• You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.

What is this?

Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :

1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2026. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.

The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

I got to wonder how much work SmartDelivery is going to be for devs. Supposedly games on Series S will be smaller because 4K assets are only going to be installed/downloaded if you have a Series X. We already have games that play in 1080 or 4K depending on which console you play it on with no difference in file size which means some devs might not even bother having separate assets.

Of course the other benefit of SD is the ability to only install single player or multiplayer (or select games in a collection like with MCC) but can you imagine Call of Duty doing this? They already have so few people playing the campaign that they decided against including one with Black Ops 4. This might lead to even more games going multiplayer only.

There's also both machines launching together instead of adapting midstream. I think that will make a difference in reducing complications.

I can't wait for a big info dump/AMA. We're still going around in circles off of nothing more than baseless speculation.

I wonder if the new machines will make HTPCs pointless. Plex solves most of my problems, but there's still a fair number of files that don't play right. Giving out/directly supporting DTSX is great news. My Atmos bar doesn't support it, but I see more movies release with only DTSX tracks lately.

Alright everybody. Digital Foundry just dropped LOTS of info on Xbox Series S backwards compatibility and things are much better than we first thought for the all digital next-gen system!

"The Series S improves BC games quite a bit. Backwards compatible games from the vintage 2001 Xbox - the 'OG' machine - we've confirmed that Xbox Series S will run these games at an enhanced resolution. There's a 3x boost to resolution on both axes, meaning that titles targeting 480p on the original machine will hit a maximum of 1440p on Series S, presumably with a range of performance benefits. The good news continues with the enhanced Xbox 360 titles that were released for Xbox One X. These games will also be enhanced for Series S, this time running with a 2x2 resolution multiplier, bringing titles that ran at native 720p up to 1440p. While this doesn't match the max 4K we saw on Xbox One X, there is the potential for improved performance elsewhere thanks to the much faster Zen 2 CPU architecture. In scenarios where Xbox One X was limited by its Jaguar CPU cores, Series S has much more headroom.

For original Xbox One games, it's already been confirmed that the ways in which Series S and Series X handle Xbox One titles varies. Only the Series X will benefit from Xbox One X enhancements to existing games - which typically boils down to resolution boosts, higher quality textures and other graphics-driven effects. However, the Xbox Series S brings its additional horsepower to bear in improving the experience of Xbox One titles in its own way. This is more limiting in some respects (a game hard-coded to run at 900p will not run any higher on Series S, for example) but the new console benefits from increased resolutions in games that use dynamic resolution scaling, as well as improvements to texture filtering quality. Obviously, running games from solid state storage reduces loading times significantly, while the Auto HDR feature we've seen running on Series X also features on Series S - all games should present nicely on HDR screens, whether they natively support high dynamic range or not. It's a feature I personally can't wait to test. Finally, it goes without saying that CPU-limited titles should also deliver more stable performance at target frame-rates.

However, there is one more feature that Microsoft has only mentioned in passing - and now we know more details, we're excited by it: the idea that select Xbox One titles will run at double the frame-rate on the new consoles, including Series S.

"We designed the Series S to enhance the Xbox One S games in a way that the Xbox One X can't do," system architect Andrew Goossen tells us. "We made it easy for existing Xbox One S games to be updated to run with double the frame-rate when played on Series S as well. When games are updated, existing games can query to determine whether they're running on the new console. And in terms of the performance, the Series S provides well over double the effective CPU and GPU performance over the Xbox One, making it pretty straightforward for the games to do this. And in fact, the Series S GPU runs the Xbox One S games with better performance than the Xbox One X."

The way Xbox One X handled non-enhanced Xbox One S titles was interesting - effectively users saw the enhanced GPU only running at half-rate, its compute units split between vertex and pixel processing. The new consoles are designed to run legacy Xbox One titles with the full power of both CPU and the new RDNA 2 GPUs.

I am leaning towards Far Cry 4, I believe it has a slightly different gameplay when compared Far Cry 5. I will take a look at Primal as well!

Far Cry 4’s skill/perk system is like Far Cry 3’s and there’s no buddy system like there was in 5 and New Dawn. While Primal still feels like a Far Cry game, the setting, weapons and skills really set it apart. Some people don’t like it, some do. I never finished it because another game pulled me away. I need to go back and finish it.

Fair enough. Just think it was a missed opportunity to not support X enhancements.
My understanding is Xbone games currently come in 2 versions: Xbone OG (worst version of current gen console games) and Xbone X (best version of current gen console games). Series S is going to only play the Xbone OG versions of games, but it will play them as well as they are programmed to be. So games with "dynamic" resolution and FPS will be maxed out to whatever the cap is, but games with locked resolution/FPS are stuck looking the same as they did on Xbone OG. A lot of early Xbone games never got an X Enhanced version anyway, but a lot did towards the end of the gen when Xbone OG has been struggling to play the games at all.

If they had made the Series S support X enhancements, I'd have bought a Series S day 1 after selling/trading in my Xbone X. As it stands now, I'm just gonna have to wait on a Series X. Doesn't make sense to pay more to play worse versions of games.

I don’t know how relevant this is to Xbox preorders but it might. I stopped by my local GameStop today and talked to them about Tuesday. In my state they normally wouldn’t open until noon but will be open at 11am est. They don’t know what allotment they’ll get. She did tell me they got 16 PS5s and 4 of the disc less ones. They don’t have as many people on their list for Xboxes as PS5s but I’m definitely going to make sure I’m up there at least an hour before.

Storage is the big problem to me. The other things aren't issues. I have friends that have an xbox to play Madden, NBA, and Call of Duty. They don't give a damn about power, etc. For $300 this is a guaranteed purchase for them.

We are a very specific customer. Most people don't think about a consoles power two years from now. Those customers are more price sensitive. They will buy the S.

Gamers like us will buy the X.

I fully expected there to be a power gap between the Series S and the Series X but what I didn't expect was for the Xbone X to outperform the Series S (in some aspects). I'm not sure exactly what the weak link in the Series S is but I think it was dumb to not support BC games at 4k (at least to the extent the Xbone X did).

$50 if I remember correctly. I’m hoping I’ll have a good chance of getting one. The woman I talked to is there a lot so it wasn’t just some fill in employee. She told me the other day I should be able to get on if I’m there when they open. I have no clue if she knows their projected allotment. Compared to Sony, Microsoft has seemed to have a better handle of being prepared for preorders and the launch. Now it’s just wait and see.
