Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Still....I wonder....maybe Xseed is working on Cold Steel III right now. After all, NIS had to be working parallel alongside Falcom and (Falcom president) mentioned an English release was being worked on sooooooo....

But nevertheless...

Can't wait for Ys VIII. And PC too!

I like the co-op because it gives the game another layer, but it really does need to be balanced better. Bosses are complete cakewalks, and not even yokai stand a chance when there's two active threats wailing on them. The limitations on matchmaking don't make this any better. Just because you're locking people out doesn't make it any harder, just more annoying.
I wouldn't say they are complete cakewalks, especially with the bosses and their aoe. So you can't just wail on them and stun lock them like normal enemies. But I agree, the limitations after the coop change was stupid. The way it works now actually makes it easier even though they claim it was to make it harder. Having one person that already finished it helping the other makes no sense. I summon someone and that person basically can carry me and shows me most of the secrets in the level. Whereas going in blind with 2 people (think dark/demon souls) was harder since no one knows the level and we can actually explore together.

Having to have both players beating the level already just to play together privately doesn't help either. It also doesn't affect anyone unlike the souls games. They had invaders. Nioh doesn't, so if a person likes a challenge and plays the way the devs wanted them to, then they just don't have to summon for help. Easy as that. They should have either removed coop, or kept it like the demo. As much praise as it is getting, even after playing many hours, I wouldn't have purchased the game unless it got cheap if it wasn't for coop. It's just not that great for me as a single player experience. Just like the souls games, without the coop, I wouldn't have purchased at release.

And for the record, I'm a coop whore, so I will buy any game, good or bad that has coop if my friends play. And I know others who are also like me, so all the "it was meant for single player" or "git gud" doesn't apply here since I play coop games to have fun with friends. Coop to me is like going to the movies or bowling or something. Those activities are technically meant for a single person, but most people don't do those alone.

I need to finish up Danganronpa 2....need to be ready for September for sure.

I'm finally done with side missions on chapter 2 so i'm moving on with the story in Yakuza 0. Will come back and raise friendship with people in game. Game is pretty fun and the more I play the more I notice I just love Yakuza games. Can't wait to play as Majima and do more side missions. These get pretty fun after 1 or 2 I didn't like much. Battle system is great though and I can't wait till I keep upgrading the systems and see Majima's fighting styles. Good stuff and easily my favorite game so far this year. Course I've likely only played Da Capo 3, maybe 1 or 2 other short VNs, and a million F2P games.

Sorry to unplease you if you didn't click the link, but it's May not March.
I saw it get announced on twitter as May 23rd which is sooner than I expected, somewhere after Arms and Before Splatoon 2 time window.

Which is very good, keeps a steady flow of games coming early.

I have it on PS4 already so not that excited, but might pick it up anyway.

I'm not picking it up at all.  Sick of nisa and their ports and crap.  Especially when they said they wern't going to do enhanced versions anymore after 4.  Liars deserve no money from me.

has there been any word on River City Melee getting a stateside release, been debating grabbing the asian version on preorder

With XSeed not localizing both Tokyo Xanadu and Ys VIII, I have to wonder exactly what caused that. Though I could see them letting another company work on Tokyo Xanadu pretty easily, but not so much Ys VIII. Maybe it has something to do with PC porting capabilities, which XSeed doesn't have. They've definitely put a lot of work in making Ys popular in the west, so it's a little surprising. (I know it was a Falcom decision and XSeed fought for Ys VIII)

Glad to get Ys VIII on PC, but I would've preferred it to be XSeed if at all possible. I hear the game has a lot more text than past games that it helps pad out the games length quite a bit. I feel XSeed does a much better job at translating (and dubbing) than NISA does in my opinion. Here's hoping the port doesn't suck because the game is much more reliant on gameplay unlike other RPGs.

Here's the Steam Page for Ys VIII in case anybody wanted to wishlist it.

For those who enjoyed Trails of Cold Steel, Sean Chiplock, the voice of the MC Rean did an AMA on Reddit over at the /r/JRPG subreddit in case you want to check it out (Can't guarantee everything is spoiler tagged in it):

https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/5uuada/hey_jrpg_im_the_voice_of_rean_schwarzer_in_trails/

He also did a couple more random Rean voices for various random made up lines recently on his blog again (Cold Steel 1 Spoilers):

Hmmm, I was just thinking the other day that a Tracer Nendo wouldn't do it for me, and I would much prefer a Mercy one. Nice to know I have some kind of reality-altering special power. Hopefully Gamestop gets these since they have been going for Nendos and Figmas lately and this is a franchise they support a lot.

Also, it's Marie Rose, not Mary Rose. Normally I wouldn't care and am not a silly spelling sorcerer, but that is my Waifu you are talking about.

Honestly i don't recognize about 2/3 of these characters. I think i'm not the target audience for most of the figures coming out now.

Ys Origin it the big hitter this week in my opinion with Berserk next up. Though I'm sure some people will see it the other way around. Outside of that, a bunch of non-asian releases that fit the niche genres of this thread more than their development origins. I know Hollow Knight has been a little hyped up recently, especially since it was included in this months Monthly Humble Bundle pack.

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all on PC/Steam:
- Princess Maker Refine (Simulation / RPG)
- the 9th day (Visual Novel / Not English)
- Dimension Drive (SHMUP)
- When Our Journey Ends (Visual Novel)

That higher up guy who keeps greenlighting Taro's games must really have a high seat on the Square Enix council.

Not sure how he did it, but we're actually getting a non PAK figure of 2B by FLARE. Makes me really glad I didn't get the Black Box now.

How is the quality of Flare's work? I've never owned any of theirs before.

I think I added only 3 or 4 figures from Wonfes to my wishlist. I think the anime I watch doesn't really get figures haha. Course those Overwatch nendos will be mine. I don't generally watch idol anime and rarely watch slice of life and moe anime. Usually just romance ones and some of the romantic comedies as well and other comedies and some action anime as well. The Sanei Heroine figures are nice though....Megumi.... =P~

I don't even like that series that much, but I do own Utaha and Eriri with GSC's Megumi pre-ordered. The designs are just so nice on those.
Remember the life size Megumi figurine from last year?

>tfw someone bought it just to resell it.

Bring Home Your Life-Size Saekano Girlfriend for 1.98 Million Yen

Bonus: Ai Kayano and Kiyono Yasuno holding their characters figurines from a recent event.

Well, all that's left to announce is Sen/Cold Steel III. And if my gut is right, I'm pretty sure we know who's doing that one.

And maybe I'm too new to the Falcom scene, but....I just saw the trailer NISA put up on Steam. Is that one of the first times Kondo-san has addressed the international market personally like that?

He's talked a lot about the west, particularly the last couple years. However no, I don't believe he's addressed the west directly like in that trailer. Didn't even realize that was like that as I saw no reason to watch a trailer for a game I already knew I was going to buy.

Falcom has probably realized more recently that the PC scene outside of Japan for Japanese games is decently big and growing at a rather surprising rate lately. He probably wants to capitalize on it as much as possible as Falcom, while not a tiny studio, isn't really a big studio either and is very in need of more income. Pretty sure I've read that they were in dire straights a few times in the last decade. They're still not well off either.

If someone other than XSeed started being the ones to localize the Trails series, I'd probably go into shock. It's too bad we never got a proper localization of the Ghargov trilogy even though it's prior to the trails series.

While on one had I'm a bit eeeeeehhh on NISA having Ys VIII, I'm also glad Falcom wants their stuff released internationally - and from what I can tell, wants to bridge the gap between Japan and international release times. Xseed was working on a ton of games and just finished Story of Seasons and Fate Extella, and other stuff. Heck, I just bought Fate and Shantae on lightning deals from Amazon just so they get money - or sales numbers. Because...let's face it, I'll probably never get to those without severe peer pressure.

And yeah I'm with you on that...if Xseed does NOT get Sen III I'll be like

I will say that no company can be on the same level as alter. They're crazy when it comes to little details.
I don't know for sure about all the little details, but from figures I've owned, I would say that GSC (themselves, not all of the companies they distribute) and Max Factory are as good as Alter. In the past few years, I would say GSC's artistry has surpassed that of Alter's, but that's obviously personal preference.

Agreed. Max Factory definitely puts out some very high quality figures. While Alter is consistently high quality, other companies definitely can and have matched them.

I think the problem with Alter isn't their quality, but their license choices. Rarely in past 5-6 maybe more years have I even been wish listing their stuff anymore just because I don't know or care about the characters. They do some rarely licensed stuff too of course, but just not interested in most of it. I love Max Factory myself (plus they do a lot of Mikus) and GSC usually does good stuff too. I also am a fan of Orchid Seed, although they are extremely slow and put out very little. I collected the Seven Sins (never again....no Virtues get away!). Excellent figures, but extremely pricey too. And that was in a better figure market.

My problem with Alter is their prices.

I guess figure prices in general though are starting to get out of control.
