07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. Managed to pick up the Mage Knight guide, though it took 30 minutes, and at first, they brought up the game. I corrected them and told them it was the guide, not the game. They couldn't find it anywhere, since it wasn't on the shelf nor supposedly in the back.

I did end up with it, thankfully.
 
does anyone know if any nyc stores have tekken 5. i know its a long shot but its worth a try...

I don't know if you are talking about Best Buy, but at my Best Buy they haven't even pennied out Morrowind guide. :(

Ummm, you DO know that Halo 2's guide FINALLY dropped at EB/GS, right?

As for it pennying at BB, lotsa luck, because as you said it disappeared from damn near EVERY BB. Trust me, I checked the two locally and when I was in Lafayette, NY about a month or two ago for an auto auction, I went to the Carousel Mall in Syracuse(10 miles away) and they had zip too.

As I joked with a couple EB/GS clerks about this same topic last night, it seemed like where BB eliminated ALL copies and mentions of the guide from their store AND site(I think), EB/GS seemed to end up having 7-10 copies PER store right afterwards.

AND, in a rare case of possibly being overly dilligent, it seems like my local BB has NO copies of ANY of the guides that're due to penny out on Monday in stock AT ALL.

Then again, they JUST reorganized the game dept AGAIN and eliminated the guide rack in the middle aisle leading between the music n game/dvd sections.

BTW, not to ramble on for TOO long but does anyone ELSES' EB/GS stores seem to be 'shifting' their shelves around about once a MONTH anymore? I ask because at least TWO of the local EB/GS stores seem to be doing so about that frequently lately.

EDIT: BTW Boys n Girls, when I had 3 guides PC'd n Chronicles of Narnia n EQ 2: Desert of Flame came up .01, I ended up in a convo with the clerk over what they're supposed to DO with pennied stuff. The clerks(at 2 EB/GS's locally last night) told me that the company is investigating their employees leaking information about the pennied guides n other stuff. So, I don't want to be a naysayer, but I seriously think the end of penny guides IS coming or at the least, it's going to be MUCH harder to find them pretty soon.

I've actually had more luck in the last few weeks (picking up the guides for Suikoden Tactics, Suikoden IV, DOA4, Tourist Trophy, Ace Combat Zero) at EB/GS then I had several months ago. Several employees didn't care when the guides rang up for a penny. A couple even said "These aren't supposed to be on the shelves, but I don't care, you can have them." One was even a manager. It probably helped that I did a preorder for FFXII at one location and bought a couple of used games at another location at the same time as buying the guides.

hmmmm, i hope someone hasn't asked this question already but does anyone know if fry's pennies their guides or something similar? i just got back but i was in a hurry so didn't have time to get someone to scan stuff.......i have one close by so that could be a good source of guides, i saw some god of war and others that have been pennied a while ago at other stores.

they are very very slow at droping guides. Many old guides are still full price (mario party 4). They even have some N64 and PSOne guides around. The only current generation guide that pennied out i think is Zone of Ender 1.

NOT me, I'm a true cheapskate. Unless I really wanna try a game and have credit, I don't buy or preorder CRAP.

Either way, I'm VERY upfront about the guides anymore. I don't believe in buying crap I don't want, just to maybe 'hide' a potential penny guide buy.

And, I HAVE walked out with NOTHING before when I brought up guides that I knew were pennied and something else, when the clerks didn't wanna sell the guides for .01.

However, I did buy Godfather(limited edition) for Xbox last night when I had 2-3 guides PC'd(Fable: Lost Chapters, 2 other I don't remember). I guess F: LC is going to be like the non-dvd God Of War and both versions of the San Andreas guide and refuse to drop for a long, long time.

I think there's only one version of the Hitman: Blood Money guide made by Prima. It covers all the consoles and the PC.

Not 100% on this, but pretty confident there is only version of this guide, at least that I've seen.

Went yesterday and hid all the copies througout the store, and sure enough they were waiting for me today.

The thing about it is that they are VERY strict about pulling the copies on the day that they are supposed to be pulled, so if I didn't do this, I'd be SOL.

Sorry if anyone thinks this is a dick move, but it's either I get them or no one would have.

Prey X360 (x6 - one for me, 5 for trade)

I went to my local BB(Dickson City, PA) tonight, figuring they would've pulled all of the current penny guides from the shelf. I WAS WRONG!! Not only did they still have the 2 other copies of Mage Knight: Apocalypse that I left there the other day when I grabbed my two, but they mysteriously had two copies of the OLD Godfather guide out front now. AND 3 copies of the guide for Prey, of which I grabbed 2.

I grabbed:

2x Godfather
2x Prey(it's marked X360/PC on the front cover in small writing)

I left:

2x Mage Knight: Apocalypse
1x Prey

I'd be willing to trade even for a copy of Hitman: Blood Money's guide(they had copies there on Sat when I went but I didn't 'stash' any) for a copy of Prey's guide.

I know my other 'local' BB(20 miles away) probably yanked all their guides already or I'd head there tomorrow after going to vote to check out their stock.

Also, it seems I NEVER find a good spot to hide guides. I hid a copy of TR: Legends guide, since I thought that would drop and they found it. I stashed it behind one of those huge 'sound system' boxes(for consoles). The ones they almost ALWAYS have at the end of the PS2 aisle.

I hid my guides behind a stack of splinter cell guides. That's not as deceitful as hiding it somewhere outside its normal area :)
 
Just like i promised a week ago, the guides did all drop, i myself grabbed at least 2 of each that had dropped. Suprising best score was the huge cheat book, girlfriend loves it. Will keep posted of future drops as soon as i get the notice.
 
Hmm... might as well go see if I can snag a copy of BfME2 for PC, even though I probably won't get the game for a year or so.

Annoying to stop checking this thread for a week and see a bunch of drops occur.

If it already hasn't been mentioned: World of WarCraft: Atlas is a penny.

I tried to buy a couple at a store that had (7!), but stupid ass employees at a new Best Buy store gave me every excuse in the book. One guy even told me the prices are what's marked, not what it rings up as. This thing is cover priced $34.99, oversized and comes wrapped in plastic with some kind of bookmark(?). It also has 4 different UPCs. I checked two other stores and couldn't find it so good luck to anyone looking for it.

Agreed, my props to you as well. It looks like my local BB is starting to pull guides so the extra advance notice was very helpful for pre-drop stashing.
 
I would be interested in the guides for Kotor and Kotor II if anyone has these please check my trade list or send me a PM.

I also doubt it but if for some reason the Elder Scrolls Oblivion guides get pennied out I would be interested in that one too.. :)
