Discs rot, flash memory cards fail, cartridge pins get corroded. If you live a long life, chances are good some of your physical media won’t last you till you’re in your grave, either. If you want to preserve your games, the only way is to back them up (or rely on the backups others have made).
I mean sure… and the worlds gonna end eventually too and all your media will be lost…

I’ll bet majority of 3DS and WiiU physical media last decades beyond March 2023 and is still kicking when my heart stops ticking.

I just wish Nintendo and Sony would respect peoples digital purchases in the same way Steam, Epic, Xbox and other digital stores do.

A few weeks ago I was playing an old Castlevania on my Xbox and in a few short minutes I had it downloaded and booted. Lately I’ve been playing Earthbound on my Switch and it just made me wish that Nintendo would let us buy these classic Super Nintendo games and keep our libraries moving forward each generation like old Xbox games.

I sincerely doubt that anyone here uses a 32GB or lower card in their Switch. I don't know why device makers say that as a precaution, but I've never had any problems using any size card in any device, as long as it's formatted properly.

That article is for the 3DS family of systems. Nintendo has their own branded microSD cards for Switch that go up to at least 512 GB.

And your game files for your digital purchases will be available to download long after March 2023. They’ll be available on your hard drive or wherever else you choose to back them up long after your systems die, long after your physical media fails, and long after you’re in your grave, as long as someone continues to transfer the files to new storage media.

Look, there are advantages to physical media over digital, and generally I prefer it, but longevity is not one of them. I don’t know why some people try to push that notion.

The option to list all Virtual Console games by platform is gone, and games from many platforms (N64 games playable on Wii U, GBA and DS games, Wii games that were digitally ported to Wii U like the Mario Galaxies and Metroid Prime Trilogy, etc. etc.) have been removed! If you search for them, they don’t come up, and if you search for them individually on Google, it takes you to a “Whoops!” error page on the eShop. I assume they are still purchase-able on the systems themselves until next March (I won’t be able to check until I get home from work tonight), but creating a wishlist and buying many of these games via a web browser is no longer an option! Now we have to search for them and buy them exclusively on the consoles themselves!
I thought the same thing, since the ridiculous aftermarket price for physical copies of Metroid Prime Trilogy was a selling point for me for the Wii U. The Google link just brought up the main Nintendo store page for me.

It’s literally one of them. You can go to yard sales or eBay and literally buy NES and SNES physical media that is not available in any legal digital store. I get your point that all that stuff is also available from third party sites as preservation, I just wish the best option for some of it wasn’t going outside of legit marketplaces where I’ve purchased the games once already.

My main original point though, is that I would like to see Nintendo be more user friendly with Digital media to make it easier to access legacy purchases, if they did that then I’d be all in on Digital Switch games instead of cartridges. If I had confidence that the SwitchU would play my Switch games. It’s just disappointing to see them shut down these stores. They burned me the first time when I bought tons of Wii Virtual Console games and then shut that store down. Would be nice to keep adding to a library of awesome Nintendo classics from Nintendo’s store.

This again?

The comparison to NES and SNES is bogus. Those systems never had cartridges with incomplete/unfinished software that needed online updates.

As soon as they started relying on online updates and selling incomplete physical games we became reliant on them leaving software updates their content distribution networks regardless of what version you own.

You’re confusing accessibility to new audiences with preservation for personal use, these are different things. Yes, physical media is superior for the former outside of the realm of piracy. No, it is not superior for the latter. If you’re serious about keeping your purchased games in good shape for your own use years down the line, it is much more difficult to rip physical media and then write it again to identical physical media (or mod the console to use a more common storage format like SD cards) than it is to copy digitally purchased titles from an HDD or SD card.

I agree that Nintendo could be better about preserving digital libraries for purchase, and perhaps even for redownloads, but they’ve already said you’ll be able to redownload games you own from their stores past March 2023 for the foreseeable future; and they can’t stop you from backing up your games on external storage devices so you have access to them in perpetuity.

Games definitely had bugs and issues that got fixed in localization to the other regions or releasing updated versions in new cartridges with those issues fixed.

I guess they overhauled the webstore recently?

Edit: They still don't show when deals end on the game's page.
Yeah and some of the prices don't accurately reflect until you click on them also.
Also, we can now see publishers discounts on the website instead of having to pull up the eshop on the Switch.

Art Sqool shows the regular price but then also shows the .98 price for owning Comic Coloring Book.

God damn that WWF No mercy save bug was devastating when I was younger.
I never even knew there was a save bug in that. I really only played it to beat it and when I was at friends house I would school them. I was still hooked on VPW2 and felt the additions to No Mercy were a downgrade so maybe if I played longer I would have encountered it.

All the talk of Earthbound coming to the Switch also brings up the point of games that, for whatever reason, never got an English language release, i.e. Mother 3, Miles Edgeworth 2 (although the release of Ace Attorney Chronicles may cause some to hope), Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, and Jump Ultimate Stars. Not to mention the years of classic Fire Emblem games. These are things that, if we want to play them in today's day and age, we either have to hope for one of those Switch bundles like Capcom did with the Castlevania and Contra franchises (Castlevania Bloodlines without a rom or physical Genesis copy, hell yeah), or rely on fan translated roms. There are a lot of games that, if not purchased digitally, are lost to time. I still have an Ambassador 3DS with the GBA games that were never released on the 3DS any other way, as well as the DSIWare Shantae and Legendof Zelda Four Swords Adventures. I see the benefit of both digital and physical. And thank you to the poster who pointed out that I can format a larger Micro SDHC card or my 3DS. I will be taking advantage of that.

With Nintendo turning off in-game purchases next March, do you think games like Pokemon Shuffle or Nintendo Badge Arcade will become completely free to play then?

Yeah it sucked because it would wipe out all of the wrestlers you created. Spent hours re creating just to have them wiped again later.

I think March's game will either be Kirby 64 because new 3D Kirby or Pokemon Snap, which will be announced on the 27th during Pokemon Day.
I just hope they announce another batch in the summer direct.

To sum things up Vivid Knight is a good rogue like game, but I don't think it's a great one.

To start you play some princess I believe and go into dungeons. That's really the whole story. The gameplay is a dungeon crawler, where each step usually takes 1 stamina out of a pool. In battles it's an autobattler where you get gems of characters and have them battle enemies. One of the sets of enemies has a key which unlocks the next floor. It's recommended to do as many battles as possible, as this is the main way to earn money. Money only has two purposes, which is to buy more gems of characters from a merchant and buy more party slots for your characters. You could acquire the same gem characters and combine 3 to make a one star unit. You can also combine 3 of these one star units to make a gold star unit, which I believe is the strongest. This requires 9 gems of the character overall.

In the battles you also get to choose gems which have powers attached to them. They generally do something like attacking, doing some status on an enemy and healing and buffing your characters. You also find a currency on the floor which can buy these gems from a certain dealer. They activate once a turn and have cooldowns. Another dealer takes gold and deals in the gem characters. There is a gatcha mechanic to acquiring things, but you can redraw for a cost. Every unit has abilities which when stacked on the team unlock many battle bonuses. It's a cool system, and the other gems you use in battle have different rarities as well. Each time you pass a floor you get bonuses and may have bosses as well. These are shown as you enter a level.

The sound is okay for attacks, but kind of annoying for some sounds especially the character gem dealer. The gameplay loop is satisfying although it's a bit hands off. After you're done another type of gem unlocks stuff gatcha style, in which you choose 1 of 3 to get more units/gems/permanent buffs. I like the buffs especially the stamina ones. You eventually get an ending, which I did after a bit over 6 hours, but there are harder dungeons to conquer.

Overall I think the game is a decent quality rogue like game. There is enough variety and the gatcha is frustrating but fun as well. It's almost impossible to see all the buffs/debuffs, as the UI isn't amazing, but it's cool to see all the stacks working. Overall I think it's average, but well worth playing after a sale. 7/10

At least they added a cart.

Edit: Nevermind. The cart is for the My Nintendo store.

Edit 2: Wait. They sell physical games now?

Edit 3: Okay. My Nintendo and My Nintendo store are not the same thing. Great names.

I really don't like the new way they are handling the rewards. They need to go back to the code system so we don't have to place an order right away. I like to have a bunch of items to save on shipping.

At first it was sold out but it went back in stock and I picked it up. I played a lot of Xcom 2 on PC, but it’ll be nice to have a Switch version for essentially $2.50.
Still available, heck of a deal. I loved the first Xcom reboot game, but wasn't sure how this would run on Switch. For $5 its worth a try.

For those still playing Sword and Shield, they started the first of three monthly tournaments today that give the shiny Galarian legendary birds as participation trophies. The in-game versions are shiny locked, so this is currently the only way to get them shiny.

Was going to mention that but I think they can't get them if they didn't already register for the current tournament.

All it requires is participating in 1 match. Not even winning or anything. Probably just Nintendo getting people to pay for online for the chance to get these shiny birds.

I have several things ordered but am waiting on shipping/delays (Analogue Pocket, AYN ODIN, Steam Deck, BeatemUps Satisfye OLED grip, Miyoo Mini, "Go Straight" book from Bitmap Books on Beat'em ups, Mclassic Upscaler, etc) so imagine my shock when Nintendo actually shipped my refurbished New 2DS XL only 1-2 days after ordering. I admit I have problems with buying so much of this crap though lol.

Everything I heard said three matches. But yeah, win or lose you get the bird. That's why I called them participation trophies. As long as you play three matches, you get a prize. Which is good, because I do fine vs the NPC, but not against real people.

A user on gfaqs copy of persona q 1 stopped working so he tried to get the free digital version but they supposedly denied him due to the games age. So that sucks for anyone else who would need to get one.

1 match for each tournament to be specific.
