XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

I sent in my Elite (bought in Summer 2007) for a RROD repair and UPS says I'll get it tomorrow. I'll check my serial # to see if I get the same one back. Assuming it is different, how do you know if you got a refurb or a new one? Man, I hope I at least get a Jasper. Fingers crossed . . .

On the back it will say "Service Date." Also usually you can also pop off your faceplate and if you've got the silver Microsoft label, it's new...If it's a paper-ish label (like what's on the side of new games) then it's a refurb.

WhipSmart, thanks for the info!

Generally speaking, what processor are people getting lately with their refurbished Elites?

just got the label so will be shipping mine off by the weekend. the only box I could fine is one of those flat rate priority mail ones from the USPS that someone sent me stuff in. Also can I just drop it off at the post office (USPS) even though the shipping label is through UPS?

So i sent off for the label (rrod) and im out of warranty and it said that I owed $0.

Does that mean I wont have to pay or do they get the console and then hold it for ransom?

Any suggestions for what to do with two broken 360s (one's E74 and one's E73). the E74's got a broken seal and the E73 was a refurb I bought. I've preordered the FFXIII bundle, but don't want an island of misfit 360s forming in my garage...

Any feedback from those who have sent their Elites to MS?

You could probably get away with using the box, but you should either turn the box inside out and re-tape it or cross out the USPS logos. And no, you can't drop it off at USPS unless you're mailing it as USPS at your own expense. Take it to a UPS store, catch a UPS driver on the way around, or pay to have them pick it up.

You're free and clear. Now it's just playing the crapshoot on what you get back.

From what I've been told it's possible to repair E74 yourself with just a few dollars worth of parts. Poke around Google and Youtube for guides. Not sure about E73.

Or just sell them to Gamestop. Just tell the whatever error it gets, and you can probably get $50 credit for it. At least I did with mine in January (basically $50 less than what you get for a working one).

Only problem is, I maybe shouldn't have bought an Arcade Jasper to replace it, as now I want the Final Fantasy Xbox :(

UPS tracking says my Elite (well, an Elite) should be delivered today. Can't wait to get home! Please, may it be a Jasper! Is checking the amps the best way to tell? I've Google searched but came up with conflicting info.

Just received my xbox after a 3 week break and I'm making up for lost time. This guide is great, after the fact, now I see a few symptoms that happened just before my RROD. Keep up the good work, OP!

thanks for the suggestions WSBpanky.

assuming I get a different console back, how would a future license transfer work since I don't have my original console? note that I'll only do a transfer if I buy a new unit myself.

The licenses are stored on your gamertag and may be moved to different consoles, so you don't need your old console to do a transfer, and long as you have a console to tie them to.

Gamestop will take them if they have broken seals? If they're broken, do the same console requirements hold (power brick, a/v cable, etc.)
What chipset did you get?
I'm not sure. I'm guessing I'd have to take the faceplate off in order to check? Will report back. :)

got my elite all packed up just to realize there's no 'close' UPS near me...so I have to wait for a day I have a few hours to spare :bomb:

anyway I was checking on youtube and saw some packing/shipping 360 vids, even though nearly all were ones where M$ sent them a coffin with packing material. one user said you had to include your signed receipt. the shipping label I was sent has a recipet part too with a place for my signature as well as the date I ship it. does this mean I have to include this inside the package too? anything else I may need to include before I reopen and retape?

Ugh, got my second RROD tonight. I was kind of hoping to get one before my warranty expired in September but it is still a pisser when it actually happens.
Gamestop will take them if they have broken seals?
YMMV. The employees are suppose to check, and they won't take them if the seal is broken. Whether or not they check is another story.

Just opened my box from UPS and I got a refurb'd 360. How can I tell what chipset is inside? The OP showed a picture of a label which clearly states the chipset but I found no such label on my box...

BTW I sent it out on 2/19 from socal and just got it back today. A little of 2 weeks turnaround... good thing I went to vegas last weekend or I would have bought a new xbox or ps3...

*Only* way to tell is by looking at the power connector

http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3472&p=3

EDIT: I mean the connection on the *system*, not the one on the power supply.

Regarding the Power Supplies:

I have a 175W one, does that mean it will work with systems that need the 150W as well as the 175?

And if they send one back that uses a 203W, do I need to have MS send a usable power supply then?

Also had the weirdest experience ever in regards to tracking my package to Texas.
Went out for delivery on the 11th to the repair facility, and it just updated today that they received the package, and the status between then was Console Shipped Back.

Something weird must have been going on with UPS as I had the same thing Friday. Mine has moved to the Console under repair status over the weekend. This repair seems to be taking longer than the first one a couple of years ago.

So I sent my 360 to MS saying I had an E74 when I really only had a disc error and it was out of warranty. Checking the repair status, it says my system is in warranty until June now. Does that mean they repaired my system, or is it at least a good sign?

Actually they still send me the wonderful "coffins" for the repairs. The only way they do it is if you order the repair online. They will NOT send one if you call.

Though I wouldn't waste time with the online system since when you need a repair apparently you can now just ask about their Advance Exchange Program. With this they will send you a replacement Xbox 360 within 3-5 business days :applause:. Then you merely use the box they send the replacement in to send the dead xbox to them. You do need a credit card for collateral understandably. So if you need a repair call support (if in warranty of course) and ask about that program.

I looked for the info on their Advance Exchange Program online and it is either new or they don't want us to know about it cuz I can't find anything on it. Hope this helps more than I. I scheduled mine to be delivered and it should be here by Wednesday or Thursday. Better than waiting 3 weeks.

Lastly, the poster above. If you have a new warranty than yes, this should mean your xbox has been repaired and either will be, or has been, shipped.
Next time you need to send off your 360 and Microsoft isn't sending coffins any more, you should send it off in a proper coffin:

http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/sli...ied_send_it_off_style_rrod_coffin_accessory_/
That was a great idea, but knowing MS, they would probably send it back as it is not in the box they shipped to you.

I might add this to the FAQ sometime soon.. Thanks for the info.
so my 360 finally arrived there safely. should I worry that it still shows out of warranty and that I might be charged?
Nothing will be charged unless you have already given them a credit card number. If you haven't, they will not touch it if they need money from you. They will call/email (etc.) and ask for payment before they will touch an out of warranty system (some have gotten lucky, though, and maybe you will too).

Wow, I've been stuck at Billing Information Received on the return package now for 2.5 days now. Hopefully the system is just being glitchy updating again.

Doubt it, mine stayed at BILLING for almost 6 days before they shipped it.
Got my refurb back today. It sure is a pain in the ass redownloading everything.
oh damn we have to redownload everything :bomb:? so what's the point of the having updates and patches saved to the hdd?
Why do you have to re-download everything? I was under the impression it saved to the HDD?
Some games have some stupid licensing issues that you have to re-download in order to play it.
Why do you have to re-download everything? I was under the impression it saved to the HDD?
I had a notice that I had to redownload everything in the box with my refurb. I don't know why of if it really matters in you don't.

Got my 360 back finally, and saying it had an E74 when it didn't ,worked. Thanks for whoever posted they did that. Now I just need to buy games for it.

bought my 20gb xbox in the end of 2008 as they were being phased out (it was a killer deal posted here!)

Died couple days ago, probably from my playing too much FF13. Info here is nice and helpful. I'm gonna box it up now and send it out tomorrow morning hopefully.

here's to praying for a new Jasper =/

Anyways, a question: ppl keep saying they might need to redownload stuff. I took out my harddrive too. When I get the 360 back, do i just pop that in, and then recover my XBL account? or are there more steps?
Indeed. And no need to recover your GT.
However, when you do a license transfer to a newly purchased console and said new console dies with a E67 / DVD drive error, you'd think MS would just replace the DVD drive in it and be done with it.

Nope. They replaced it and it turned into a week's worth of mess getting someone on the Tier 3 support to get the right person to do the license transfer again on their end.
I bought my first 360 in December of 2007. It just red-ringed on me while playing ME2.
Falcon? If it was, my Falcon was purchased maybe a month before that, and died around the first of the year. Soooo apparently Falcons have a 2 year life span

Heck, it beats my earlier models.
Falcon?
I don't remember the names. It was the 20GB Pro model with the Elite style added heatsinks. I remember being disappointed when I got it, but it ran fine until last night.

(edit) I looked it up. Mine was a Zephyr.

I really hope the one they send back has the HDMI port, since that's how I had mine hooked up to my TV.

well I bought my first 360 during Black friday 2008...it was an elite holiday bundle (kunfu panda/lego indy) and e74/e73d around February. so my falcon elite did not have a 2 year lifespan.

anyway I got another [elite] console last week. how can I tell if it is a refurb or a new console? the console is new looking in that it is very clean and no visible scratches so far. the labels also look fresh. I'm not sure if it is a jasper. the console is loud when it's powered on but seems to be more quiet after that.

and it also took much longer than i recal to install discs the the hdd (no idea that disc installs are also tied to a console). I only redownloaded/installed a few things...so it'll be hell when I actually want to play some other games
