At this point I will pay the new console price for HDR output over HDMI 2.1+ from the dock. After upgrading my gaming displays in recent months, it's jarring how inferior a docked nsw looks compared to PC and PS5 on a 55" oled. Steam deck has taken over as my primary handheld and I don't see that changing. Might even sell off the joycon set since I still hate the unchanged uncomfortable stick layout & absence of dpad. Compatibility with existing controllers would be a solid plus.

Just about every game that has tried to mimic motion controls has flopped because a Joy Con is not a WIi Remote. There needs to be a sensor bar or something to capture where you are in space. Gyro alone won't cut it.

New Mario Kart looks open world possibly. Check out how far the track extends out into the horizon when the camera pans out near the end of the footage. I was wondering where the series could possibly innovate after the immaculate MK8, but a Nintendo take on a Forza Horizon type series could be gold. At the very least, 24 racers in a single race will be crazy hectic fun.

Also Donkey Kong got a redesign and looks extremely goofy.
I wouldn’t mind a Mario Kart version of The Crew…

Questions is do I get this at launch or wait for OLED verison?

This isn't an OLED...? The hell, that's kinda surprising. But there's no way the launch version doesn't have rampant issues with that little connector bit for the joy-cons and that stand is bigger, sure, but the sides look pretty narrow/thin.

I'm glad they confirmed cart BC though.

Total guess here, but I think it basically comes down to cost. The front part of the dock is basically a screen protector (and not a very good one as it doesn't entirely cover the screen) while the back part has the circuit boards the dock needs. It could be taller and cover the whole system, but then more material would be used, thereby increasing the cost of the dock. And with Nintendo not subsidizing the console at all, they want to keep the cost as low as possible. It might only cost a few pennies more to make the dock cover everything, but that cost ads up fast!
That was always my assumption too. Someone did the math on how much they'd save, and someone else thought it was a good idea to go ahead with.

I'm also very glad that they finally confirmed that physical Switch 1 games will be playable on Switch 2 (physical media 4 lyfe!), but the only bad thing about it is that Nintendo will presumably STILL refuse to routinely majorly discount or permanently drop prices on their first party Switch 1 games to $20 or $30 each (like in a Nintendo Selects line), since they'll be playable on Switch 2.

I'm sure they're pretty durable, but all I can think of is a cat knocking off the Switch 2 from the tablet stand I use (due to case and not wanting to cook the thing in the dock) to dock to my TV and landing perfectly on the joycon to do just that.

My cats haven't knocked off my Switch once, so it's more irrational fear, but possible.

Cannot imagine a kid dropping it at just the right angle. But they must have thought of that and it's hopefully pretty secure. Nintendo did make the GameCube, the most bulletproof console ever made. Outside of shit sub-assemblies (ex. joysticks), the system themselves are pretty sturdy.

I don't think the new joycons are going to have an issue with the connector. The connector seems to be recessed inside the new rail slot slightly and the colored part of the joycon seems to fit perfectly into that slot a bit before it comes into contact with the pin part. All of the animations for how they attach show the joycons going in at a slight angle and releasing at an angle. So, again, the pin part isn't a tight fit since the joycon is expected to come in at various angles. I'll mainly be playing docked and my dock current for the OG Switch is in a spot where it can't be bumped near the corner of the room. Still, I don't think it'll be as fragile as people think. Especially with that colored part of the joycon being as thick as it is.

It's live! After about 10 minutes of errors, I was able to get a raffle ticket. Here are the rules: It's one raffle per account/person

Showing add to cart for me.

Awesome.. thx. I'll probably order that and some switch games that I don't have yet like Kirby & the Forgotten Land and the new Mario vs. Donkey Kong one.

Mine seems more than bright enough during the day. If it's in a darker corner turn off the auto brightness feature so it's not using the light sensor to determine brightness.

They want $100 for a freaking alarm clock? They couldn't even sell Game Boy Micros for $100 and those things were actually pretty slick

$100 in 2005 was like $161.60 in today's money. $61 in 2005 money was worth $100.19 in today's money. So the cost of two GBA games at that time was what Alarmo would have been.

Of course GBA Micro didn't include any games. It was just a brick without spending more on games. So factor in another $30 which in today's money would be $48.48... which makes a grand total of $210.08 in today's money for a GBA micro and a single game.

Still a better deal.

I figured out what alarmo is for. It’s tied to your Nintendo account during purchase or registration, right? Thereafter, all eShop titles double in price now that their account has the “will pay anything” flag enabled.

Nah, Micro was a worse version of the GBA in pretty much every way and the worst option on the market at the time. Smaller screen. No ability to play GB & GBC games. Bad ergonmics that lead to cramped hands. It's a nice shelf decoration. I was more than happy to skip that and stick with my GBA SP's with Brighter Backlit Screen (SP+'s as we called them) that could play all of my GB, GBC, & GBA games and didn't break my hands after a short play time. It's easy to see why the gba micro flopped hard. Especially when you got less for the price and the SP+'s dropped to $80 or something at the time. Granted the Micro's also went on clearance and one could be had for cheap if you found a Sears or some other store that actually had stock, but what a waste when the SP+ existed and did everything better. Plus if you wanted to do any link cable stuff... you had to have the proprietary adapter to make it work.

Alarmo is something new. It's easy to poke at it. It's not going to appeal to everyone though I think it could help people a lot more than they realize with their sleep. Sort of like the Pokewalker could help people get more physically fit... or the Wii U Fit Meter, Wii Fit with it's ballance board, or Ring Fit Adventure... etc.. if people actually use them. It's improved my sleep pattern and made getting up a lot easier. So, to me, it serves a new fuction much better than the cut down over priced uncomfortable gba with the tiny screen that was the micro. But everyone values things different.

If the Switch 2 starts at $450, part of me hopes that sales underwhelm and they release a console-only version. If the Pro controller is compatible with Switch 2, many people have no need for the joy con at all.

They never did that all this time, don't see why poor sales would make them change that. If anything iirc they're aware that most people prefer the hybrid format or even just handheld-only to docked-only.

The Switch Lite made sense because portability is one of the Switch's strong suits, being able to play console-quality games on a handheld.

A dock-only Switch goes against that, while realistically not solving anything. A small power upgrade would feel pointless and certainly wouldn't compare to a PS5/XSX. And even if Nintendo could go all in on power, they wouldn't dare to actually do so, because they wouldn't want such a big gap in power between the regular Switch 2 and a dock-only version.

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom just had it's first major used price drop on gamefly to $39.99. After tax and shipping, $46.97 for me. Not the best deal ever but I didn't pay full price and was always planning to get it, so I'll count it as a win. It would be close to $20 more after tax for me to go buy it in store right now.
