In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

It is not that hard for BB to figure out what people are trading in. All they need to do is set in their system to automatically drop the price by X dollar once they got X number of copies traded in.

while we're a little OT, its funny that i just got an email from gamestop saying that my local GS is having a 50% trade in bonus. apparently, its because there's a best buy about 100 yards away from it.

At first, I didn't think the nightly Gamefly deals were significant enough for BB to pay attention to them. There have been a few minor drops of games that have been included over the last couple weeks but no real tanking of TIVs. All of the decent deals from Wednesday's GF deals dropped tonight:

Just Dance 2 $15 --> $9
Killzone 3 $20 --> $9
RDR :ps3: $13 --> $8

Meanwhile RDR:360:, which wasn't in the sale, stayed the same. Sure, Just Dance 3 just came out today, so a drop for Just Dance 2 might have been expected, but the JD games have kept their value remarkably well over the last year and that is a pretty big drop for a game that still sells well. These orders from Gamefly wouldn't have shipped until Thursday, so in all likelihood, the vast majority of people haven't even received their orders. Yet the TIVs for those specific games tank. I don't think there is any doubt that they are watching more closely.

All the games that were decent flips for Gamefly dropped within 4 days of the sale, just enough time for a good amount of people to flip the games they got.

Except those Wednesday flips wouldn't have shipped from GF until Thursday, so unless you live within a couple hundred miles of the specific shipping center your order was sent from, most people probably didn't receive their orders Friday.
they're still tryna make their money back
 I miss HWV the most outta all of the chains we've lost in the last 5 years or so, since their $5 used game sales were awesome to grab stuff from to dump on GS and probably woulda been good for BB flipping too.;)

if you order so many games, they just ship via priority for free I found, which is 2-3 days shipping. So order wednesday, most people would have it saturday, then sunday it would end up dropping.

After reaching 100+ PS3 games in my collection, I find it pointless to have all these newer games sitting around while TIV drops and drops. I'm going to take quite a few of them and trade it in best buy/Amazon. Sigh, totally sad to see my babies going. I hope their next owner take care of them as much as I took care of them haha

Yeah, drops are real harsh. Sucks. But I expected it. It seems like this thread has had a surge in "flip talk" for the last ten pages or so. No doubt someone from Best Buy corporate is at least eying this thread. I don't know why stuff like Transformers DotM needed to be mentioned some 20+ times in the last day or so, but I digress...

Like I said, I turned about $45 into $85. Not bad. Could have done more, but 1) I didn't want to hoard too much and take away from people that actually want these games, 2) I don't wanna bug my BB guys too much, and 3) Don't trust Gamefly's shipping times.

Probably could have made a fair bit more, but I just wasn't *feeling* it as much this week. I imagine after the holidays we're going to get a lot of 3x value flips, what with sales going on a demand still being strong.

Anyhoo... saw that there is no confirmed 50% for next week in the ad, but my guys said that they WERE going to run that next week for Batman. I'd take it with a grain of salt, though.

I really want a 50% because there are some small flips I want to do and the extra 10% makes removing the shrinkwrap more tolerable. lol

Everyone here probably got in on the Transformers flip, so it's not really a big deal to complain that it finally dropped. Although I pulled a dumb shit moment and traded in my pilotwings instead of dark of the moon 3ds. doh.

You can reject your shipment if you really wanted to.

The more realistic thing would be that dozens of stores had a surge in trade ins for transformer games and the reports showed it. So they probably got more then or at least as many as they wanted or needed and changed it. This is called business. Did CAG speed it up? Possibly. But bottom line is it showed up for them in the system and reports and maybe a call or two from the store managers.
Just business as usual don't fret about it so much.

lol!

fuck should of listened to everyone telling me noot to wait till saturday. I apologize if I mentioned transformers too much lately. As for a forum or thread just for discussing flips, theres no point. People are still going t find a way in just to find out TIV and abuse it like the way its going now.

To be honest trading at Best Buy has already gone downhill, between the lack of consistency and the fact that employees at multiple stores in my area take soo long to process everything (it shouldn't take me 30 mins to trade 5 games)

After this horrible 5 preorders for $100 which is not going to end well for anyone I'm gonna stick to preordering elsewhere ... fuck this!
Transformers autobots $14
Black ops xbox $23

Why not just pay it? You'd have already gotten back $6 and would be profiting after using one coupon.

This is the best post! Answer to the first question: cause they dont want to lose any more money. The risk part of the risk reward equation just reared it's head! Thinning the heard can be a good thing.

Thank you. It is amazing to me that people have an expectation that best buy, gamestop and amazon are all supposed to be everyone's personal bitches. How dare these companies not bend over so that we can abuse them on a daily basis.

as I listen to the valkyria chronicles main theme on my phone (this soundtrack still gets me choked up) I Hope the tiv's don't drop more. They must have been alarmed by all of those transformers flips
Thank you. It is amazing to me that people have an expectation that best buy, gamestop and amazon are all supposed to be everyone's personal bitches. How dare these companies not bend over so that we can abuse them on a daily basis.
Exactly. As long as they give good trade in values for games, I'm ok with them not giving away ridiculous money just so people can trade in 15 copies of a game.

Ah, dang it--looks like I won't be picking up those DotM titles now from GS. It's not really that big of a deal to me, since I wouldn't have been able to make it to BB yesterday anyway.

I do wish I had known about them before Thursday, though, since I would have been able to stop by BB on my way home. #-o

Off topic question, Im planning on gettin the iphone4S from BB, can i use my gift card for that or they will bill it to my AT&T account??? thanks

i still have everything locked in but was hoping for 162, not 120... oh wellz.(2kz3/4crysis2)
i was hoping with everyone talking about everygame that is flippable, high tiv's would last forever.../

Amazon tiv swing wildly, http://tivtrackr.com/search?q=killzone+3 ,it might go back up. I'm just gonna wait it out if i can't sell for $20 each. Kz3 and JD2 would be my 1st - trade, had a nice + streak going. Oh well, the ride was exciting.
If you look at pics http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=303170&page=2 , might be the reason why kz3 is so low and crysis 2 drop. Congrats btw, I would do the same.

lol, nice dig sir. Maybe we should start a private flip club. I don't mind sharing if other peep did the same.

I'm sitting on more kz3, crysis2, +jd2 than you, so don't feel bad.

In theory I agree with you, but if you consider the 12 you get from Gazelle, the 10 from Amazon and the 9 or so you get from Gamestop is it really a little low or was it just too high to begin with?
Looks like someone takes the boards a little to seriously
Yeah but the original statement is kinda dumb. The price is the price. Unless you're the one running the algorithm, how could you even say "I think the price drop is too much."

"Hey, wall street, I think the Dow dropped too much today. I wouldn't have dropped it that far!"

I'll join the flip club :) where do I sign ?

God I feel fucking stupid for not locking in the price on KZ3 online. Such a drastic dip in TIV. I think I can manage to sell at least one of my 2 copies to a friend, but still, it hurts lol. I quit fucking around and locked all my other games in though, lesson learned I guess.

Yea but calling people newbs and whatnot (more than once on this thread) ? We are grown adults here just talking about trade ins. Save that "newb" talk for cod

it sucks cuz you wont get any bonus, but at least break even or minimal profit. cry2 n kz3 were all still 15->20, so i guess im still +30, but i hate sending stuff in, takes forever compared to just instore.
This big tiv drop and then dropping the 4/$20 promo really put a cramp in my style this week. oh wellz

He's right. Things would run a lot smoother if people didn't constantly assume were the ones getting in on this, considering the lurkers, and asshole CAG who just watch thread like a hawk waiting for people to drop flips.

In theory, things go a lot better with a private, invite only thread. This cuts a lot of the shit we have to deal with here. No lurkers, No one staring at their screen, waiting for flips, and never posting, No dumbasses who can't read the first page of the thread and ask a million of the same questions because using the search function is too difficult. If we turned this back into the TIV only thread as in No posting of flips, and use the private thread for our addiction we take this out of the public eye, (as in, an unnamed CAG referenced us on the best buy forums) Just a thought.

But hey, maybe I'm just taking this too seriously, right?
