XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

You know, I just realized something. Maybe others did too, but I'm realizing it now.

All 360s are destined to die because of a design flaw, therefore, MS should have a warranty for each console up until they stop releasing games for it completely. A 3 year warranty is just not enough, eventually a ton of people's warranties will run out and they'll be stuck with a RROD console. The day my 360 dies when out of warranty I'll sell all of my games and accessories and get a PS3.

This. SO this.

I was thinking for awhile that a lot of CAGs where unlucky because that's ALL i ever heard about. Some people's 360 RRoD'ing weeks, maybe months after their purchase. For me, I'm going on TWO years with no problem.

The fact that next year is my third year with it, once this is out of warranty there is no way in hell I'm going to buy a new one.

O yea I got my console back on Friday. I sent in a Halo edition and they sent me back a different Halo edition but a Halo edition non the less

This really depends on Microsoft and fleabay for me. They still have a repair number for Original Xboxs so I'm assuming it will be awhile before they run out of 360's to send you via repairs. If they make the "720" fully backwards with 360 games having a 360 will be a mute point in the long run anyways, especially since Microsoft has a better chance of making the next system backwards, it all depends on if we are willing to pay an extra $100+ on the system cost just to go backwards. Fleabay in the sense the price drops on the consoles like the OG XBox which you can score for under $50 shipped, sometimes less.

Looks like MS fixed my console already. It's supposed to be shipping back to me today. The package still weighs the same (8 lbs.), does this mean I'm getting the same type of mobo and chipset? I could have swore reading somewhere that you can tell what mobo and chipset your getting by the weight. I was hoping to get a newer chipset, hopefully one that won't RROD so soon.

My system is also being sent back to me, but the stated weight is 11 lbs. so does this mean they put a new motherboard in the system and added a power brick then sent it back to me? Also, what type of MB will it be most likely?

My 360 is scheduled to be delivered back to me on Friday. The tracking number says a signature is required. There probably won't be anyone home when they attempt to deliver it so that means they will leave a notice that can be signed to accept delivery without a signature and since there is no delivery on Fridays that means no 360 for me until Monday. So I guess my question is, does anyone know of a way to waive the signature requirement before UPS makes their 1st attempt to deliver a package so i can get my 360 on Friday?

I believe that they need a signature from you to ensure delivery. The previous 2 times that my system was returned I had to sign for it.

You could always sign a note and leave it at the door but I don't think that works for signature required packages just normal packages that the UPS man requests signatures for.

Sent my box via Staples (thank you, UPS center!) last Wednesday and it ended up being delivered at 9:10 last night. I still got an e-mail from MS today saying they haven't seen my system yet and they're wondering whether or not I want to go through with the repair. Loverly. I'll give that a few days so they can get their stuff together. ;)

I ended up shipping it in a 15" x 12" x 4" box from my local shipping store. It's an on-campus store so I can't point you to some chain stores or storage places that would have that size box, but it works almost perfectly. Just wrap up your system in about two feet worth of bubble wrap, place right in the middle of the box, and fill up the inch or so of space on each side with crumpled-up paper towels so it doesn't move during shipping. While it sounds odd, it will help prevent shifting on the cheap and the bubble-wrapped system should be about 4" in height, perfect for the box.

Sorry about not tossing up my box info earlier as requested but I was away for a wedding. Feel free to use that info for the FAQ if you want. The box only ended up costing me $3.10 over here, so hopefully similar boxes are around the same price.

I got 'mine' back today. The faceplate was off, and there was a Microsoft sticker placed on where the faceplate goes on top of. Anyone else know what this is and whether or not I should take it off?

got a lovely message from UPS....

THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED

...not only did MS screw me by selling me a device that is guaranteed to fail and purchase my own damn shipping box...they're now refusing to fix my system in a timely manner....

Call 'em and bitch.

I called last Tuesday to file my RROD repair and complain. They gave me free overnight shipping(along with a free controller and game) which sounded great but it still took until Monday to get the box(no sign of the freebies). I did get it off to FedEx, Monday night in time for overnight deliveries so it arrived at their center at 11am yesterday(tuesday). Not bad, except it seems to be stuck in the 'Waiting for device at service center' queue. They must be driving it over the border as we speak. :D

I am curious if they will overnight it back to me though.

Dude this happens a lot. As I mentioned before there maybe a limit of how many the repair center will receive a day and once they reach that limit, they will stop accepting units for that day and request to be re-delivered on another day.

I'm rather sure this happens on all the shipments. For some reason MS and UPS have the Xbox 360s shipping label as Mesquite, TX but they aren't considered delivered until they reach McAllen, Texas/Reynosa, Mexico where the service center is (500+ miles from Mesquite, TX.) Your package hasn't stopped it just takes another day to get to its final destination. Take a deep breathe you will have your system back in < two weeks.

just got off the phone with MS...asked what might the reason be to ask UPS to hold the package...and of course the MS rep didnt know why...and was quick to ask if theres any other questions and hung up...

well...nothing left to do but wait...

but Corvin...u got an extra controller AND a game?? nice...i'll be lucky if they send a clean 360 this time...the first time i got RRoD...they sent me a 360 that works but with alot of grim...

Not everyone gets "free stuff" from MS except for the 1 month xbl card. It's only if you are on multiple refurbished units that they *might* be kind enough to give you something else like a controller and game. Don't expect Call of Duty 4, Bioshock or whatever from them. Expect PGR3 or Kameo at most if any.

Yeah, this is my third RROD and ITDEFX is right on game choices. I had all but Gotham, but hey, it's something. They offered a controller or the vision camera, and I already have the camera. I asked for a 120GB hard drive but that was a no go. That'll probably take a few more RROD to even be considered.

According to the UPS site I should have my 360 back by Friday. I'm not gonna get my hopes up, though. For whatever reason, UPS can never get stuff to me on time.

Also, could someone answer my original question?

I got my console back today and it was 11.00 LBS, on the box it stated Falcon Opus and came with a new PSU. The Opus is just a non HDMI Falcon.

Just check when you get it back. Don't worry about what system you get when it comes. Just pop in your hard drive and enjoy your fixed system. Check the FAQ for the link to the site that shows you how to check to see if you got the new chips.

I read somewhere that a year is added on top of the original warranty when you get your console back. If that's true, then I think I'm good.

Good news today, UPS tried to deliver my system one day earlier than the original estimate. I'm assuming they left a sticker for me on the door indicating they attempted to deliver the package and I can sign this and check the box that I want them to leave the system when they try to deliver it tomorrow, correct? Or is there no way they will deliver my system without someone physically signing upon delivery?

As far as I know the sticker has a place to sign and if yo sign it the UPS delivery driver will leave the package.

Got a call from UPS. Said it would be delivering tomorrow. I hope it's true, cause my luck with UPS is pretty bad. Stuff always takes forever to get to me.

I just got my Xbox 360 right now. I can tell that it's a refurb unit because it has that sticker. It has a manufacturing date of Dec. 2005. The console is also a little grimy and dirty. Not exactly pleased with what I got, since I took care of my last one like it was a baby.

From what I can tell, it seems like I might have gotten a Falcon, not 100% sure, though. It's really hard to look into those little holes.

If you look on the shipping box it will have a sticker that tells you received.

Hey guys, i have a problem. MS will fix RRoD for free but screen freezes cost $100 to fix.

My system got RRoD so i sent away for a coffin, and now my system is playing fine. over the last couple days my system has been freezing a lot, should i just block the vents to trigger the Rrod once and for all before i send it in?

Thats exactly what I'd do, I wonder what happens if you send one in and when they check it doesn't RROD.

Mine had 1 red ring and I just lied and sent it in without even bothering to trigger the RROD. They fixed it and sent it back the same day. One of my friends said that her friend sent a modded 360 in and even got that fixed no problem.

Okay, so my Xbox froze during Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 last night and would freeze on the Xbox 360 boot screen on subsequent startups. The final time I tried I got the RROD. By the time I got around to calling, the system had cooled and was working fine so they wouldn't send a coffin.

Should I have insisted or just wait on the system to full on RROD? I have only had this Zephyr 11 months so the warranty is not an issue for another 2 years. I played a couple of hours last night and had 1 freeze but it rebooted fine and I was able to play a while after that.

It says that I got a Xenon Pro. Is that good or bad?

Alright, after reading for months how they've streamlined this process and people are getting their systems turned around in a day I'm a little peeved that I'm going on two weeks since I called them. I'm stuck in the "waiting for device at service center phase." This is after I got overnight shipping. Apparently that was a waste. grrr...

wait what? They are starting to put the name of the chip on the outside of the box when they send it to you? Now that's new. Spoo I want to add that info to the FAQ if you don't mind ok? I will update this weekend.

Xenon sounds familiar, like a launch unit/pre-falcon units.

It's been a week since I called MS for the box/label. Starting to wish I just requested a electronic label since I haven't received a box yet, granted the box costs what, $6?

Yes go ahead.
Does anybody know what it means if it says I got a "Xenon Pro" on the box?
I'm no expert but I believe it goes like this:
 • Xenon - launch consoles.
 • Zephyr - like Xenon but with HDMI
 • Falcon - 65 nm CPU and 90 nm GPU (Opus is Falcon without HDMI)
 • Jasper (not yet out) -65 nm CPU and 65 nm GPU

Thanks for all of the info spoo, you've helped out a lot. I'm going to be keeping the white box for when it happens again (I'm sure it will since it's a f**king launch unit).

I think Falcon is 80nm GPU.

My 360 just got the single ring/E74 error

And it hasn't been on in a while, and everything's plugged in correctly.

Great.

I haven't played the 360 in like a month, but it sounds like a jet engine specifically when I go to the xbox guide .

Might as well get a box now.

What's the point ? Most 360's these days sound like a jet engine anyways. You just have to learn to live with it. Just wait til it red rings.
