Update:

Seems as if microsoft is scared of home and is aparently doing a second steal of ideas... first Miis and now a rip-off (even bigger rip off than Miis IMHO) of sony's PS3 Home...

A rumor that began on the 4chan message boards is lighting up the internet this evening. The rumor is fueled by two images of what is supposedly the Xbox 360's answer to the PS3 Home service. Utilizing the already rumored Avatars, My GamerPad appears to be a virtual home for the cartoon-like characters. While in a perfect world we'd like to think every rumor is true, this one seems a little too out of left field. Firstly, and let's be honest, it looks terrible. Secondly, Home has yet to release -- let alone establish itself as a viable online service. Why copy a concept that has seen more delays than Duke Nukem Forever (of course we're kidding)? If it happens to be true, and we assume it's a gag from the Photoshopping aficionados from 4Chan, we're going to go ahead and Opt Out now. Check out the My GamerPad logo after the jump.

Note: Just so we're clear, 4chan is not a trustworthy source hence our apprehension to believe this rumor. Nevertheless, it's our job to report these rumors.
most blatant ripoff ever. at least don't be so damn straightforward.

Not really all that blatant, and definitely not the most blatant rip-off ever.

That actually seems a lot better, and fuller, than the Mii concept.

Yeah...they're 'Avatars', they look WAY MORE realistic than the Wii's Mii's.

true, but from what it sounds like, the "newton" remote controllers will be launching around the same time... still very straightforward.

so yeah, blatant ripoff.

not to make myself sond like a sony lover, but at least in home the avatars don't resemble Miis one bit while these take a peice of their pie.

It's definitely in vein of the Wii / Mii, but it's not completely blatant. It seems like they did their own thing with the Mii concept.

We should be discussing how many Microsoft Points the clothing will cost...

blatant can mean different things between different people so yeah, i get what you mean now. I'm still not happy about it but yeah...

in terms of clothing, they should do it similar to how gamerpics are priced and packed. this also better not make gamerpics obsolete or alot of people may get pissed.

I wonder what it means by "available this holiday for all Xbox LIVE connected members and this spring for all new console owners"? I thought maybe they'd make them available for Gold members first, but then the "new console owners" part makes no sense.

I actually don't think this is a horrible idea. I'd be down with games having unlockable clothing pieces like they do with gamerpics. The only thing I'd be worried about is how much they're going to charge for this stuff. It'd be awesome if they released some tools like forza2 so you could make your own shirts and such.

I think it probably means we're going to get it with the winter update and new consoles will come bundled with said update in the spring.

don't get me wrong, it's a great idea it's just that the way it's executed that bothers me.

"Oh God why?" ...I say good, maybe they'll be better then Nintendo's under-developed, over-simplified "Miis." Miis are a great idea, but Nintendo didn't give enough options.... then again they do that with everything lately.

Thats cool, they'll probably do a lot more with them than Nintendo has anyway. Downloadable Avatar shirts, accessories, etc to go with promotions and in game stuff. Definitely going the more cartoony route versus Home, but I like it still. Its a way to tell Nintendo to step their game up.

Just my thought though.

Hes got a point, all of the points spent on gamer pics are down the toilet. MS should make so that people who want it can just buy it with some points, while others can keep the gamer pics.

If my avatar can wear a Vikings jersey, I'll be thrilled.
Otherwise, I want to rep my vikings, not some silly computerized version of myself.
Good idea though (Nintendos)

I don't have much a problem with it. More advanced avatars are becoming the norm with the Miis, Home on the PS3 etc. MS has to keep pace.

I don't care much about it myself.

I'd be surprised if these replace gamerpics completely. Most likely you'll be able to choose one or the other.

I'm not looking forward to the inevitable paying for accessories, though. Charging for gamerpics is already kind of sketchy. (Although, at this point I would probably pay a couple bucks if Sony would come out with some new PSN avatars.)

Of course they'll charge if you want custom shit. I wouldn't mind wearing the free advertiser's crap. Free Mountain Dew shirts for all!

In the spirit of Penny Arcade, they will break the avatar up into 3 sections, and charge 5 bucks for each to make one total avatar.

Fanboys will jump in joy at the "deal" they are getting...

XBLA. Virtual Console.

Nothing is "sacred." Get over it and be glad that sometimes companies realize when something is a good idea and decide to expand on it.

Highly unlikely this means Gamerpics are gone completely. People paid for them, there would be a pretty fucking massive uproar if they were suddenly deleted from the XBox Live framework.

Is it just me, or do they look remarkably like rejected characters from the Hot Shots Golf series? I assume they'll just have some generic crap for free and then we can buy whatever else we want.
I think this is really awesome akshully. Sure it's a rip-off, but what isn't these days?

Out of spite I'm making one of you. If you're good you'll get a samurai helmet.
don't forget to add the groin that's attached to my left ear.

I kinda like it. I think gamer pics would stay if you're just browsing through a list. Kind of reminds me of the DOA4/XBV2 lobby. Would give them a edge up if you could make them look like other game characters, like Tina or Ryu from DOA.

I don't think the execution is that awful either, although the timing is questionable. I can understand why some are quick to jump on companies that "copycat" from other companies but personally as an end-user I like that MS is taking things that obviously have worked well for other companies (ahem.. Nintendo) and incorporate and enhance it into their own product. For me, it's not so much who's done it first but who does it best overall.

It's just scary at times how easy it is to see how companies leech off other's ideas.

Cool. Blatant ripoffs, yeah, but a cool feature I'll use on a console that I play more than once every 3 or so months.

Your gimmick stinks.

Hard.

Radda, radda?

Seriously though, 360 gamers get this in addition to an already great and swiftly growing library of titles then some Avatars that will be novel for a bit then end up being useless. No big whoop.

Would be cool is MS would offer it for free. But of course not, I'll have to pay $5 for a new T-Shirt. fuck you Microsoft. I refuse to pay for live or DLC. Soon, I will be dumping my 360 for a PS3.

well, set aside the fact that none of this has been detailed by MS yet. I just have to point out you wouldn't "Have" to buy a new T-shirt. you would have the option to buy a new T-shirt. just because you can buy a T-shirt for your super deformed waste of time doesn't mean you will be forced to. you know, free will an all.

Well obviously I won't HAVE to, but in order to make the whole thing worth while, I'll want to customize at some point. It just pisses me off that MS charges so much for data that they can reproduce free of charge. Games I can sort of understand, but c'mon MS, you're charging for freaking themes?!?! Jackasses.

You really can't say that it's a complete rip off yet.
Miis are only used in the Wii ___ series (Sports, Play, Fit). They appear in a few games (both first party and third)...but they aren't used a lot.

I can't imagine MS putting out a game where you play as your avatar.
Should we imagine that NEXT christmas we'll see a MS version of Wii Fit? :whistle2:\

This excites me for the NEXT gen. Most likely, I can see Sony & MS going the Wii route. But, the way the Wii SHOULD have gone: HD + actual HDD space

But isn't that like complaining that Hardware stores sell paint? You don't actually need it for the integral structure of your house, its only for aesthetic purposes.
