Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

My Hero Academia is getting a Season 4. Awesome!
at this point it seems like a fairly safe bet that MHA is going the Major route.

aka a 24-26 episode season every year which adapts around 2 chapters per episode and ultimately means that it should have very little filler outside of the occasional episode to promote a movie.

So we're loosing Overlord but getting slime. I enjoyed the first episode, I'll most likely stick with it. The first episode sets up a lot of interesting things.

I may have to revisit it, I got bored halfway through...

The first episode is all character/world building. No action and not many characters. I say watch i till the end. I think it will be really fun and I have high hopes for it. Defiantly lays the groundwork for one of the better isekai I've seen recently. At least the main character is an adult instead of a nerdy child shut-in.

Reported for not being about officer misconduct.

I love Megalo Box. It has 80s pacing and aesthetic and doesn't drag things out. I recommend it.

Futuristic underdog boxing show, but with more action than Rocky.

Tokyo Ghoul RE: continuation is another bizarre, disjointed poop storm. I am at a loss as to why they didn't have better explanations around wtf happened between the prior series and current ones. It's just a cluster. Oh well. This series had potential, but is continually flushed down the toilet.

Main reason why I stopped after the first season. The entire focus shifted and it was a little confusing. And I really wasn't that invested in it to begin with.

From what I've read that's supposed to be a "tip of the iceberg" type situation with Goblin Slayer. However, I have no frame of reference myself.
Violence is fine. People talk about comparing it to Claymore, which would be ok if there wasn't monster rape involved too. It feels like a hentai at this point. So by tip of the iceberg, are you talking about the violence or more rape? Cuz if it's the latter, I will just spare myself and not watch it further.

I'm not sure which it is because a lot of them were in vague terms that were more inside jokes/comments for people that know the source. Things like "You think that's bad? Hoo boy, will you be surprised."

I'm at work so I'm also limited on my ability to research on my phone :D

Really? I heard the opposite. That it doesn't get that "edgy" again. But like you it's just what I heard, no flippin clue if what I'm saying is true.

As for the show I'm on the fence. The scene in question did make me feel uneasy, but despite that I don't think it was that good. However I'll give it another episode or 2.

As I was adding stuff to my CR queue, I saw that they added Shiyan Pin Jiating from awhile back as Frankenstein Family. I'll have to check that out eventually, but for now I have much better shows to get caught up on.

One of those shows is Overlord and I have a general comment I can say freely and then an additional one in an episode 13 spoiler.

So I realize that an anime can't cover every minor detail in translating a story, but they have to be leaving out giant chunks of stuff in Overlord. I think it hurts the anime as a whole, because it makes it less stand-alone than it should be.

For example, whatever happened to the giant white dragon and the girl with the black/white hair? I'm sure they're important, but without researching the source they're just two interesting characters we don't see again for two full seasons. The spoiler is another example, but it spoils the ending to 13 so don't read it otherwise.
Also there's the end of 13. I know that Momon was Pandora's Actor, but I didn't see any visual clues other than Albedo saying "To have to hear that from him (of all people)". This however could have just as easily been interpreted as her disappointment in having to hear it from the skeleton she loves as part of the play.
I just feel like the show takes for granted that everyone watching it has already read the source material.

I'm about 6 episode into Frankenstein Family. It's cute and I like it. However half the show is the anime, the other half a variety show talking about the production, questions for the talent, things like that. I don't watch those parts and only in it for the actual anime.

I would presume that those characters will feature more prominently in future seasons (if we get more anime) as counterpoints to Ainz. I think showing them illustrates: 1) there are people out there who are related to players that have similarly been transported from Yggdrasil to this world, deepening the plot and letting you know there's more to the world and 2) that these people are strong and will understand who/what Ainz is and will either confront him or try to negotiate with him. Either way, to me it was a foreshadowing that he's not going to be able to just steam roll everyone.

For episode 13, I presume the person she's talking to is PA and the real deal is next to her. One of those fun mysteries.

After doing a bit more research on GobSlayer, it sounds like we can expect 3 or 4 more scenes of onscreen sexual violence. There's another thing I saw from a manga page that I'll put in a spoiler. That way those on the fence can read it and those that know they'll keep watching it won't be spoiled, I guess?
Anyway, there's a page covering the goblin tactic of using meat shields. That term has been around forever, but here it literally means tying nude women to tower shields as a front line defense to avoid arrows.
I watched episode one, and although it doesn't seem any worse than Berserk content wise, it's certainly no Berserk story wise. I may give it an episode or two before it falls of the list.

....dear lord. Might as well call it violent hentai. I watched episode 2, which I thought had a little more substance to it. It sounds like I shouldn't expect substance from this show though. Thanks for researching.

LOL. Violent hentai. Goblin Slayer is nowhere near that. Berserk is leagues more grimdark / dark fantasy than Goblin Slayer.

Imo, people are just giving the show a bad rap

I think why Goblin Slayer shocked so many while Berserk gets less talked about is because Berserk has had that rep for decades. People know what they're getting with Berserk.

Like myself a lot of people went into Goblin Slayer knowing nothing about it. It started out in a typical chipper anime fantasy world introducing cute bubbly anime girls only to have one brutally raped within 10 minutes of the show. It took a complete 180 in seconds and I'm sure many people who didn't know what they're signing up for. I don't remember a disclaimer while watching it but I think CR put one up in the wake of all the buzz.

It's really weird going from the Goblins in this and the ones in Slime Isekai. Sooooo different.

Sorry for the double post but season 3 (technically S2) of Seven Deadly Sins is up on Netflix. II know what I'm doing for the next several nights.

LOL I was just thinking that about Slime and Goblin Slayer today! hahaha Slime I gave another chance to and it's ok. Definitely enjoyable to watch. No goblin rape expected here.

Watched some Slime, Frankenstein Family, and Skullfaced Bookseller Honda-san. I really enjoyed the first episode of Honda-san. Anime comedy is usually pretty hit or miss with me, but I thought the second half of ep 1 was great. I easily related to Honda reacting to people sharing more than they probably should in public.

On a side story, my local news cracked me up tonight. They closed the show by talking about Funko's Golden Girls cereal (off-topic aside in spoiler).
The idea of a cereal manufactured by Funko is so dumb. I certainly wouldn't eat a box of Leg-Os, Kenner Flakes, or Mattel Toast Crunch.
The co-anchor said "And the box features the girls in an anim..uh... style." I imagine as soon as the camera cut she said "Ok, who edited this copy? You guys need to be more careful, you misspelled anima."

Anyone find any gems this season? I'm feeling a smidge anime deprived this season with a lot of derivative looking anime I'm not even willing to give a go. If ya'll spent the time to watch all the episodes of a show and would recommend, I'd like to give it a shot. Looked at CR and elsewhere and couldn't find anything appealing to watch today :(

Hmmm, have you checked out the Sumo anime? I'm caught up with it an it's pretty good. It's your typical sports anime. The pacing is good and the story is moving along nicely. Out of all the new shows I'm probably enjoying this one the most.

Run with the Wind is another sports anime I'm watching that went into blind and ended up enjoying it. Bunny Girl Senpai if you're in the mood for drama, a little comedy and romance. I think I remember you saying you didn't care for Slime Isekai but I've really been enjoying it. And stay far away from Conception. What a load of trash that was.

And if you guys have Netflix we get Castlevania on Friday.

I finished up Seven Deadly Sins season 3 the other night. It was good, but I enjoyed the first season way more than this. All the power level talk really cheapened the show for me.

Nah I warmed up to the Slime show. Also, latest Skip Beat chapter was great. I wish it wasn't a monthly release cuz it's moving slow as molasses atm.

I'm like a thousand anime DVDs backlogged and people are watching new 'still work in progress being produced' stuff? Yikes! Something tells me there may be a flaw in my time management skill.

I get my anime from Toonami so don't feel too bad. Tonight they are debuting a new show called Mob Psycho.

In the meantime, I have plenty of DVD's to watch from past Rightstuf sales so my backlog will keep me busy for years.

Recently finished:
-Castlevania S2: As a long time fan of the game series, this was a treat. A little slow at times. Amazing bloody fights.
-Cells at Work: Funny and possibly a bit educational. Platelets are adorable.
-Chio's School Road: Very funny! Unfortunately, the manga was cancelled, so we won't be getting a second season unless they create new content for it (first season used 27 of the 45 chapters).
-Hakumei to Mikochi: Loved it! Excellent relaxing sol.
-High Score Girl: So good! The cgi takes getting used to, but the story spanning the growth of arcade and console gaming, along with all the gaming references, made this an interesting coming of age romantic comedy. I really hope they make a S2 to finish the story.

-How Not To Summon A Demon Lord: Had potential but fell flat. A few funny moments and levels of ecchi I didn't expect from a broadcast show. Not the worst time killer, but pass if you have other stuff to watch.
-Mononoke: Cool art and alright stories. Too slow paced for me. The main character seems interesting, but you don't get to learn much (or anything) about him. Worth a watch for fans of Japanese ghost stories.
-Overlord S3: So good and brutal! As the story progresses, Ainz is turning more into his overlord character. They must make S4.

-Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs: Fun supernatural ecchi comedy. Better than I expected. I would watch another season if they make it.

Also finished some animated series:
-Adventure Time: I can see this series being either hit or miss with most people. It was a hit to me. The story starts off very kid oriented, but becomes more interesting to adults over time (starting around S3). I think they did a good job with the ending. They plan to continue the story in comic books.
-Dragon Prince S1: The creators did a good job carrying over that Avatar feel. My only complaints are a terrible choice of voice for Rayla (reminds me of the girl from Brave) and some choppy cgi animation (probably budget constraints). If you liked Avatar, you should check this out. Looking forward to S2.

I also watched Castlevania S2 this weekend. Was awesome. I love the mature script in this show! Hope we get more. Looked up those other two. Not sure Hakumei to Mikochi would be for me, but I'm definitely going to try out High Score Girl. As a gamer that sounds appealing.

My brain hurts, my neck hurts, and I think I have eye strain... What the heck was I thinking when I took on cataloging Pioneer's anime DVD releases? This is way beyond my original estimations, like way, waay, waaay beyond my original estimations. My time working on this has already exceeded all of the time it took to catalog Central Park Media's anime releases, and that took just under the forty-eight hour mark. But this, this is kinda like, well imagine if someone attempted to catalog every single Disney sequel ever made, and then catalog every known release release of each and every one of those sequels, that's what this is like! Right now I'm part way into titles beginning with letter "I", cray zee!

I blame the people who wrote The Anime Encyclopedia for being ever so British and not putting enough effort into their latest editions, and Andy Mangels for giving up part way into 2003.

I have an anime related question that has bugged me for years. I see this come up in romantic comedies a lot. You'll get dialogue like:

Person A: Will you go out with me?

Person B: *hesitates*

Person A: What, do you hate me?

Person B: No, I don't hate you.

Person A: Great, let's get married right now.

So you either hate a person or you love them, with no room for middle ground. Is this a Japanese cultural thing or just anime story style?

Last edited by a moderator:
My example dialogue was hyperbole, but the basic scenario seems common in anime. If you don't hate someone, that means you love them. I wish I could think of a good example, but I've been binging Grand Blue so I have nothing but comedy on the brain at the moment.

If no one knows what I'm talking about, I'll post a real example the next time I come across it.

Has anyone seen anything around another set of episodes for RE: Zero Starting Life in a New World? I've seen the two OVAs, but nothing about continuing that main set of 25 episodes. There's still a lot of story left right? Is the web/light novel complete?

After the TV series, I think there are only the comedy shorts (Break Time and its sequel) and two OVA movies (Memory Snow and the one coming later that is a prequel with Emilia meeting Pack). No further TV eps have been announced. The TV series covers volumes 1-9. There are at least 16 volumes released as of June of this year. The novels are still going.
