For all the hype I thought it was something more than yet another multiplayer shooter. Ah well.
Guessing you're just being sharky but there is a large enough section of gaming that a new version of a AAA FPS is big news... and this is a new IP, meaning its newer than most. That's big news in an industry that's a bit gun shy on risk.

New indie gala is horrible.
I cannot even get the website to load... (loaded, finally. Not even going to try to place an order...)

I guess some of you have massive porn/music/torrent collections?
I'm more lazy and never delete things but while I could live on a smaller drive I'm not sure its really worth the few dollars saved... Also as others have pointed out games are getting bigger and with the release of the next gen of consoles they are going to get even bigger. (at least on avg.)

Add that and the fact that today's OS is always growing with patches and what not...

Yeah, not worth the hassle of trying to have a small HD. (Really, with sales its likely to find a quality HD bigger than a cheap smaller sized one.

Said it in other threads but SSDs are a bit overrated.  Especially when I only use sleep mode on my computer and it 'boots up' in about two seconds.  All things being equal, I'd take one over a normal HD... but they usually cost anywhere from double to triple the cost for about five seconds shaved off of load times.  As far as storage... I'll just let Steam store the games I'm not currently playing.  I don't really view it as hassle.  I only switch between two or three games at a time and finish them.  Once finished I rarely go back (online/multiplayer focused games excluded, of course).  In January I installed and finished Risen 2 and uninstalled it.  I doubt I will ever go back and play it again.

As far as cost I think I paid $60ish for the 500 GB WD Black I have now.  Sure it only would have been maybe $20-40 more for a 1 TB but... the space would be wasted.  I'm not even coming close to capping out my storage and doubt I ever will.  I apply marginal savings like that to areas where I actually benefit like the graphics card.

Streaming porn is all you need, bro.  N-e-ways, yeah, I just don't see the need to have every game in your Steam library 'at your fingertips.'  Worst comes to worst it takes me maybe 30ish min to download the largest of games.  And despite what kitty thinks I don't believe your HD has much bearing on how your games perform (other than transitions shrunk from three seconds to one and a half seconds).

I'm amused... your input to Mooby is pointless... you're talking to someone who built a gaming desktop and only opted for a 500GB spinning drive. Besides which he hates most games.

I keep most/many games installed so I can easily play what I want/something new without needing to wait hours for it to download. My 2TB Steam drive has less than 100 GB free (and I've been trying to reduce that... it's not good to keep drives too full.)

Also there is the very basic fact that larger capacity spinning drives has higher bandwidth read/writes (due to higher data density).
Yeah, but out of the Lost Planet trilogy installs, he still has a good 400 GB left for making angry gaming videos and memes and posting them on YouTube.

Part OCD, part practicality of being able to play whatever I want when I want to without having to install it first.
Yup, pretty much all that ^ . I believe I now have 98% of my Steam, Origin, and Uplay games installed. It just boils down to convenience, time, and individual preference. Personally, I have the space so I figure I might as well use it. Also, let's not forget there is value behind card idling ASAP on recently added titles before like spoderman. ;)

If anyone is thinking about going the SSD route I'd recommend getting a good one, because not all SSDs are equal in terms of the method used to access the storage memory chips. Stay away from the cheaper asynchronous SSD types as they are quite inferior to synchronous SSDs or even toggle types (a hybrid of the two methods). Sure they are cheap but the value just isn't there unless they are dirt cheap. Some of the benefits of synchronous over asynchronous are windows startup is up to 40% faster, gaming up to 60% faster, and file copying up to 70% faster to name a few.

I primarily use my 256GB sync. SSD for the OS, all programs, a few games, & editing software that takes advantage of faster access speeds. I don't think I could ever go back to using a HDD as my primary. The response times are just too good and convenient.

That's common... usually drives don't drop much below $60, so seeing two drive with the same price and same capacity in the sub $100 price range isn't uncommon.

For small drives you're best off rummaging up one of your old drives (or a friend's old drive).
True. I have a pair of old Barracuda drives that I currently use for storage as externals but I could always reuse them for that.

I wanted to get an SSD, but since I plan to triple boot my next computer between XP Pro, 7 Pro and a version of Linux, I'm not sure if the whole SSD trim whatever deal will work fine.

I've put about 8-9 hours into How to Survive's co-op (I'm currently playing it with indef)...etc.
I guess this means they fixed the bug I mentioned last week? The one about the game not giving mission rewards to both players? If so that is great since we really wanted to play it.

I've had problems finishing games ever since I started to have a backlog. Several of my favorite games sit unfinished at 75-90% done. At the same time, as I approach 500 games I feel more of an urge to at least boot up some of these titles to see if anything grabs me right away. So, setting aside the games in my permanent backlog, I like to have a lot of titles installed for dabbling in between rounds of Marvel Puzzle Quest, which is still really the only game I invest serious time in despite swearing it off two weeks ago. :(

30 minutes?! That's a pretty nice connection you have. I know my cable isn't the fastest, but it's usually fine for day-to-day use, including torrenting. But large Steam downloads will bring it to its knees and take an hour or more at peak bandwidth, making my internet painfully slow for anything else.

My first gaming PC is now complete. So now I can finally get through my backlog purchase games I couldn't previously play guilt-free to backlog.

think I'ma buy Assetto Corsa and Next Car Game now

Special Promotion for The Witcher and The Witcher 2. Both are 80% off, $1.99 and $3.99 respectively.
sweet deal for those that don't have it or don't want to wait for them to be bundled, but it sure would be funny if humble bundle put witcher 2 in the $15 tier as a fuck you.

It was yellow comic sans... I hate everyone's attempts at specific prophesy. If it was a weekly, I'd bet #1 would be in the $1 level and #2 in the $6 level... hence the sarcastic nature of my comment. I would ask MysterD to write a longer treatise on it, but...

You know what is the worst part? You will never be able to experience the game at its worse, how it was release, completely and utterly broken. It was a sight to behold.

Now its just a bad game :(
Have you tried Takedown: Red Sabre? it makes Revelations 2012 look like Bioshock Infinite.

It's because you only have 15 games installed. I have all my games installed...between Steam, GOG, Origin, Crapsule, Uplay, etc...it's over 400. Multiply the space those 15 are taking by about 25-30, and it's easy to see why you might need more than a 500 GB HD.

909 games installed on Steam, 46 games installed on Origin, 74 games installed on Desura, a gigabyte of music, have 5.25 TB of hdd space and still need to buy another hdd because I seriously doubt I'll go this whole year not buying any more games.

So, got my Titanfall beta key a couple days ago. Went to put it in, thought twice. Look on random gaming forums, and they're selling for $50+. Well shit. I hop on eBay, same thing. Short story, I decide that ignoring eBay's "NO SELLING BETA KEYS" policy and doing it anyways (like the thousand other people are) is worth the risk. Put it up for $50, it sells within 30 minutes. Look up past sales, and the first ones sold for $100. Seriously, what the fuck?

So while I've been trying to wrap my head around why people would spend as much as a full game costs (or more) for a beta that is only going to be around for a few weeks, only has 2 maps, and a pitiful amount of guns and general other content that will be in the full version, the developers say "Hey, we're just gonna open up the beta." I wasn't sure whether to laugh my ass off, or feel bad for all the people (like the guy who bought my key) that bought the "closed" beta key, only to have it be rendered totally pointless 24 hours or so later.

I guess it just goes to show either how hyped this game is, or how stupid people are. I'm leaning towards the latter one.

Big fucking long Titanfall review:

Anyways, I grabbed an Xbox One two days ago and have just been playing Titanfall on it (don't feel like clearing God knows how much space on my PC to install a temporary beta). I'm really enjoying it. As people have said and will continue to say, it's basically CoD with parkour and mechs. Both of those things are pretty badass, so that's not really a bad thing.

You're still going to get killed in the blink of an eye and get frustrated. You're still going to fill a guy with bullets while he just runs at you and hits you with a OHKO jump-kick (which is equal parts badass, hilarious, and ridiculous, and is just CoD's knife with a different animation and name). You're still going to run into asshats who insist on hiding in corners, going back to same camping spot, etc. That aside though, it's not a CoD clone and the differences turn the similarities upside down.

First, the movement is wild. You jump much higher than you do in CoD, and you can actually hit a ledge and climb up onto it all in one smooth motion. This exists in CoD games too, but it's always been a fucking joke. Then you've got a boost pack that allows you a double jump midair. The enhanced standard jump and boost give you a lot of freedom to go wherever the fuck you want, quickly. Add sprint onto those and you can clear pretty damn big gaps (jumping between buildings, for example), relatively speaking. All of this movement means that--even though you still have very low health and can die quickly like in CoD--escape is a feasible option in tons of situations, and they make you much more elusive even if you can't escape. In CoD, you're relatively slow and grounded unless you're using Lightweight+Marathon to give you that quickness and long sprint times. Having those perks can really help you stay elusive, make knives less useful for people going after you, etc. EVERYONE in Titfall has that speed, plus verticality, and that's what not only makes the CoD random instadeaths not as big of a deal. but also makes jump-kicking not as useful as the knife is in CoD, unless you're boxed up in a small area.

Now for the camping and whatnot, the titans are what pretty much turn that upside down. Gone are the days where you can just find a good spot and pick people off till they get keen to your strategy, before moving on, rinse and repeat. Everyone is going to get a couple Titans a game (more if they play very well), and simply put, you can't camp and kill a titan. The titans really make this game, and combat between them is pretty impressive for what's really just an FPS. They're slower, they can't jump, their "quickness" comes from 2 boost charges that give you quick thrusts in whatever direction you like. They can soak up quite a few hits, and have "Vortex Shields", which is basically a rechargeable magnetic shield that stops all the bullets and rockets that come at you, then FIRES them back where you're aiming once you drop your shield. This makes battles between titans pretty fucking intense, guessing when your opponent is going to let loose on you, or whether he's going to put up his own shield, charge you for unblockable melee attacks, etc. Snagging a bunch of projectiles in your shield (especially when you have multiple enemies shooting at you), can utterly turn the tide of the battle, since it means zero damage to you and possibly a huge chunk of damage to your opponent.

All these titans running around means that at many points of the game, all the focus is on them. Have fun sitting in your hole and hoping someone walks by for you to ambush (which is less likely, since the maps are pretty large, since they need to accommodate big ol' titans), because all the action will be going on elsewhere and your CoD camping strategy has become outdated and flimsy. Honestly, the game is impressive because of how seamlessly it integrates vehicular and on-foot combat into a system where the "vehicle" can be a powerhouse or hopelessly doomed depending on the situation. There's a lot of balance going on there. You can parkour up to a rooftop and rain down rockets from afoot at a titan below, and totally light him up if you're careful about it (especially if he's busy with another titan)... or he can look up, see you, and turn you to a red smudge on the concrete. I've been in a titan and utterly dominated, and I've also gotten in one, jumped in to battle, and gotten decimated. It's a great system.

In the end, it's just CoD in a wilder package with so many changes that it honestly has transformed it into something entirely new and exciting. There's so much to the game and so much finesse to the movement system combined with combat and titan warfare that it will be a much more diverse, easy to learn/impossible to master system than CoD ever could have been. In one match I hopped on a friendly titan's back, nestled up and mounted on the back of his shoulder (great cover) while I assisted him by firing rockets at the titans he engaged. In another I stuck to cover, rooftops, and made heavy use of my cloaking ability coupled with a "smart" pistol that can lock onto a short range target in your sights, firing homing bullets to pull off stealth kills. For there being a pitiful amount of guns, made modes, perks, etc in this beta, there's a fucking lot of depth to this game.

TL;DR, even if you hate CoD, you could fall in love with Titanfall. It's fresh, and it's going to be hard not buying it at launch (especially considering I made $50 off of the pointless beta key).

Ha, you got lucky.

Apparently EA is going to start giving beta keys out for free today.

Electric smoke is where it's at...until people finally realize to jump off your titan and scram. I've gotten a couple double kills just popping off that smoke. Vortex Shield is meh, but everybody uses it.

Giving out? They switched Xbox One to open beta over a day ago, and I'm pretty sure they're making PC open beta soon (if it isn't already).

if I remember correctly the beta for Gears 3 went for an insane amount... but I don't think it got anywhere near 50. (And it at least had exclusive weapon and character skins, and it came out like 6 months early and was a true beta. Hell, they even rebuilt one of the maps because of feedback. It was also a month long.)

I know it sounds like a stupid hangup but the lack of a single player portion just really bugs me... I know its stupid, when I played allot of CoD in the past I rarely did more than a single run through of the campaign while racking up allot of hours in MP... So, yeah, it shouldn't bug me but it does.

It's a little disappointing, but considering MW2 is the only CoD I played through the story of, and even that became a massive fucking chore? I don't know, these are multiplayer games, pure and simple. The story always feels tacked on in warfare FPSs.

In fact, the way Respawn is handling the "story" sounds about right to me: http://venturebeat.com/2014/02/14/titanfall-multiplayer-storytelling/

“There’s a mode in the game that’s called campaign multiplayer where you play as both sides. You are shown the story of each one.

“You are going to have characters that are going to be with you for the entire narrative. Each map has a different mission which tells a different part of the story. There are introductions and outros that show you escape and characters that are going to give you context and narrative throughout the entire thing as well.”

And this doesn't have much to do with the story bit above, but one of the dudes said this:

"We make these single-player missions that take up all the focus of the studio, that take a huge team six months to make, and players run through it in 8 minutes," he said. "And how many people finish the single-player game? It's a small percentage. It's like, everyone plays through the first level, but 5 percent of people finish the game. Really, you split the team. They're two different games. They're balanced differently, they're scoped differently. But people spend hundreds of hours in the multiplayer experience versus 'as little time as possible rushing to the end' [in single-player]. So why do all the resources go there? To us it made sense to put it here. Now everybody sees all those resources, and multiplayer is better. For us it made sense."

For games like this, it's hard not to agree. These aren't story based games like Bioshock, Halo, etc.

Just read the arcade version of Ultra Street Fighter 4 will run on Taito Type X3 (i7 and GTX 560Ti) so it'll finally look as good as the PC version. I remember when arcade machines were years ahead of anything you could get at home. Now they're only a little better than what I have on my computer because I'm cheap.

I suppose I do agree but it's one of the things that turns me off the most about modern FPS games. The last one of these things I played through (Battlefield Bad Company 2), unlike most other reviewers, I thought the campaign felt like a series of set pieces strung together with bits of dialogue among characters that were neither particularly fleshed-out nor particularly likeable. My nephew loves getting online and mixing it up with a bunch of random strangers but that's not generally my idea of fun. These days when I see a dev is specifically not including multiplayer in a AAA game, I cheer a little inside.

I'll say it, I don't really care for Titanfall. I tried the tutorial because FREE but after that I quit. I don't like military shooters and lack of a single player campaign pretty much kills it for me because people suck and I don't want to play with people unless it's Revelations 2012.

Or to put more clearly because Idiotekque was getting all someone is wrong on the internet on my ass in IM earlier for saying I didn't like Titanfall after playing the tutorial, if a game is just shooting combat with other people, I'm not interested.

I'm sure it will sell a gazillion copies and make EA even more Scrooge McDuck rich than they already are but I can haughtily (hipstery?) say that it's exactly the type of game that will appeal to the lowest common denominator unwashed masses who need little substance to their games and thus not for me.

That's not bad, out in May for $20. Maybe it'll be $5 in the Summer sale.

Summer Sale 2014 Preview: Early access games at 15% off. No other deals.

He's the paradigm of their target audience. This is just another CoD, BF, etc. clone but with robots. Tons of people love those games but I find them utterly boring.

Also here's some crap: 0KD4V-HFKN9-JZLKR and costumes for the crap 0JL5P-YT3GM-CEIVP and music from the crap 0KYEH-DBTGF-YCL0C

Thanks! Grabbed the first code.

Can anyone recommend Savant: Ascent?

I'm eyeing that but I think it's already been in a bundle and will probably be in a Groupees or IG before too long.  Everyone should grab Alpha Brotocol, though.

You're right. Sometimes I forget he's a 20 year old kid. ;)

And I agree on these games being boring. I mean for me if they sort of Mass Effect'ed it up with a campaign and a story but then had you pilot robots for the combat portion I'd be on bored board (Freudian slip).

Or if we could get a good modern PC game for Gundam or Macross or some sort of robot space opera like that I'd be interested too, though I know you are allergic to Anime Mooby.

Just wait and see.
Yeah EA has been kind of shit with their deals lately on the non-moldy stuff and something uber popular like this you know they are bound to milk it for everything they've got. The PC version they won't even have to give Valve or Microsoft or Sony or anyone a cut either.
