07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. How does this thread get down to page four? Jeez.

I waited 10 minutes at the register at a Best Buy trying to get the World of Warcraft Atlas. The cashier got all upset because it rung up as a penny, I played dumb, since she was muttering about how they're not supposed to sell stuff that rings up as a penny.

She gets someone from media, who gets someone from games, and finally they all decide to sell it for $10. I had made something up about thinking it was $20 when I realized I might not get it for a penny, so I had an excuse not to get it if they tried to make me pay $30. When she sells it for $10, she was like "well, you got a better deal than you expected!" and I was like "haha yeah.. bitch."

Still, I have two now.. still looking for a 3-4 guide trade for them, or perhaps a good PayPal offer.

Stopped at a GameStop and picked up 3x Suikoden Tactics, 2x Suikoden IV, and 3x Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2 guides.. the Tactics and RE guides are all sealed, but I have others that aren't, so I think they might be sealed by the store. Regardless, all will be added to my list shortly.
 
My one local EB store had all their guides on the shelves sealed last time I went there to check for pennied guides(even though this was the only strict store in my area regarding pennied guides and I'd never get them even if I found them).

Now it seems all my local EB/GS stores are going very strict, even though the one Gamestop and EB still tell me that 'if it's on the floor, they'll sell it to me for .01'.

I got into a nice conversation with the people at the GS I went to yesterday(found 3 MP:Hunters guides but strict no sell policy stopped me AGAIN) about how people working there are paid minimum wage, so I don't see why they're SO anal about following the rules to the letter.

I just got this aggravated look from 2-3 of the clerks, since I've known what GS pays for a while(thought bout a holiday job with them last year but laughed when I heard their start rate), like I'm insulting their big CEO job or something.

I bought a copy of Legend Of Black Kat for Xbox(have it for PS2 but RARELY play the PS2 anymore), but I may return it tonight when I get back from NY.

I think this particular GS has lost any future biz from me, for being such AR idiots.

Usually, when they penny one guide, there are more. I wonder if Xmen Legends II finally dropped to .01 there, not that my local GS people would even let me buy ONE or even gimme one.

I've got a feeling though, that Oblivion is going to penny at BB SOON, since it dropped to the $9.99 discounted price that guides USUALLY drop to prior to pennying.

Then again, some guides have been at that $9.99 price for what seems like forever at BB and just WON'T drop.

I had a similar situation one time at BB. cashier gave me an attitude, even though I was buying a game for $20 along with it.:roll: I don't understand it, it's not like they're on commission or something.

they are either trying to become a manager or they are afraid they will be fired...most likely they look at you and think," why should i let this a-hole have this guide for a penny?"

from my own experience it doesn't depend on which store you try and get them from...it depends on who is behind the register at the time.

i have been denied pennied guides and i have been allowed to purchase them at the same stores... i have learned whom to avoid (believe me)...and in any case,if i am denied,i do not complain.

I don't think X-Men Legends II is pennied. I know we have one at my store but the only labels that printed out in the price change were for our Gran Turismo 4 guides. They've been pennying out 1-2 guides at a time at a much more frequent rate recently, as opposed to 8-10 every couple months.

I rarely have trouble getting penny items at Best Buy. Almost all of their promotional items (CD's, etc) get dropped to a penny so cashiers rarely question when strategy guides ring up for a penny.
 
Heh, I wish you guys were around when I managed a Gamestop. I HATED throwing guides away when we pennied them out. I was always giving them away to customers and friends because it seemed like such a waste to throw them out. It's stupid to not sell them to people for $0.01 (or just give them away) since all we do with them is throw them away when no one wants them.

I'm in South CA BTW, and I'm willing to drive up to 30-40 miles one way to pick up guides :D

I only usually reach in and grab what I can get to. After I'm done, I clean my hands with some of that purell stuff and I wash my hands really good when I get home. I need to get one of those grabber things they make for old people and use that to reach in. This game store dumpster is pretty clean and they don't share it with other stores. If they shared a dumpster with the Chinese all-you-can-eat restaurant a few stores down, I would not even touch it. There's a reason I don't even bother with my game crazy's dumpster. They share it with a pet store that I think does grooming as well. The one EB/GS is the only one I really bother with. I'm very picky about which ones I'll look into.

I've been checking this one for awhile and I must have missed them throwing out the guides from the last drop. maybe you should live in there, that way there's no way you'll miss any guides being thrown away!

I have been able to get some great guides due to erehwon's pioneering spirit. Thanks again hopefully we can do another trade soon.
 
I'm absolutely loving my local BB's newer employees now, since they keep finding 'new' guides(that are pennied n should've been either tossed or whatever) and putting them back OUT on the floor.

They had 3 copies of the HL2: EP 1 guide at the Dickson City BB tonight, I grabbed 2. They also STILL have(shockingly) one copy of the Prey guide AND 2 Mage Knight Apocalypse guides sitting on the shelf.

Thanks to all who PMed me with offers for some guides I didn't get a chance to grab locally, if your guides aren't en route yet, they will be within the next couple days.

If anyone else wants to PM me regarding a guide trade, I've got a bajillion guides I'm looking to unload(13 or so copies of the old MGS 3 Snake Eater guide come to mind, along with excessive amounts of other guides).

I don't have an alphabetized list as of yet, but I do have them listed by quantity. So, if you're looking for an older drop guide that you may have missed and have either the guide for Mercenaries or certain other guides I'm looking for, PM me.

Well, I AM!!! The same GS I finally snagged a 4 Swords from last night(while buying MGS 2 and State Of Emergency, which I hated when I paid full price for it) also had a couple others I think, but I had those already.

Also, when I was at a GS later last night, I noticed theres a 'new and expanded' Oblivion guide out on their shelves, maybe this means the 'old' one IS PENNIED???

It's worth a shot. If anyone can confirm or deny it possibly being pennied, let the rest of CAG know(and credit me dammit lol).

EDIT: The reason I was at a GS later in the night was that the clerk gave me the DEMO version of MGS 2(which caused a DRE on my buddies brothers PS2) and I had to go get the non-CD version.
 
The OP has not been updated since July... Does anyone know of a list/post that can catch me up to the past few months of drops? I don't have the time to look back through all the pages so if anyone could help out if they already know, I'd be very grateful.

WAIT, you got Heroes Of Might & Magic V?? Where was that pennied? I know I've seen umpteen copies at my local BB and a buttload at the local GS stores. I just have to know, as its one of the newer guides I want a copy of.

I have noticed that too. My only guesses are that either some kind of system glitch, someone is trying to tell you that there is a trade list forum for trade lists or somebody doesn't like you. No offense intended thats just all I can think of.... Maybe there is a total text per thread limit and we have reached it. If That be the case then this post will ikely disappear as well.

I was gonna sit here n try n copy every drop list from the beginning, but I deleted my work to that end the one night. I think I had about 50 pages checked and kept finding mindless chatter on each page instead of actual drop lists(sort of like this post).

Now, if I actually weren't stuck in the Flintstones age still(dialup), I'd have had the speed to work on the thread update by now. Anyway, that's my two cents.

ya know i tried to do the same one night and there's just too many posts without anyone updating so you have do go thru all the mindless chatter. Kudos to you for trying to.

Btw, i forgot to mention that if you have a COMPUsa in your area i noticed 20% of the guides had a manger's special sticker marked at $4.99 each. No a penny drop so probably not for the "RE-SELLERS" in packs around here which seems like alot cuz i've been trying and trying to get City Heroes/Villians and Wow Atlas (cuz i play) but the few that have want to sell it to me at close to retail and i've only had one trade for different guides that i needed.
 
I'm looking for certain guides myself now, though some of these I once had(original Silent Hill dammit) and have become 'rare' since I had them. And well, I'm not willing to pay out the nose for guides that weren't considered 'in demand' a short while ago.

I only want them for the completeness of the quadrilogy. And, I'm still looking for the guide for Mercenaries and MAYBE Hulk Ultimate Destruction. I'll PM you a list, as I have a buttload of guides left from my days of guide hoarding. And trust me, they take up TONS of space, so I'm FINALLY trying to clear them out.
