of course if my next 360 fails :p Are the so called "Jasper" units actually coming out this August? I remember reading about them last year and remember reading that they were supposed to come out this August.

Oooh, really?
So let me get this straight.

My 360 was registered on Sept 22, 2006
According to the new RRoD warranty, I should be covered until Sept 22, 2009?

PLUS, I bought that 2 year warranty for $60 or however much that was. (I bought that as soon as I registered my xbox)

..So how long do I have for my 360? Is it 2 years of ALL damages and 3 years of JUST RRoD?
So I'm covered for my RRoD until Sept 22, 2009 but Sept 22, 2008 my warranty to cover ALL damages is up?

If so,

Yeap, since the "majority" of the 360 problems is the RROD one or two lights isn't covered. Although from my hours of reading on this after getting my first RROD, it seems the two rings ie overheating will eventually lead to three your probably safe most of the time.

I actually regret paying $50 for the two year warranty knowing most of the problems are RRoD related.

4/11/08 - Called MS and they sent me a shipping label
4/16/08 - Dropped off box at UPS Store
4/21/08 - Repair center received my 360
4/26/08 - Shipped and is on its way back to me. *Although the tracking number just states Billing Information Received. It states a weight of 11.00 lbs. and I guess that means I should get a new Opus motherboard (non-HDMI Falcon) with a new power brick.

so it was 2 weeks between repairs, just got it back from RRoD yesterday. i expected a refurb system, but they sent back the same one. i noticed its much quieter. anyone know what they fixed?

Even though UPS says it delivered yesterday, the MS system says they are still waiting for the console to arrive. Is their system just really slow?
