Right, and I think people here mostly had reasonable expectations. But if you look at Reddit or Twitter there were plenty of people who were expecting it to be all of the "best" stuff back in stock as opposed to just convention leftovers and other stuff they generally have problems selling. LRG's marketing has always been bad, but they continue to fumble over bars that are astonishingly low. It wouldn't have been hard at all to publish a list in advance instead of whatever word salad this is:

They didn't even bother to add "Vita" to the list of platform filters

I wonder how serious this issue is. Famicom carts run on 3.3V where as NES are 5V but there are converters for them which look mostly like just converting the traces for the wider connection. Heck some of the early release NES games have converters built in because they are using famicom boards. I'm genuinely curious... though I never had much interest in repro game carts. I'd maybe consider an everdrive, but beyond that... it's original or just go emulate on NES/SNES classic or another machine.

Someone made a step-by-step of LRG's response plan:
  • Ignore the issue, hoping it will blow over
  • Wait for customer dissatisfaction to boil, inevitably forcing a generic response
  • Unable to avoid the backlash, find themselves forced to either recall/refund the games or do an updated production run that isn't functionally a bootleg, while offloading responsibility to a nameless third party production partner
True to form, their statement yesterday did all three. They really had to struggle to find someone else to blame, though: "We have identified that these titles were not manufactured by our regular partner who we have worked with across 30+ titles..." I'm not sure how you have to identify the people you sign manufacturing contracts with.

I think it's a combination. The NES stuff is pretty niche and this thread has been around long enough that none of us are really surprised by the corners LRG cuts anymore.

Anyone that is buying reproduction games or new retro games carts and overpriced collector's editions from LRG in my opinion is foolish.

I only buy standard releases on Switch, Xbox or PlayStation. I have two open preorders now for Bounty Hunter and Castlevania Dominus Collection and the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remaster Collection all for Xbox. I have the Switch Konami Store Exclusive cover for Castlevania ordered as well.

I just saw that Atari is selling the Thing Remastered on their web site so I will buy that direct from them. I was expecting that to show up on LRG.
Only disappointing thing about that is no Xbox version just PS5 and Switch. I will get the PS5 version.

I liked your post because the step-by-step is funny, and LRG's quality control is definitely in question here, but to be fair, when there's an issue with a physical product, it's not a quick process to identify issues especially when a product is made by an outside manufacturer, regular or not. Part of it is figuring out first if it's widespread or contained.

Power Rangers showed up first on Atari's website and then went up everywhere else, so maybe the same will happen with The Thing.

Here's the full text, if anyone cares
Good Afternoon,

We were recently made aware of reports circulating, speaking to a potential issue when using select NES games which Limited Run Games have previously retailed on our website.

The reports make mention of two titles: Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland and PioPow. Upon learning about this issue from our community, we immediately began investigating and can confirm that due to an issue with voltage regulation, there is a small chance that prolonged use of these titles could result in damage to either the cartridge or the console hardware.

We have identified that these titles were not manufactured by our regular partner who we have worked with across 30+ titles and who we trust implicitly thanks to their impeccable manufacturing track record. The manufacturer who produced Rugrats and PioPow has only worked on a very small handful of titles for Limited Run Games and right now, we are going through our back catalogue of NES titles manufactured by this supplier and testing for possible issues. While we conduct further testing, our immediate pledge is to rectify the potential issue with Rugrats and PioPow and ensure that this will not happen again.

We are committed to delivering high-quality products and never want to leave our customers with anything short of the best.

These titles are no longer available to purchase, however we are currently in the process of fulfilling back orders for both Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland and PioPow. Starting immediately, we will not be sending out any unfilled orders for either of these titles to customers who have previously pre-ordered. Instead we are re-manufacturing these titles ourselves via our trusted manufacturing partner. For Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, this pertains to both the Standard and Collector’s Edition of the title. Those who pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition will be contacted in advance and will be offered the choice of receiving their order with the NES cart removed which will then follow upon re-manufacture, or should they wish to maintain the manufacturer’s seal, we can instead wait until the cartridge is re-manufactured and included in the Collector’s Edition before shipping. Sadly, this will result in a delay while we re-manufacture cartridges for these titles, and for this we humbly apologise.

Those who do not wish to wait for either title to be re-manufactured will be welcome to a full refund and we ask that customers contact Customer Service immediately should they wish for a refund to be processed. Those who have already pre-ordered either title will be sent a newly manufactured version of their title automatically, there is no need to contact Customer Service.

For those who have already pre-ordered and received their cartridge: we do not recommend continuing using their game, however there is no need to return the game to us. We will automatically be sending out a revised version to each and every customer as soon as possible. We will update all customers on expected delivery dates as soon as we have them and kindly ask for your patience as we work our way through this issue.

We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience these issues have caused and moving forward, we will not be distributing any original cartridge sourced by this manufacturer.

I will never buy from Atari again...purchased an item Late Nov. Had to return, but before I could do that I had to contact them to start the process and make sure the number they gave me was in the package as well as send pictures of what I was returning. Needed to pay shipping and sent it away in Dec (it took 2 and a half weeks to get my order in the first place). Then had to contact them again in late Jan! to eventually get my money back on my return that they said they were sorry for the delay.

I mean if not going to return, no problems, as long as you don't mind waiting. Course this is the LRG thread. Everyone here is used to waiting

I’ve been championing LRG for years even after getting a Streets of rage 4 Limited edition that didn’t have the game inside, but after the 3DO shit and now the NES drama, it’s obvious they will cut corners anyway they get to the detriment of the product’s quality.

I won’t be buying from LRG anymore for the most part, might as well just order from Aliexpress.
And with that said , I have a few dozen unopened Collections from them, I don’t even wanna think how many are missing items.

This new revelation isn’t surprising, Doug already wrote in his (now deleted) blog post that Josh knows many of their customers don’t actually open the games. Limited Run always pretends as if these are accidents when they’re intentionally cutting corners on their products.

I will be ordering this one for Xbox.

I'll be sticking with my Dreamcast copy.

I only really trust LRG to do like PS4/5/Switch stuff. I DON'T expect it to be fully updated or anything of their old ways (all DLC and complete games remember that?). Really only want Tomba 2 of their upcoming releases and maybe the Gex trilogy. They'd have to get a really good visual novel or a big RPG release to get me to order again otherwise.

I had a game collection before getting married. So it wasn't a secret or anything I was into videogames. A lot of great social times were spent with games... so it wasn't an unexceptable thing. The only sleep I lost was one time when my first kid was like 3, he got into the closet where my saturn games were and opened them all and dumped all the contents on the carpet and then dropped the cases on the pile he built. It was... a nighmare. Thankfully it was mostly just cracked hinges and the discs still worked. But still, it gave me the push to design my own shelves for a closet that I could lock up when not home. At one point there were money problems but less due to games and more due to a lack of budgetting. I changed how I handled the finances, paid off debts, and started saving. Outside of the house it's been around 8 to 10 years since I've carried any debt for any length of time (usually just a car, which I'd pay off in a year). Next month, I'll pay the house off at the end of the month and be completely financially free. Looking forward to stacking more money as I've been throwing thousands into my principal each month to hit this target about 13 years early.

My freshman year of college, my dorm roommate and I had very different interests. We got along just fine but we were just into very different things. There was one weekend where there was a pretty heavy snowstorm and cold snap, we spent the entire weekend playing Jedi Power Battles beginning to end on Dreamcast.

He was in the reserves and 9/11 happened our freshman year so I’m not sure what happened to him after freshman year because we didn’t keep in touch, I’m assuming he got called up but I hope he’s doing alright. Still have fond memories of this game though because of that weekend, I’m probably gonna have to order it.

Congrats. Fortunately I've never incurred carry over debt for my hobbies, though they're definitely numerous (and probably excessive). I've bought way too many video games, Lego sets, limited edition books, and sports cards. That last one is 100% because one of my kids got sucked into cards during Covid and now I'm hooked too. This summer, I'm going to have that same kid run my ebay account to help sell off some stuff (mostly cards). Collection has gotten too big and too varied.

Mine was mostly due to major things happening like an air conditioner goes out or an unexpected medical bill the insurance didn't fully cover. At my worst point, the company I was working for was running out of money and I got let go. Without a good safety net, the cards come out. Nicely once my house is done, my financial responsibilities go down to like a few hundred a month in utilities... and then whatever I'm spending on groceries and gas. It's going to be nice watching my account grow again. Putting kids through college (which I saved for) has been draining. One more year and that's hopefully done too.

I am luckily at the point where my husband doesn’t care what I spend on video games (He doesn’t not play). But I’m also lucky in that even hundreds a months (I don’t spend that much) wouldn’t hurt us.

It wasn’t always like this. When we first got together my husband had IRS debt from a failed business due to the co owner going psycho and not paying payroll taxes. So we watched things at the beginning and once that was paid off we still lived below our means. For the most part we still do, but we are absolutely splurging on our trip to Japan this year. We’ve been lucky/unlucky that his brother and SIL passed during COVID and our kids inherited enough to pay for college. House is paid off (thanks to husband dipping into bitcoin).

I kinda want Jedi Power Battle for same reasons.. But I sorda wished I had purchased KOTOR 1 & 2 physically through LRG.. I blanked out and didn't buy em way back and VGP Hasn't restocked em since they went OOS...

What's up with the Vault pricing? I thought "doorbuster" banner meant on sale. This is the same price as always, right?

It means the temp hire they got to manage inventory in the warehouse literally broke a door moving it around.

LRG is very post-ironic in their humor these days.

Just got my first ever VGP purchase today. Impressed with the entire experience. Prices were mostly good (only paid +$10 over list price for Animal Well, versus the extra $35-40 on the gray market), shipping was fast, and the games were packed in a perfectly sized cardboard box. Will definitely keep them bookmarked going forward. Fingers crossed that the 25% tariff on all things Canadian doesn't happen. Would be happy to give them more business!
