07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. Well, I was fortunate enough to get about roughly 40 older guides yesterday from a GS. I asked the manager if she had any older guides laying around in back and she said "yes I do. They're all used though." I guess she had a bunch leftover from when they used to take in used guides. I asked to see them and she grabbed a bunch for me. All of them were .99 each. However, since they're used they qualify for the B2G1 sale! I ended up getting them for an average of .50 apiece. Now, what guides were they?

They didn't have any out but I snagged a copy of it at the Hamilton Mall about 10 miles away, while my one friend sat at the Trump Marina and played. Both Hamilton Mall EB stores had COD: BRO and a couple other guides that just recently pennied.

Besides that, yesterday was a varitable gold mine. From that same mall in Hamilton Township, NJ, I snagged:

From the Target near the Hamilton Mall, I grabbed 1x MGS: Subsistence(spine is shot, broken in mid guide)

From the Best Buy in Springfield, PA(just past the last toll booth on the PA turnpike) I grabbed:

5x Metroid Prime Hunters

I left 2x Xmen Official Game and 1x NFS: Most Wanted

From the EB/GS store in Springfield Mall, I grabbed Call Of Duty:Big Red One and their only copy of PS2 GTA: SA guide.

Again, THE HALO 2 GUIDE IS PENNIED!!!!! GO GO GO GO!!!!!

Also possibly of note, the same clerk who told me the Halo 2 guide pennied said they haven't received copies of Morrowinds guide in forever. It could ALSO be pennied, unless it was already.

Actually, I'm not Pooky, as it was a trip to Atlantic City and MOST of the places, I stopped ON THE WAY DOWN. Springfield is right off the 'blue route' once you go through that last toll plaza down in Philly area(where I think 95, 476, etc seem to 'merge').

And, yeah, I went back about 10-12 miles from AC while she played at Trump Marina to the Hamilton Township shopping district(Hamilton Mall, Best Buy, Target, etc.), but in NO WAY was it a large out of the way trip.

I definitely DON'T go on road trips specifically looking for guides anymore, unless I drop off a relative or friend or two at a casino or slot parlor or something and I KNOW I'll be bored sitting there waiting for them AND usually, I won't go more than a half dozen exits before turning around.

Like, tomorrow morning, I'm supposed to 'chauffeur' several relatives to Tioga Downs in NY state and while they're there, I'm heading to the Arnot Mall up the road about 30ish miles or so.

No sense in me sitting there, being bored, while they play on the machines AND I'm just too much of a cheapskate to waste money on THAT kind of gaming with no guaranteed return for me.

They mark them down from $1-5 usually, YMMV and a different price at each store. Only way to know is to have them scanned...but in my experience if they aren't marked with a clearance tag, they usually are on clearance, since guides are the only gaming clearance deals at CC that are usually manager's specials.

They tend to give a forward notice to stores more often around the holidays, i remember last year they did the same for guide drops, and even the post-holiday game clearence. So i'll be sure to let any and all know as soon as i find out.

I told you it was going to go down, what is wierd though was there was no warning at all on the half life 2 or mage knight guides dropping. What is wierd though, was i just went to grab my stores copies of mage knight and they had a 1 cent sticker on them already. This game got checked in and was already a penny. Wierd stuff

I saw a Castlevania guide for N64 at CompUSA yesterday. The cover was torn but was only .88 cents. Passed on it since I wasnt sure if it was worth it even at that price point.

I ordered two Half Life 2 Ep 1 guides and a Mage Knight guide for in-store pickup for 2 cents (buy 2, get 1 free "software" offer on the site - remember that if ordering online for in-store pickup!).

Before I pick up my purchase I nab the last two HL guides off the shelves and get them for 2 cents. I then pick up the other two guides at customer service. Turns out they falsely reported that the items were ready for pick up.

I wait about 10-15 mins while they look around the store and in the back, and at that point I was about to walk out. I'm glad I didn't.

The CS rep returns with two copies of Half Life 2: Episode 1, the full game, and one copy of Mage Knight: Apocolypse. I couldn't believe my freakin' luck and somehow, I was only charged 1 cent for all three. I gladly signed my receipt and off I went.

Funny thing is my 1 cent credit card charge went much further than the 2 cent guide purchases I made moments earlier (I found the pennies en route to BB.)

I wonder if my purchasing of the last two HL guides threw them off...

This penny guide run was quite profitable for me. Things are looking up, especially since my BB seems to keep a good stock of penny guides around (I hid the guides that will drop on Monday.)

Now that I have the guides, I might bundle them with the games and put 'em up for sale.
