XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

Got an email back from MS today on my question as to why I have a 3 month warranty vs a 2 year warranty when on their own site it states you will receiver whichever is longer, the remainder of your original warranty or 90 days. All the email said was we understand that you have questions about our warranty.....then copy pasted me the warranty info.....

So I send them an email in which I quote from their warranty info page....and their solution is to send me the warranty info page.......

On the phone with customer support again. I really hate dealing with this shit. I am so uncomfortable being angry or snotty with people on the phone because I realize its not their fault but MS's fault...I also feel like the typical spoiled American because here I am yelling at some low wage Indian person because my American toy doesnt work.
Unfortunately you have to do what you have to do, if screaming like a spoiled American gets it done thems the breaks
I understand and thats why I will do what I have to do. But I freak hate yelling at people from other countries. Put me on the phone with an American and ill say I am sorry I know this is not your fault and then procede to let off a stream of anger and profanity like no other. But with Chinese/Indians I just feel bad.

And God damn the Xbox Support music is loud as shit. Especially whenever the Halo song comes on. Been on the phone less then 10 mins and I am already on my 4th transfer.

Oh I feel the same way but I have no idea if they keep a gun to their heads or something because my last few calls had CS reps who refused to deviate from that script for even a minute, I lost my patience right about then

Well that was what had to happen. They kept as you said reading the same fucking script. It even starts and ends the same god damn way! After 4 people doing it I figured id try email support but as I said email support just fucking copy pasted a script too!

So anyways think after getting angry I get the issue fixed. I can access Castle Crashers and Assault Heroes after re downloading them....so while its a pain in the ass I probaly will just have to go back and redownload all my games and Rock Band Songs........

As for the warranty I spoke to someone and finally got what sounds like a good answer but makes me a little nervous. He says that the warranty info shown on their site is often wrong. That it essentially drops to a 3 month warranty because it voids the 3 year on 4 Ring and other non 3 ring fixes. That your warranty always stays 3 years to the date of purhcase. So my warranty while showing 3 months is still a 2 year warranty. I wrote the refference number and the guys name down and am about to email it to myself that way if I have an issue after the 3 month warranty and they try and make me pay I can cram it down their throat.

They wouldn't be working if you weren't a spoiled American with a spoiled toy.

So, y'know, not that you have carte blanche to get all racist on the phone with them; but, yeah, some good stern, assertive language will get you places. That and 'let me talk to your supervisor.'

I think the let me talk to a manager was what got the job done. Realistically I talked in a stern voice but only dropped like 2 f bombs the whole 40 mins on the phone and didnt curse much besides that. I only gave a bratty rant about service once too. I think talking to that first person and immediatly saying "I was transfered 4 times yesterday and no one was able to fix my problem, I want to talk to your manager or someone that has power to do something immediately" is what made the difference.

So thats my reccomendation to the rest of you ask to talk to a manager and be stern but polite. My brother in law is going through similar problems with customer support right now since his live acount was stolen and credit card ran up....but listening to him on the phone was just wrong. He was like mocking them being indian and saying crap like let me talk to someone that speaks English now habib. Meanwhile he has been dealing with this problem for 3 weeks now and mine was fixed in 2 days!
If I don't get a phone call today from UPS, looks like I'll have to wait until next week. The 3 week period is creeping up argh.
That reminded me for shits and giggles to check my status on the support page, console never updated to shipped even though I got it on Monday. Heck UPS never called me or had me sign for it.

WOOT got mine back today! I've never been so happy. Going to load up Gears and GHWT. My console has the same serial and stuff, hopefully the insides are fixed.

I got mine back today, too, and it looks to be the same as the one that I sent in (same serial, at least). I played it for a while and did the license transfer thing, no problems so far. Fingers crossed!

i read the faq but didnt see anything about requesting repair online. i go to "console management" then "repair your console". it tells me to register it. i do. then it says i have no console being repaired. i thought i was gonna get an option to request a coffin or something.

So, well um, I'm new to this red ringing of 360s, but mine just did it today, and I was wondering what the best course of action would be? With Christmas right around the corner, it seems like I'm SOL, but I was wondering what you guys think?

I am ready to just request a coffin online, so I don't have to bother getting a box and worrying if something more will happen on its way to Texas. Also, if I do the towel trick just to use it during Christmas, and send the 360 soon thereafter, is there anyway I would get penalized for this? I'm just in a bit of a state of panic, as several Christmas presents are supposed to revolve around the use of this Xbox...

This happened to me, I sent mine in two weeks ago and after I got the email saying it was fixed I couldn't check the status anymore (I think they gave me a refurb). I never got a call or an email, and just last night it was sitting on my front porch with some Amazon boxes like a puppy waiting to come in.

Last time I sent it in it needed a signature to get released, seems they've changed their methods and process. I will say that I'm happier this time since I was without it for 2 weeks versus the 3 weeks it was gone last time.

Interesting enough I was able to put on my HDD, download the new FW (which took about 3 seconds), run through the annoying NXE video, and bring up one of my XBLA games without having to redownload (after signing on with my saved profile).

I'm kind of angry that I didn't get my own console back. I got one returned to me with a couple of black scuff marks and a different DVD drive in it. It all seems to work though, so I'm not complaining too much.

So mine has red-ringed multiple times, with a mess of other problems, and I requested the repair. Although at this moment, it seems to be working perfectly fine again. They aren't actually going to send this shit right back to me if it isn't red-ringing on arrival, are they?

Ugh, the video crapped out on mine. I was playing Left 4 Dead last night and the screen went all pixelated and then black, no RROD though. Tried some other a/v cables on some other tv's, still no video. Now I wait for the coffin to arrive...

So It's safe to assume now you'll get your old XBox back then rather then a refurb?

That's interesting, because I thought you would always get a refurb back. Maybe they ran out of repaired stock piles?

I received mine back and it's the same one but the drive is way quieter (thanks!). They must be swapping parts as well as repairing the main problem.

Anyway, I re-downloaded all my content. I don't use my non-XBL "Guest" profile much and last night, I realized that my TMNT and Worms XBLA games cannot be played under the "Guest" profile. It shows the games but it clearly labels it as "Trial Game demo" but Aegis Wing and Hexic are full versions. Odd. Is this how it has always worked for paid XBLA games? Or does the license/access have something to do with my repair of console?

Same thing happened to me. I did have the issue number (which I copied from the online repair request), so once I got the "You have no consoles being repaired," I logged in using the Customer Service Number + ZIP Code (rather than using the gamertag), found the new (refurb) console's number, and registered that console to me. I was then able to track normally through my gamertag.

So the other night some CS from M$ called to follow-up on my last customer service call and get feedback, and I pretty much told them "The CS rep [who was American] was fine, but the overall process sucks." I complained about the lack of proper tracking information, and that my last Xbox (a refurb to replace the first RRoD) was DOA. Hopefully they take those factors into account and make things better for the rest of us.

Arghghhh. My 360 just got the RRoD. I tried to do the repair procedure online, but when I registered the console it said it has already been registered. This is not the initial 360 we owned, so I assume it was at one point someone else's. I really feel like buying a new 360, but anyways-- what do I do now? Should I just call in or what?

You're up shit creek right now then, my boy just went through the same thing and got told while his system was under warranty they won't honor it since it wasn't in his name. Yet oddly they told him hey give us 99 bucks and we'll look the other way and repair it

I got greeted with a RRoD a couple hours ago. Out of nowhere, no signs leading up to it. Had a couple solid play sessions earlier too.

Signed up for my coffin online. For now I just toweled it and its working again. Hopefully it works through Christmas. Just want to have it last long enough to play some Rock Band with the family.

Ugh, you must be kidding. That makes no sense. If they issued me a 360 that was not mine, how could they not honor it? It wouldn't be my fault. Whatever, I'll just mouth off tomorrow and I'm sure they'll buy into my story.

Hopefully it is just a simple mistake they can sort out, better get that screaming voice ready just in case ;)

Instead of screaming try intially being very very angry then calm down say your sorry and use cool logic the whole time occasionally reminding them how angry you are. Worked for me and it does with many other companies too. They know they have a firecracker on their hand but see your willing to calm down and that you can be polite. Also when you are yelling say you want to talk to the manager, that you have been going through this process and no one is helping so you want to talk to a manager today.

I was arguing with the guy back and forth as to why they wouldn't cover the system even though it was under warranty, he said if you bought it used it voids you warranty, what kind of crap is that? Buying a used system falls in the same category as modding one to play bootlegs? So now im forced to go through an extreme measure to get my system running again, anyone ever notice the 360 shell is like that of an egg ;-)

For some reason whenever we call for a RROD, we get the nicest customer service dude. This guy sounded like he was high and relaxed, but whatever. He couldn't get my order processed because of some update with the online server order tracking crap? I don't know, but I have to call again within the next few hours. Blah.

Did you try going online to "Register Console" (as if you got a new one), then registering it through that? (support.xbox.com -> on the left tool bar, select Register a Console) You may get a "this console is already registered" message, but they'll let you change the registration info; all you need is the serial number (from what I recall).

I got my original 360 used from a guy at work, and that's what I had to do when I sent it in to MS.

Just for the records, i got my baby back after 3 weeks...... the only downside i that ups screw my adress and i had to go to the distribution center to get my package personally.....

I got the exact message and I guess when I called thats what the guy on the other line did.

EDIT: Called in again. This time they processed my request. Guy was like, "your warranty expired in June, but luckily MS is offered an extended 3-year warranty." I kinda laughed, as if MS "luckily" gave us a second chance, as if the hardware issue was my fault-- lol. Packed an old Amazon box, stuffed some newspaper and the 360. Time to pack this baby up. ;[ It's weird how this happened almost exactly around the same time last year, before Xmas. Last time it got the ring, it was whenI was about to play NBA 2k8. This time it got the ring when I was about to play NBA 2k9. Spooky.

Wait, am I supposed to pay for the package shipment?

Not really a RROd issue, but this seemed like the best place to ask this:

I was playing some COD4 online earlier, and my console slowly started artifacting. Horrified at the idea of spending Christmas break without a 360, I shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I turned it back on and everything was fine; I was able to play for several hours without any problems.

What happened?

if you're packing the 360 yourself they should email you a label.

My Xbox360 Currently RROD.

I need to know what options I have to Fix it.

Here are some of my failures:

 • No Warranty
 • Xbox Opened
Towel Trick makes it Worse I believe.

I really want my xbox before Christmas
If some one has something/anything that can fix my lil one.
That would be really great,

Happy Holidays,
Ace.

Oh, yeah, okay. Just making sure. I wanted to schedule a pick-up, but I guess they've changed something and now you have to pay for that to happen (last time I shipped out my coffin, they didn't charge for to pick up the package). Guess I'll stop by UPS when I'm driving back home. =p
Didn't need its own thread. Refer to the RROD FAQ up top.
I DID refer to this thread before i posted it doesnt say anything about Opened/Warranty Void related problems.

please read MY thread.

I requested my coffin online yesterday and got an email it should arrive tomorrow. Nice. I won't send it in till next week though. Towel got it going and hopefully it'll last through Friday at least.

Well, it was inevitable, my nearly three year old, nearly launch 360 red ringed on Saturday. I belted out quite the NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! when it happened. I was quite upset since I planned on using it during the holidays. I didn't start feeling better about it until after I realized that a) this was my first RROD and b) I still have 4 days left on my three year warranty!!!!

Talk about timing!

Before Christmas? Nothing unless you buy a new one. Don't even think about trying to swap yours for one you buy from the store because they track serial numbers. Just so you know...

There's always the option of fixing it yourself, however I can't endorse doing that. There's always the possibility of it still having/getting the RROD, and the possibility of the Xbox 360 being damaged/broken due to misrepair or handling.

So fixing it yourself is really a option, but like I said I can't endorse it. However having it by Christmas is basically not going to happen if you send it out to Microsoft.

Yeah, so post your question in the other thread.
