Shame... I really loved the voiceovers in Civ 4.

Ironically, I didn't know he directed Three men and a baby... that movie makes me laugh like it's 1989.  :p

I doubt they will have a complete edition, seeing as how they are still coming out with DLC (the newest one came out yesterday). Even CK2, which came out 3 years ago, is still getting new DLC. Paradox usually supports their games for a long time, with both free and paid updates. Also the DLC included in the extreme edition is mostly cosmetic IIRC. The DLCs that actually add content are Res Republica (for republics), Wealth of Nations (for trader nations), Conquest of Paradise (for colonizers/colonies), Art of War (the only must-have DLC) and the new one, El Dorado (for Incan/Mayan nations). Everything else is music/cosmetic stuff.

Yeah, I just spent $16 yesterday on Nuuvem buying the two newest DLCs. Already have 200 hours played and I can see myself play another 200 or more, easily, so it was totally worth it.
Is EUIV any easier to get into than any of the other Paradox grand strategy titles? i.e., if I buy it, is there a chance in hell I'll ever play it?

I have thousands of hours in Civ, SMAC, and GalCiv and I have a hard time getting into Paradox grand strategy titles. I've been told my problem is that I try to grok the meta-game too much, and want to min-max right from the start, instead of just playing and letting shit happen for a bunch of games.

Yes, EU4 is the easiest to get into and that's what I started with. I actually haven't played any of the others, although I'm interested in CK2 now. There's a free weekend going on right now, so you can give it a shot. Make sure to play the tutorial, if its still confusing try watching some Let's Plays. Its a little hard to learn at first but once you've got the basics down, you can play it like a rogue-like - start a game, try stuff out, learn what works and what doesn't, then you can apply what you learned in the next game and (hopefully) do better.

I think part of the reason I like it so much is because I'm a huge history nerd, but it is also a very good strategy game all on it's own. Be warned though, if you get hooked, it'll take up all your time, usually when I start a game I'll end up playing at least 5-6 hours straight, usually more. And I do that for a couple days in a row before I actually "finish" a game. I think I spent the first ~120 hours playing 3-4 games as Japan before I felt I was satisfied and moved onto Cherokee where I probably spent another 60 or so hours trying to get the "No Trail of Tears" achievement. I must've spent the rest playing countries like Russia or Portugal, but yeah, seeing as how I've only played 3-4 nations, and I've already logged 200 hours... I think if I had to choose one game to take with me on a deserted island, this would be it. Endless replay-ability, constantly being updated, and there's always new stuff you can learn about the game... a gamer's wet dream.

I thought CK2 is the easiest to get into.. then EU series.. then HOI and lastly, Victoria

I dunno. Again, never played any other Paradox strategy games other than EU4 so far. I based my decisions off this.
CK2 is easiest. It's just family relation mostly. EU4 has that and a bit more complexity on top.

Victoria is the pain in the a$$ btw.

HIghly recommend Distant World. It's the flawless, unsung, underappreciated gem on this generation. It's rarely on sale, VERY EXPENSIVE and I was tempted to get it via Russian discount prior the region lock

I definitely now regret not picking up DW when it was on sale and could still get the russian discount.  I think it was 8-12$ from them  :wall:

Eh, EU4 doesn't really have any family relations, other than royal marriages, which are only available to certain nations and have pretty limited use. The only reason to have a royal marriage is to secure alliances, and I guess you could get lucky and get a personal union but AFAIK that only happens in Europe anyway, which I don't really like to play that much. Like the picture says, CK2 is about managing a dynasty, EU4 is about managing a country. IMHO managing a country is infinitely more interesting.

Why oh why have I put off playing Mirror's Edge for so long.

..well I know why.. huge backlog and a vague notion that it might give me motion sickness because I heard someone say it did at some point.

Finished Murdered Soul Suspect yesterday (6 or 7/10) and wanted something completely different.

Scrolled through the library, saw it and said - eh I'll give it a shot.  The game grabbed me during the tutorial and by the end of the first mission I was hooked.

Haven't finished it yet, going to go back and play it some more right now.

This has been a public service announcement mysteriously delayed since 2008!

I assume this is Steam's way of announcing Greenlight is finally dead and anything and everything gets in now?

So, Capcom made the performance worse in the new patch for RE Revelations 2 (around 20+ fps less than I was getting before, game ran at a constant 60 fps pre-patch). Meanwhile, some random dude on the internet implemented a local co-op mod, something that Capcom refused to do at launch.

Good job, Capcom!

Well, Microcenter is fuck ing awesome.  Went in with a $500 budget, spent $640.

Was planning on just grabbing a processor & motherboard.  Ended up with those, plus ram chips, SSD, cooler, and OS.  Years of purchasing game bundles apparently has made me predisposed to buying more things at once when the Minor Discount Carrot is dangled in front of my face.  Sweet, delicious, cost effective impulse carrots!  During the 2 hour drive home I realized, by cannibalizing some parts off my previous build, all I was missing was somewhere in which to shove all this junk.  Bought a used tower off the local parts guy for $15, looked good in the store, looks less good on my table surrounded by a bunch of parts boxes.  Tomorrow will be devoted to half-assed engineering, picking up dropped screws, zip tying, button pressing and finger crossing.  Then i'll order a new case on Sunday.

Their staff should've picked something else - meh.
Got Contrast a couple weeks back, and Psychonauts this week after the crafting Gods were kind to me, rewarding my badge crafting efforts with a 75% Off Coupon.

I'm glad I saw this though. Saw that Blades of Time will be on sale this week at some point. I can get behind that.

Fans of The Operative: No One Lives Forever and NOLF2: A Spy in H.A.R.M's Way ... shed a tear. It was so close to being revived and getting a full port to Steam, courtesy of necro-divers, Night Dive Studios. Alas, it's lost in a three-way tug-of-war among disinterested mega-publishers.

The Sad Story Behind a Dead PC Game That Can't Come Back.
should have been on GoG and should have had a Remastered done..

For shame!

That really sucks, those were some fun games. Still got the discs buried somewhere. Maybe I'll even dig them up one day to take a selfie.

It sucks we won't get remastered versions, but shit, this is what torrents are for.

Thanks all for the input on grand strategy games. I wishlisted Distant Worlds and I'll consider picking up EU4 when the price is right. In the meantime, CK2 which I do actually own seems a little less scary. Some day, I hope. I really want to play the Game of Thrones mod.

Why oh why have I put off playing Mirror's Edge for so long.
I tried to pick up ME again a couple months back and I did find it intriguing enough to get a couple levels into it, but if I remember correctly at that point motion sickness made me put it down again. And I could never get the FOV hack to work, so I abandoned it. I was getting into it and would have liked to play more, but for me first person is always awkward and unintuitive compared to third person, and it usually ends up being not worth the effort. Man, I don't know when's the last time I put any significant time into an FPS.

Beyond the WTF-factor, how does something like this actually become an IGF finalist? That's a whole other level of WTF.

You mean these?

Yet again I wish to state that I have never posted any pics of naked or topless women. In any/all pics I posted the women were clothed or at least did not have exposed nipples. So where is the uproar over this post?

Protecting the ownership rights of people and companies is obviously a very important thing.  This makes sense when they could be hurt financially or if that properties' reputation could be damaged in some way.

When a company doesn't care one bit about a past project and doesn't even know where the heck the paperwork is on it, perhaps they should just butt out and let somebody else bring it back to life.

At the very least, they could have ok'd an updated version of the original that made it work with modern systems and disallowed them from making any new follow-up products related to the franchise.

warreni should be more wary of letting his mom's dentist's ex girlfriend's florist's comcast technician's best friend's dad's church organist's daughter post on his cag account

Putting in my 2 cent here, I actually feel EU series is the easiest of the paradox games. You'll just need to keep an eye on the cascading alliances chain when picking a war target and deal with the retarded rebels/aggressive expansion etc. mechanics the devs repeatedly put in to hamstring your map-painting. The combat itself is a very simplistic system where you mainly push a bigger stack over another (think Risk).

CK2 is about managing your vassals, family members and also actually has vastly different unit types and you can have fun managing them with the flanking/combat events etc. You can also play it Games of Throne-style and just plot to push your children onto thrones without actual combat at all.

Victoria is about managing the POP units (population) and industralization. This is IMHO the best series of the paradox games.

With regards to the free weekend of EU4, this is actually a really bad time to try it out as they just came out with a new expansion which introduced new bugs and broke quite a few other things. And of course yet again, paradox has in recent patches/expansions decide to hamstring the "fun" factor in all their games (most esp. EU4) in the name of "closing exploits" and "multiplayer balance" in what are mainly single-player games. But hey, free to try!

That being said, I'll advise against picking up any of Paradox games until they start working on the next iteration of a series and just picking up the real "Complete" previous version on the cheap then (ie. all the repeatedly bundled HOI3 now that they're on HOI4) As shown in EU4, they've shown to be too prone to coming up with yet another buggy expansion/DLCs over and over with no real attempt to fix previous bugs until the next expansion (or not even then).

Oh and Distant Worlds is great. It's argubly the best 4X space game out there atm with a decent AI/automation system to boot. Too bad it didn't receive as much publicity as other games in the genre (i.e the flawed CIV5/Beyond Earth etc...) I blame this mainly on their publisher Matrixgames/Slitherine and their foolish marketing/pricing.. (google them for their history..)

What's so wrong with those games? I've heard good things about all 3 of them, and aside from Psychonauts, the other 2 are reasonably priced. I think those are some of the better "picks" they've done.
I have Psychonauts from Retail, Steam, and DRM-FREE from Humble Bundle.

I also have Another World: 20th Ed from GOG.

Don't have Contrast - and I think I can wait on that one.

Figures that companies like Fox, Acitvision, and Warner Bros would get in the way of a nice re-release for those gamers who actually unfortunately missed those classics + those gamers who don't feel like digging the damn discs out.

Really sucks that none of these companies could hammer out some kind of deal w/ Night Dive that'd work for them all + especially for the consumers.

This sucks big time.

I feel the troll in this post, but I'll answer anyway. Firstly, warreni posted behind a spoiler first off and while sarcastically posted and technically not sale related, it was still game related. His post was not gratuitously lewd for the sole sake of being gratuitously lewd. Secondly, it was a single image and not a train of several. Thirdly, it's a societal (at least in the US) thing in that the tolerance of said artwork is more tolerated than that of images of overly buxom (real or animated) gravity defying bouncing chest lumps.

Like I've said before, I don't have an issue with you or your posts (usually), but I want to try and keep this thread just a wee bit cleaner from a mod perspective (meaning we police ourselves).

I count 24 images. Just because they are mashed together into a collage doesn't mean it isn't multiple pics. As far as not being gratuiously lewd I disagree. A woman fully naked with her crotch spread open and touching herself is far more lewd than anything I've posted. It shouldn't matter what style of art it is. A woman nakedly masterbating is more lewd and objectionable than a fully clothed woman jumping about a little. As far as being spoilered I know for a fact that doesn't matter because when I was spoilering pics I was still being modded and/or nagged for it.

Besides that those images were taken from the game The Witcher which wasn't the topic at hand. The topic at hand was Steam trading cards. As far as I've seen content such as this would not make it into any Steam games trading card content. The images in question were in fact placed in the game The Witcher as a way to objectify women. So how is this different again? Oh yeah it's markedly worse.

Are we doing Gamergate again?
