Best Buy YMMV Thread

mikeshinobi

CAGiversary!
Can we have a thread where we share deals we find at our local Best Buys? Of course they're always YMMV but it would give us ideas of what to look out for.

I have two local best buys and each of them had different deals:

Best Buy #1:

  • Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW): $15.99
Best Buy #2:

  • Disgaea 4 (NSW): $15.99
  • Dead Cells (NSW): $10.99
  • Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS): $12.99 (didn't get this, very sad)
  • Some other 3DS title I was extremely sad I missed out on (3DS): $10.99
There were some others but these were the ones that stood out the most that I can remember.

Also for anyone who doesn't know, if your Best Buy has a price placard out for a game but they're sold out, you can ask an employee to order it for you from their website and they will match their in-store price! Of course they have to have stock on the website though.

I am enjoying Suice Squad. Little tough learning 4 different traversal styles, but I am enjoying the story (other than the missions that require you to damage enemies only using gernades because you can only carry 3 at a time and have to juggle others to get them to drop more gernades). Granted the battle system of Gotham Knights was more fun. Still trying to wrap my head around the fact this one focuses more on gunplay than melee.

I have maybe a stupid question. Has anyone tried to price match two of the same item, on different days, via Best Buy chat? Their chat last night said they could only price match one item. Was thinking about trying again today and just making a second order.

Try it and report back. Even if they say no on the second day, at least you get one of what you want, right?

Best Buy‘s logistics must suck. The Princess Peach game is getting delivered by FedEx but the acrylic stand bonus is getting delivered by ‘Roadie’ out of a local store. Both arriving today.

I signed up for My Best Buy Plus when they were running the B2G1Switch game deal last June. They obviously stopped that promotion after a few months but I decided to stay a member to see if any other good deals happened (which they really didn't). Anyway my subscription is set to auto-renew on June 27th so I figured I would post it here to remind people that joined around when I did and didn't cancel, that they will be auto-renewing soon. I'll give it a few more days to see if they announce any more promotions, but will most likely be canceling by the 26th of the month.

If I have an open order with b2g1 switch games, do I need to be a member when the final game ships? Have one game left and would hate for that order to be adjusted after the fact to full price for all three games if I cancel. Last game ships in July.

Good question, I have no idea. Might be worth staying a member at least until that game ships. They will give you a prorated amount back if you cancel the subscription early.

There is a promo right now where if you spend $150 $125 on eligible titles til around the end of June, you get $50 reward or something. You do have to activate it, and the progress tracks in their app. I have been debating on getting Elden Ring DLC version there, which would be more than half of the way there. But I don't remember if I have the base game still, or I could just get the DLC itself digitally.

Edit: Oh huh, it was $125.

There should be a current promotion in your account for spend $125 on qualifying video games, get a $50 rewards certificate. Good through June 30, but you must activate it before purchasing anything. Not good on preorders, but eshop, PS and Steam cards qualify,

The terms of the offer said you had to be a member when each item ships. That was part of my reasoning not to bother with this service in the first place as game release dates change and I didn't want to be on the hook for a renewal. For myself, skipping the subscription worked out pretty well.

Yeah with the prorated refund on the renewal it won't be that big of a deal for me. The membership has more than paid for itself. I think I did at least 5 b2g1 switch sets. The 15% off game currency was great while it lasted. Free 2 day shipping and 60 day returns has also been really nice. The $50 reward on gaming purchases mentioned above is also pretty awesome. But yeah not super worth it if you aren't a switch gamer.

I am a Switch gamer and for me personally, it still wasn't worth it. For the most part, with few exceptions, I've still managed to get the games I've wanted at the prices I was looking for, and for those I haven't it's likely just a matter of a waiting game. As for game currency Dollar General runs a 15% offer off every now and then without the need for a paid membership. Target also periodically does a B1G1 15% off on gaming gift cards, which after Red Card comes out to a little over 12% off. It's not 15% but it's close enough and Red Card is free. Free shipping and an extra 30 days on returns.... also complimentary with Red Card. So I've managed to do just fine without succumbing to Best Buy's desperate attempts at pushing their paid membership programs. Funny how the B2G1 free on Switch games they were using as a selling point to push it vanished soon thereafter. I knew they would figure out a way to yank the rug out from under folks after they got their money or that something else would similarly 'go wrong' in a way that would compromise people's purpose for signing up in the first place. Anyway, bottom line is they can't be trusted to not constantly move the goal posts, which is why I was very skeptical of it all to begin with.

Yeah, I refrained from signing up for Plus since, despite being a Switch gamer, I knew it'd compel me to buy more games than I needed. At the time, I was looking into games like Mario RPG, Persona 5 Tactica, and Pikmin 1/2, but I ended up getting Mario for free due to a Target glitch (they price matched it back when it was $40 at Staples, then canceled and refunded my order after I had already picked it up, and I didn't say a damn word), I got Tactica for $20, and I passed on Pikmin since I have 1 on Gamecube and 2 on the Wii. I know I pre-order too many games, so while the Plus deal was tempting, it wouldn't actually help the wallet (or the backlog) in the long run. Also, having to renew the membership to ensure my pre-orders went through was not appealing to me.

God, I miss GCU.

The vast majority of games I buy are on Switch (rarely a PS4/PS5 game... typically Yakuza related). But I managed to get Mario Vs DK & Super Mario RPG for $35 each from Gamefly. Princess Peach, IMO, turned out to be a dud. Glad I wasn't locked in for that. I don't think I even want it if it hits $20 or $30 where as I did get Yoshi Crafted Story when Walmart had it for $30 during a BF event. Yoshi felt more challenging (and relaxing) with it's hide and seek gameplay. Fire Emblem Engage and Star Ocean Second Story R I ended up getting at Walmart for $20 each. Miitopia, I tracked down for $30... though I can't remember if it sold out before the original BB deal was up. I had been wanting a deal for that for a while. I likely would have gotten a few other games to maximize the "deal" that I ended up skipping... thus saved me from buying things just because. Other deals I got, like SMT:V ($20) & Persona 5 Royal ($25)... I'm pretty happy with those prices. I think Super Mario Wonder was the only one I would have preordered that I ended up paying full price for, but I'm sure the balance sheet works out that I did pretty good. My only somewhat disappointing purchase (so far, as I haven't played everything I've bought) is Mario Vs Donkey Kong. NOT that it's a bad game... it's just I have the original still and while I have a lot of Nostalgic love for it (and the GB version of Donkey Kong), I didn't really need to replay it as much as I liked the idea of replaying it. I could have just played the GBA version I still own. I finished all the + mode levels off already and only have most of the Expert levels before I've done everything except time attack (which I'm not big on time attack, so I may skip it). Still, it sells for around $35 to $40 before ebay fees. So if I opt to sell it, I could recoup most of what I spent.

The BB deal was good for those buying ALOT of games and don't want to wait for reviews and deals to pop up later. I'm sure it worked out well for those that took serious advantage. Especially for those who were doing it as a side hustle.

I’ve had an open preorder with BB for Metroid Prime 4, since Feb 2021; back when they’re deals were 20% off games. Now that the game seems to be back on schedule, it has been delisted and the order has vanished from my history. Should I assume I won’t be getting my discount?

I would assume that.

I don’t regret signing up for it, I got a decent amount of value with the first party titles I was able to get with buy2,get 1 that weren’t available on Target deals.

That having been said, without the buy2,get 1 for Switch games, I see absolutely no benefit of continuing my subscription. The deals just aren’t that great to justify $50 a year on, and with them not carrying physical movies anymore I don’t even get much benefit out of the faster shipping.

I’m not mad at Best Buy or anything, I’m just bummed that a store I used to love going to is circling the drain with such a whimper. And yeah, I do fully believe at this point they aren’t long for this world. They don’t have much to differentiate themselves anymore. Deals are getting matched left and right, physical stores are closing or dramatically reducing their floor inventory, it’s just a bummer this is how it’s gonna end. Basically, I’ve reached the acceptance phase of grief at this point.

BB is still my preferred place to buy games. If there is a deal at multiple stores online, I'm always leaning for BB first (and I typically buy enough to get free shipping) because I know what I order, I will get. There's no third party shenanigans to watch out for and they (so far) haven't been bad about cancelling anything I order. The nearest store is an hour a way, so I don't have that much love for the physical store itself. Sometimes prices were decent in store and there were good deals, but I felt most of the time they were just as expensive or sometimes more expensive than other stores for DVD/BR releases. I feel the same about Target. None nearby. They used to be good for the occasional red tag clearance games, but for the rest of the media section was typically retail and felt over priced for most dvd/br. Walmart would be my second choice as those stores are nearby... but ordering online, I don't care for having to pay attention to who the seller is.

I hope if BB does have issues, they don't stop doing the website. Stores are alreay shifting to do more online order fulfilment... and that makes a lot of sense to me. The days of the mega media phsyical store with great deals are gone. Circuit City fell. Others did as well. Hopefully BB shifting more and more online keeps them around for at least another decade or two. They certainly have my business, even though I will not pay for a subscription to a store.

Oh, you’re absolutely correct about 3rd party shenanigans. Best Buy has been my go to for so many things that I could have bought on Amazon because of their absolute garbage policy of mixing stock and potentially getting counterfeits or foreign versions of games. I think every memory card I’ve bought for the last few years has been from Best Buy because I can trust their inventory.

Believe me, for so many reasons I wish it was Amazon I was more pessimistic about their future than Best Buy.

I got my value out of BB’s membership but for me, most of it was in Disney GC discounts. They offered 10% off multiple times and I have a credit card that give 5% back on electronics stores. We have a Disney timeshare so 15% off annual dues is nice. Plus we used the GCs on our Disney trip this year for food & lightning lanes.

gift card discounts are always good. If you live in a state with a Meijer they offer 20% back in rewards a few times a year also. You can prepare for your vacation and get 20% back for your groceries.

It’s a prorated refund, LESS benefits. My membership renews tomorrow so I went to the cancellation page and that’s what I’m seeing. So if you let it renew and cancel after the last game ships you may not be getting the amount back that you expected.

Anyone figure out when we get that $50 cert?

If you did the spend $125 on games to get a $50 certificate, you may have to contact support. The fine print said deposed approximately 15 days after transaction. I am over three weeks so I did support today. Lady said I have an "inactive" certificate so she activated it. Sounds like BS but hopefully the cert appears tomorrow.

Contacted Best Buy via chat earlier today and they told me they just activated it and it will show up in a few hours. Over 3 hours later, nothing. Oh to top it off, they told me the expiration date is tomorrow!

Finally got around to contacting support again. Online support couldn't solve it so they had me call 1-888-237-8289. The lady there said she did it, but I didn't let her hang up while I checked. No dice. She tried a second time and it showed. PITA.

I must be an idiot because I can't find where I'd contact support on the website?
you are not an idiot, everyone is hiding their links to support online. easiest way is to wait for the circle to pop up in the bottom right and click on that. usually shows up for me if i add something to cart and sit there a while. if they think you are trying to spend money but having problems they suddenly want to help.
