It's always hard for me to know which console war team I'm on these days. I am planning to preorder two Switch 2's at launch, but we have a PS5 and 2 Xbox Series set up too, and a PC that can play games okay too. I'm just an idiot that buys it all, I have 3 boys though and my wife will play a lot of Switch games, so it all gets played.

We caught on to the fact Nintendo has done nothing for the last five years. It will be interesting to see actual comparisons of specs to current gen systems once they're released. Rattling off buzz words like 4k, HDR10 support, etc means fuck all until we get specifics.
I know, I've been playing all the top Blizzard, Bethesda, and Microsoft flagship titles that have been coming out since 2020.

Which was your favorite?

Mine was Diablo 4, I am at like 240 paragon level from last season and have 4 characters to max level.

I hear Indiana Jones is good too but I haven't played that yet. I still need to try Starfield too, I'm sure they have fixed a lot of issues people had by now.

I thought with 11 years between Mario Kart 8 and World, they would bring something new.

They couldn’t bring back Selects for Switch because $20 vs $80 would not be a strength for selling new titles.

Blizzard releasing WoW classic was a highlight, Bethesda hasn't done shit and Starfield was a massive miss for me, and MS I'd have to say my first venture into FH5 was a blast. Out of all five years, I think Lies of P was my only true love moment with Elden Ring being a good second.

It's a hard balance I think, if you bring to much new, then you change the game so much that people that love stuff from the older ones complain that it's too different. If you don't change enough then people say your just releasing the same game.

When I think of Mario Kart, this one on Wii-U/Switch seems pretty good, there is not much I can think of that I would want in a new one. My main thing would be more courses on the Battle modes, when I play those with my kids, the few courses they have available get old pretty quick. What kinds of things would you want from a new Mario Kart?

I'm seeing early reports that to upgrade games like BoTW and ToTK to the Switch 2 version will cost $30. That's insane.

Also battery life on NS2 will be worse than Switch 1. The Battery is tiny. Its 1/4 the size of the battery in the ROG Ally. Ally X has a 80Wh battery. NS2 has a 20Wh.
I was definitely disappointed to see the battery size only being 20wh. I mostly play docked so not the end of the world for me, but when I do travel with it, would have been nice to have a bit more juice

Honestly I feel the same about Smash Bros. I would be fine with Smash Ultimate again if they update net code and gave us another dlc with a few more characters and maps

I want a single player mode like Diddy Kong Racing, missions, bosses. I want to see the finishing times in Grand Prix…why did they ever take that away. I guess they figured we are too dumb to care about times. Ew long numbers.

After playing Forza Horizon, Mario kart feels like 10% of the content.

I don't see many comparisons between the other consoles here. I think it is almost certain the SW2 will not be as powerful as the X-whatever or the PS5.

This is about a game costing $80 and the console costing $450. I guess it is not at all the different to the $70 game and $500 console. Maye it is an image thing. The closer to $100 per game the closer I am to asking this site to rename itself to Even-More-CAG

If it is being played, i get it. I have 2 PS5 (i got the Pro, son has regular) and Xbox Series X (wife) and then we have 2 SW and 1 SW lite and a Steam Deck....here's the thing. None of us play the Switches anymore so there is no point getting the SW2

The $80 price's really don't bother me that much the more I think about them, if they include a ton of content. I think it will just be case by case as to the $80 being worth it. If I look at Fortnite or Roblox, my kids have spent way more then $80 over the past 5 years on those games to get more skins or random other things in the games. $80 will feel bad if it's $80 and then 3 months later they bring out a $25 expansion and then another $20 expansion 3 months after that, but if $80 gets you a full game that feels like a full game, it doesn't seem to bad to me. I mean shoot, I think my kids have spent about $30 each on Brawl Stars on the phone too, which is a dumb little battle arena game that can get pretty addicting.

Nintendo is really just going back to Super Nintendo prices.

Only kidding of course, that was some weird Canadian company that had bad pricing for online sales, Super Nintendo was actually about the same:

Exactly.

and then you get into the business of comparing Nintendo to well...other publishers, and the 'carved content' value they provide at $60 or $70 MSRPs.

not to mention they're offering a package where you can get Mario Kart digital for only +$50. Or else you can simply not buy it. Or wait for a discount like a real CAG. You have options. It's just one game. and maybe it will suck like brianadude is saying and many of us won't want to buy it anyways.

The market will decide in June. It will let everyone know exactly how valuable this stuff is, with unit sales and aggregate review scores. The market always decides. It doesn't care about screamy-head day1 overreactions to price announcements.

For those having a hard time with the console price.
Switch 2 $450, Rog Ally $800, Steam Deck $399, Legion $699, MSI $650
The closest thing price wise is the SD and that's only 60hz and doesn't come with a dock. Obviously you get more flexibility with the pcs.
There are decent enough docks out there for less than $50 and when has Nintendo ever had a sale like Steam regularly does with decent games?

I think the lowest any of the "main" flagship games for Nintendo have gone is $30.

More Power, Smoother Gameplay

With 10x the graphics performance of the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2 delivers smoother gameplay and sharper visuals.

  • Tensor Cores boost AI-powered graphics while keeping power consumption efficient.
  • RT Cores enhance in-game realism with dynamic lighting and natural reflections.
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via NVIDIA G-SYNC in handheld mode ensures ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay.

I guess I'm the only one who is excited about wanting to play Metroid Prime 4 in 4K60 with HDR. I thought the new Donkey Kong looked really enticing as well.
I'm excited for Metroid, but that is probably a winter 2025 game, not a launch title. I was hoping Donkey Kong was going to be Mario Odyssey 2, so I was slightly let down that it wasn't a sequel to Mario Odyssey, but I really liked Donkey Kong 64, so I am sure I will like this Donkey Kong game too. It's also not a launch game, it's more of a launch window game since it's a month later. Mario Kart seems to be the only first party launch game unless you include whatever that walk around and read things about the console game is. Even that Drag X Drive wheelchair basketball game just says Summer 2025.

Also JohnnyCage said above "I think it looks great. I almost wish I was underwhelmed by the games so I wouldn't have to drop $500 at launch. But Mario Kart, Donkey Kong and Prime 4 is such a killer 1-2-3 punch that I can't ignore it. The Wii U was easy to skip at launch because it had no killer apps in sight."

I am impressed that Nintendo is able to drag out the same franchises over and over and over again....Can you imagine how expenisve it will be for the Switch 2, Extra controllers (for 4 player) and Mario World?

Ironically the last Nintendo console i bought was the Wii U. I still contend that it was a great console. Aside from the stupid name, which is almost as bad as Xbox's terrible naming conventions. The Wii U was basically just a better Wii. What it lacked was games. No mainline Mario or Zelda games for most of it's life cycle.

You better believe Wii U would have sold 100+ million units too if they had launched Zelda BOTW at the launch of the console like they did with the Switch. Unironically all of the Switch's highest selling games of all time are all of the Wii U ports, Zelda BOTW, Mario Kart 8, etc..

Hey let's slap the word Deluxe at the end of the title and make people buy the game again! Brilliant! 😂

I know you're just being cheeky, but Animal Crossing, Smash Ultimate, Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Sword/Shield, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, and Super Mario Party are all top 10 lifetime sellers for switch and aren't on Wii U

I get that Atari (2600) games were $30 - $35 when they first released which is equalt to about $125 today, but my head just can't wrap itself around $80 for a game. $70 is hard enough, but I can shrug that off to graphics and length of a game/ replayability (and not like I buy many games at launch anyways).

Maybe this WILL allow me to get caught up on my backlog

I'm enjoying this gap between the Direct and the first preorders going up next week. I'm still on the fence but leaning seriously over and thinking of all the positives this could be for me to buy at launch. The biggest positive would be starting fresh with a new system and changing to buy digital but only making a purchase when I'm ready to play the specific game. So no more chasing physical deals or building some big NEW backlog again. That said, I feel like for this to work, I'd need to go ahead and start selling off my old systems and games (other than key switch games I want to play and keep). I don't play a lot these days, so this would actually work to my benefit since I wouldn't have the fomo to buy a physical copy before they were out of print or chase deals (I could still wait for digital games to go on sale, just not buy them unless I'm ready to play).

That said, it's not like I need the system at launch, though I know I could probably get my family together for some mario kart. We'll see. I still have plenty of tiem to think and even if I don't get a preorder in next week, I have my name on that Nintendo.com thing so I can pre-order directly from Nintendo in May.

Of course I'm being cheeky but Switch's best selling game of all time is a port of Mario Kart 8, Zela BOTW is #4, New Super Mario Bros. U is #10, etc..

Z: BOTW was just such a strong game, it's all people talked about or played for months. Once they announced that it was going to be cross-gen there was no reason to own a Wii U anymore. The Wii U was just a better Wii just like the NS2 is just a better Switch. History shows that Nintendo tends to have a down cycle following a good one. I'm not expecting Switch 2 to sell as well as the Switch but I'm not expecting Wii U levels of bad either.

I was just thinking, there's not a single Xbox or Playstation game that would get me to physically line up at midnight at a store to buy a game. BOTW is probably the last game that would get me to do that.

That is way past my bedtime, I will just have Amazon deliver it between 4am-10am (with free enxt day delivery) if I need a game that badly

I can't recall the last midnight game I picked up at GameStop...those were days

I am fine with the system price, the price for the software is the wild part for me. It's inconsistent and hard to tell why some games are priced higher or lower. Hoping it's just Walmart listing that is wrong.

I mean TOTK already set the precedent. If they think they can get away with it for their "premium" titles, then they'll do it. Simple as that. So far, it makes sense that they consider Zelda and now Mario Kart that.

We'll see how it goes for Pokemon, Mario platformers, Animal Crossing, and Smash....

Even Sony and MS got rid of their budget lineup. They realized that with digital they never have to drop the price, just have a sale every month so it looks like people are getting a deal.

You got me thinking maybe 2010 for Black Ops 1, was the last midnight launch I did.
Was either a Call of Duty / Madden....mihgt have been a WoW expansion. I remember people talking on phones (not a smart phone, actually talking) about how friends had got home had to still download a patch or something along those lines and not even playing it right away

MS takes it a step further and only puts anything decent on sale maybe once a year!

I'll probably buy NSW2 when there's a new Zelda. $450 might be better spent towards an OLED steamdeck for me until then.

New picross 3d and stylus would have made it a day 1 purchase. Not even kidding.

I can't remember, does Gamestop's temp charge for the full amount or is it like a penny? Or not at all? I honestly can't remember how Gamestop handles pre-orders.

I haven't lined up to buy anything since my kids were younger and maybe there was a pokemon release or something.

It's been so long since I've even been in a GS. Last time I preordered something there you had to put $5 down minimum. Though I do remember like for Fire Emblem Fates SE that I paid in full because I didn't want to mess around with it. Thankfully, that worked out and I was one of the few that got it from the nearest store (which now is gone).

Bestbuy does an initial charge and then doesn't charge until something is about to get ready to ship. At least for games. I mostly use BB, though what I've bought from Nitnendo directly... they pack their stuff like pros. If it's the same price, I'd just buy direct.

2 hour battery was more or less the same as the OG 3DS. With the 3DS you had other third party options; a slightly better battery, a much better battery that made the system 30 percent thicker, or a charging grip. With the Switch you can always just play docked.

Let's be honest, Nintendo should charge at least $100 for first party games. The polished, premium experience their games deliver on day 1 is worth at least twice as much as anything Sony or Microsoft releases in a half baked state. Historic IPs with tremendous legacies deserve higher prices to ensure future releases can meet player expectations.
