Just had a burger with "the works" at Burger Joint and it was effing delicious. My favorite used to be at 5 Napkin Burger but I think this may have been better... it was the third time I've been to Burger Joint and by far the best burger I've had there. Any other recommendations? I like Burger Heaven and a couple others I can't think of right now...

My arteries hardened just LOOKING at that picture...thanks....
I hear the Shake Shack is worth the wait, never been willing to brave the line to find out.
Shake Shack is just about as good as In-and-Out to me. It was pretty damn great.

One of those just opened near me. I'll have to give it a go sometime.

I've never understood the fuss about In-N-Out. I've tried it several times when out West for business etc., and it just seems like pretty standard fast food burger to me.

Five Guys still gets my vote for best fast food burger, decent quality beef for fast food and all the topping options make a huge difference. By I seldom get fast food. If I'm going to eat unhealthy and have a burger, I'd rather just go all out and get a high quality burger at a sit down joint--preferably a local place, but in a pinch a chain like Red Robin or Cheeburger, Cheeburger.

The wait at the Battery Park location isn't bad at all. And right around the corner from a movie theater so you can do a dinner and a movie combo.

Agreed. I was out in San Jose last week and tried In N Out for the first time and was greatly underwhelmed. Sure it was good, but amazingly great like people make it out to be? No way.

That Krispy Kreme burger looks fucking disgusting.

Agree to disagree on In-n-Out it's pretty fucking great IMO.

Never had five guys though, been wanting to try it for a while.

I rarely eat fast food other than Subway which barely counts.

yeah, Shake Shack and Five Guys are really good burgers but I was thinking more along the lines of a "real" burger and not something that I associate with fast food even though they are clearly in a class (way) above Burger King and McDonalds...

Seriously, Old Town. It's a real fucking burger and it's real fucking good (they also have bison burgers). Served in one of the oldest bars in the city.

I will put it on the list. Next time I'm out I'll give it a try.

You refer to Red Robin as a "high-quality burger" yet you don't get the fuss about In-N-Out? I'd say you've got your stories mixed up. Any place that asks "Pink or no pink?" like Red Robin is far from quality.
Hmmm... sounds good in theory but I don't like bacon at all so that's not going to work...
You sir just lost your man card.
Hmmm... sounds good in theory but I don't like bacon at all so that's not going to work...
well that makes your original question pointless then since no burger without bacon could ever be considered the best in any location

I'm the reverse. Love In-N-Out but can't believe 5 guys is mentioned in the same breath. By far, the greasiest, sloppiest hamburger I've ever had. Insta- stomach ache. It is like a meatball on a wet bun.

There is a joint that started here (they are all over now) that I really like - Smashburger that is awesome

edit: looks like they have a few NYC locations

It's actually really good. I had one at the fair, and I thought it was going to be nasty, but it was delicious. It really was the best burger I ever had. Who knew onions and donuts would taste good together?

It wasn't overly filling either, I had a deep-fried Snickers, afterwards.

Yea tried both and Five Guys and was worst. I tried In and Out before it was that popular and without the expectation some of you guys might have.

Ted's Montana Grill has a great Bison Burger. Not sure about the reg. burgers because all I get there is Bison

I also found this..

Red Robin isn't great by any means, and pales behind the best local burger places in any city for sure.

I just hate fast food burgers with their crappy little thing greasy hamburger patties.

I like places where you get a thick slab of burger like you'd make yourself if grilling burgers at home. Not little thin slabs of low-grade, high fat greasy ass beef that you get at all fast food places be it McDonalds, In and Out or Five Guys (with the latter being slightly better quality beef, but still to thin and greasy--as I said the toppings make the difference there).

But I'm far from a burger lover. I honestly don't care much for red meat anymore, so I probably have a burger 5 times a year or less anyway. As for Bacon, I like it but seldom eat it since it's so terrible for you.

Shake Shack, Corner Bistro, Burger Joint, PJ Clark's and last but not least Old Town Bar.

Also In-and-Out is way better than Five Guys.
It would be hard to top a five guys burger with grilled onions and mushrooms.
In and Out 4x4 animal style with fries and a shake.

33 replies and not one mention of How I Met Your Mother? :) Anyway, just checking this thread out. I don't live in NY, but I can't wait to go back, and burgers are one of my favorite foods.

Bacon, Goldschläger and Taco Bell? Sounds like a winning combination if you ask me. Mmmm. Bacon.

I wanted to, but all the youtube vids are just static shots that say "youtube won't let me load illegally recorded full episodes so go to my questionable website instead." And I didn't have time to look up pictures.

Anyway... I do love a good burger, so I consider this my 'where to eat if I ever go to NY' thread.

I really like the roquefort burger at Rue57 on 57th at 6th (www.rue57.com). Here's a link to a New Yorker magazine review of NY's best places to eat in all sorts of categories: http://nymag.com/bestofny/food/

And NYMag's best burgers: http://nymag.com/bestofny/food/2007/28755/

Oh, also, when Grill'Em All Foood Truck is in NY their Behemoth Burger is awesome.

*edit- also Jackson Hole and Firehouse both have great burgers and multiple locations throughout the city. Not necessarily the "best" but worth eating. If you're at Firehouse, get a plate of Firehouse Nachos and a pitcher of margarita to go with it.

Try Five Guys again, that was a fluke. Definitely as good or better than In -N- Out (although I do love some of the secret menu shit, like Mustard Grill )

Not in NYC but only a short train ride away - the best burger I've ever had.
