XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P
Last night I was playing L4D then suddenly a bright green line suddenly appeared in the center of my tv. So I turned off my tv and turned it back on and all of a sudden my screen is all green with glitchy lines. I assume I'm heading towards a red ring(E74), but not the infamous 3 Red rings of death.

Is there anything I should do, should I wait until my 360 officially red rings before calling support? Is it safe to continue playing with that console?
Your console is probably going to go. I had a similar thing happen and within a hand full of uses I get as you said the 4 red ring vs the 3.

One of my 5 that broke down did that. I took it back to the store before it red ringed (had a store warranty at the time) but I'm pretty damn sure that is a symptom before it goes kaput.
I should have done this. I told the first rep I talked to that this is the 5th console that RR'd on me and he didn't seem to care. I was hoping they would offer since they knew I've had so much trouble.
The guy promised me an HDMI port. I'll believe it when I see it.

I would wait on that too.

I think it's to soon to have rrod jasper boxes just yet, just have to give it a year until we start complaining and waiting for Vahalla chipset.

Got one red light last night with E74. :[

Called in a got my $99 repair charge down to $24.75. Going to send it in on Monday. Sob.

How old is your system? I could except they will replace your Xbox as many times as they have to for the first 2 years then after that its $25 a fix then after 3 years $100 a fix. But fuck $100 a fix before 3 years and before the first 2 there really shouldnt be any fee.

Technically it's a year and 5 or 6 weeks past the purchase date, but it was a Christmas gift, so it wasn't used before December 25th.

I just called in and repeated that and the fact that it wasn't my fault, I take good care of the system, why should I have to pay for their problem. I can stomach the $25.

Ya thats what I have already been planning. Calling and stating that look I have NES systems that are 20 years old that still work and original Playstations that are like 10-12 years old that still work flawlessly. So why should I have to pay for your companies fuck ups.

So I got the RROD like a week ago. I've had my Xbox unplugged for a few days and it's been under my TV on my little entertainment stand. I tried playing the next day after I got the RROD and still got them.
Yesterday, I moved it to my floor out in the open and had no problems whatsoever with it. Am I going to have problems in the future stil?

Almost certainly.
My console finally got repaired and shipped back out to me. I'm hoping for it to get back here sometime next week.
Ours went out about the same time and arrived about the same time as well. Mine is still sitting on "repair in progress". GRR!

They must be fully repairing mine, which I prefer anyway.

mine just died. i am not the original owner, but i do know the first owner. the only reason i bought it from him is because it was cheap and he had already gotten the RROD. i figured it wouldn't happen again. WRONG.

since he registered it the first time for repair, what needs to be done? just get him to submit another service order? if you call what do they require?

When I just dealt with my first one they were mostly interested in the consoles serial number and manufactures date. You are however going to have to log online and use the info that that guy registered for at some point. If it Red Ringed more then 3 months ago too acourding to the guys here you can expect a $100 fee. Try getting lippy with them though, especially if the system isnt very old. Some people have had good luck at getting them to reduce the fee(someone just mentioned getting theirs fixed for $25).

My system red ringed in March, and again just last week. The manufacture date was 3/3/08 and I didn't have to pay a fee to have it sent off. I even used the online website request form and it came up as no charge.

Getting mine shipped out tomorrow from Microsoft. I should have it by Friday (thank god). Now I can finally play the games I bought on Black Friday.

What was that I never even got an email saying it shipped. Got a 360 back, MFR date of 2008-07-25. Looking it over the warranty stick is a square instead of the usual rectangle. Now to find a disc I don't care about to make sure it doesn't scratch it to hell

Ya.....my system listed as shipped like a week ago....yet I never got an email. Also have yet to get my freaking 360.

Damnit, my Xbox says it's shipped on the Support page but I have yet to get back an e-mail with the tracking number. Should take around ~3 days since that's how long it took to get the Repair Center initially.

Well I didn't even get that, my status still says console repaired but not shipped. That is why I was so surprised to get it today.

Well like I said mine did the same thing, but good news is I got a call from UPS saying expect a package tomorrow. So apparently it listed on the Xbox site as shipped but I didnt get an email....now a week later it shows up.

I got an email saying that my 360 is being shipped back, but they haven't sent me the email with the tracking number or anything yet. Strange.

Well, the online wouldn't work since the previous owner got it repaired before. I guess it was registered in his name. I did call and with a little social engineering was able to convince the CSR that I was the previous owner. System was down, so he gave me the reference # and told me to call back tomorrow to create the service ticket.

@menikmati, FaintDeftone: I just got my 360 back - they haven't been sending e-mails or anything as far as I can tell. I got a phone call from UPS's automated system saying it would get dropped off today, and it got dropped off this evening.

@ITDEFX: This is important, it should make it into the original FAQ:
Tags: renew restore license downloaded content dlc "The song data you were accessing has become unavailable, and the game cannot proceed without it. Your game session has restarted"

When you get your 360 back, you will need to renew your licenses in order to play your DLC offline. The process has apparently changed now that they have the dashboard, as best as I can tell. This is now a TWO-STEP process, and is not what the sheet Microsoft sends you says it is. (This was very frustrating.) The first step is to go to Microsoft's site for "License Migration." You'll then be walked through the second step, and it's what you get on the sheet of paper (0508 Part No. X14-99754-01) ... except that the Account Management isn't under "Xbox Live Marketplace - it's under the right-most tab. The link is here:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

Hopefully that will save some of the rest of you an hour or two of frustration.

*Here's hoping Xbox #3 will work*

Wait what?!?!? :bomb:

I never got a tracking number either, but the "Check Repair Status" page on xbox.com is updating with the tracking information as it comes in. At this rate, it should get here right after I finish my last exam. Any of you other RROD'ers want to binge on Left 4 Dead later this week?

Apparently MS knew about the disc scratching issue of the 360 as well and did nothing about it because it would cost them a whopping $0.50 per console!

http://kotaku.com/5110843/microsoft-knew-about-360-disc+scratching-all-along

Just another thing to keep in mind when your yelling at someone trying to charge you $100 to fix your system. Man the 360 seriously has the most good games this gen and is totally worth owning....but MS seriously needs to get their shit together with hardware and customer service.
I never got a tracking number either, but the "Check Repair Status" page on xbox.com is updating with the tracking information as it comes in.
Yeah, mine has been sitting on Billing Received for three days now on the support page. I don't know if they actually shipped it or not!

Uh well my 360 red ringed a few days ago. I just unplugged everything and prayed it would still work. It did.

The weird thing about it is that it red ringed right after I moved it to another TV. Do you guys think unplugging the 360's power supply can be a cause? Every time I unplug it, that little light on the power brick turns red for a second or two and then turns off. Now I'm paranoid about moving the 360 anywhere...and the problem is, I need to move it back to the original spot to get on LIVE.

Damn now you got me paranoid. I move my 360 almost every night. We have a big flat screen TV kept in our game room. So every night we pick up the TV and carry it into the bedroom before bed to watch a movie on the 360.
Now they replaced my actual tracking details with "Your repaired console has been shipped and is on its way back to you."

Lame.
Yeah, the exact same thing just happened to me today, no more tracking details. I got a call from UPS today, though, saying that a package was being delivered tomorrow that needs an adult signature, so I think it's almost here.

Just got my 360 back and outside the power button being stiff it seems pretty good. Anything I should look out for? I hear people all the time talking about how they send different models out and they dont work as well as others so thats of interest.

How the fuck do you go through the licensing process? I followed the directions on the piece of paper but on NXE I cant find my download history to redownload stuff. So I went to the site that someone here recommended saying its now a 2 step process..... However the stupid thing requires you to be on your internet connection on your PC at the same time as on the 360....which I cant do. How fucking nice of MS to do that!

my 2 week old refurb that i got from Ebay, just red ringed on me, I got this one so that I could also have a system to play while I stayed at my moms, it was $99 on one of those ebay deal things, i just contacted theseller since it did come with a 90 day warranty. Reliability on refurbs must be 5% since I only got 2 weeks of enjoyment out of this thing.

It shows my unit is on the way back from the repair center and had its 1 year warranty expired but is now showing it as having a valid 1 year warranty from this date does that mean I'm getting a new unit?

Edit:Still shows the system as the original serial number but with a new one year warranty. So has microsoft been very generous and giving out full year warranties now or is it just a glitch?
Wait what?!?!? :bomb:
I spent a long time trying to figure out how to get my Rock Band licenses onto my new 360, and the directions they give on a sheet of paper (I could scan these and post somewhere, if it would help) don't work. I found this website (http://gamecentralnetwork.net/?id=2626) which very conveniently explained wtf was wrong. (I spent a long time trying out what MS said to do with no help; I even checked their support website and it didn't help, bleh.)

@mediamixerj - you're sure it's 1 year and not just the standard 90 days? (If it's a year, gratz, you must've gotten lucky.)

I'll post a picture to show it.

Its going through 2009 when it was previously expired.

Edit: Also better repair time than I expected as it was previously only in progress yesterday and its finished and already shipped out but no tracking info yet.

Ok so I am fucking livid. I just got off the phone with the Xbox support. So lets go through my Xbox repair processe. My system breaks after less then a year of use. I receive No email with tracking number and it takes over 2 weeks to get the damn thing back to me. The paper that came with my Xbox made no mention to the new license transfer system. The new liscense transfer system only works if you can connect to your PC AND the Xbox at the same time screwing anyone that uses a modem. So I call to see if Xbox support can help. I deal with 4 transfers none of whom were American/British each asked for personal info such as credit card info, each ask for my address and tons of other info vs accessing a system data base, not till the third did they even seem to understand what the problem really was and kept suggesting it was other problems that I made it clear it wasnt. Now I am told 1-6 business days to fix the DLC issue on my console. Finally they now have my warranty listed as the typical 3 months even though my console isnt a year old.

I am fucking livid.....dont think there is a strong enough word for how fucking pissed off I am. MS makes a console that scratches disks and dies on people, knows about it, ships it out anyways trying to screw people and save a buck....then fucking after law suits attempts to half ass fix the problem. fuck this, I will NOT be screwed this way. I have never yelled at a rep over the phone before and I have never talked law suit before(even when I was re ended in a car accident that wasnt my fault) but when I contact them tomorrow to talk about this shit I will be yelling and if they don't fix it I WILL be looking into one of those o so lucrative class action law suits since their the only thing that seem to get these companies to do the right thing.

so it looks like people's DRM licenses aren't transferred when xboxes are being returned. i got mine back today and of course, nothing works offline, even after redownloading licenses.

did anyone get a box back with the license actually transferred already?
or does anyone have experience with getting support to actually transfer the license?

Posted on the previous page - I spent about an hour or two trying to get it figured out yesterday.

@ MSI: I don't think they need to be hooked up simultaneously (the PC and the Xbox) ... the site says there's a 30 minute window, so you could swap to one and back, theoretically. Probably still hard for dial-up.

man i tried the towel trick to maybe get a day or 2 to beat mirrors edge, the damn thing is shot, the fans inside dont even move anymore.

OK, I have two coffins coming for me. But, I have a problem. I toweled the 360s to get them to work temporarily. What do I do if the coffins get here and the 360s haven't red ringed again? Anyway to induce the RROD? Maybe towel it again?

If the power supply is not plugged in properly it will give you red lights (or maybe just one) but it isn't the same as the three red lights of death. I got this once and after referencing the manual found out what the "error code" was. There are also different combinations for overheating and other things, similar to the error beeps a computer will give when it can't boot.
