About a month after Destiny was released, I quit the game. I played about 150 hours. I had vacation from work for the month of September and the wife and I decided to save money, so I devoted my time to Destiny and training a bit harder at the gym.
Well after 150 hours I was more than burnt out. I hated Destiny. I told many people not to buy it. My friends said, "But you got 150 hours out of it... it couldn't be that bad." I explained to them that for the content that was there, it was not worth the time I put in and wanted the time back. The game played off of addictive tendencies and was largely uninspired. For every fun experience, there was 10 painful questions of design choices. I realized I was only having a good time, because I had a good group of people to play with. Social ties do not make a game great, it just shows friendship is wonderful or something like that.
I never really was burned by Destiny outside of time spent. I bought the game for $47.99 with Best Buy GCU and received a $10 reward cert as well. Effectively making the game about $40. I traded the game in a month later for $35. Good thing I never found a Ghost Edition that I tried so hard to hunt down.
Further, the truly inspired content was only really accessible when I had a plethora of free time. The VoG was great, I had some really amazing gaming sessions. However, it was broken in many places and the focus on grinding was too great. Some of the miracles that occurred during hard mode were too amazing to replicate. But it was fleeting, and the focus on grinding/fighting tedious bosses over and over and trying to find a decent time weighed down. Even the most fun part of the game became a slog.
Then, having a warlock at 30, and the other characters in the ballpark of 30, I began to deal with the worst part of the game. Resource farming. My wife walked in and asked me, "What... are you doing? This looks so stupid." I replied, "I'm farming relic iron..." Then realized how stupid the system of walking in a large circle hitting resource points and mashing square to pick them up was belligerently stupid and a complete waste of time. 4 hours later I had enough to upgrade my armor and weapons. I then quit Destiny.
Here I am, coming back to the game. Besides a good friend asking me to come back, I have to say it's because of the games improvements and improvements to come. There is a lot for me to catch up on. I'd like to still get Fatebringer, the only VoG weapon that alluded me. I have both expansions worth of things to do. The deal is very solid on PSN. $80 nets you the digital collector's edition of the Taken King and the original game+expansion pass. It also lets you play the older content while you wait for The Taken King.
I see a lot of veterans of the game are upset by the price point. Really, at Best Buy, you can get the Taken King physical release which comes with everything released so far with Gamers Club Unlocked for $47.99. For some reason, the Taken King digital release is $40 alone, which makes absolutely no sense. I was waiting for Destiny to improve AND have a solid buy in point to return to the game, and I have. The veterans WILL be outweighed by new or returning old blood and Bungie knows this. It is a shame, but honestly it happens with nearly every game.
This is an example since today is AK's release, people all rush to buy the Arkham games, but they are $5 with all DLC a year later. It's just not as in your face since it's not an MMO type game.
Let me not get side tracked on that note of value for the vets since that's been discussed everywhere.
I think I'm glad to be back, it's going to take me a bit to see if I regret it. I really need to experience the content and updates I've missed out on the last several months. This is a point of no return though, a digital game is always a risk and I almost never take the plunge. I've been playing the Destiny demo on and off with my level 30 which is actually pretty cool.
See you online. I'll be trying to get my Warlock to 34 as fast as possible, then on to my Titan and Hunter.
Take care Guardians. If you see a VoG Warlock with Sunbreakers and blacksmith shader in PvP it just may be me.
P.S. My first exotic was the Ice Breaker the second day the game was out. That was exciting.
