Best Square or Enix or Square Enix game thats not a Final Fantasy?
Star Ocean 2, unique battle system, entertaining story.
That's actually a tri-Ace game, and was published by Enix.. so it doesn't really fit what the OP is asking for.

Still a kickass game, however.

I love Einhander too. I picked it up at a Blockbuster for 10 bucks like 3-4 years ago.

What blows is that they just gave me the CD with no cover, and it had that blockbuster sticker on it >=/

Here's my favs, in no real order:

-Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu series
-Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross
-Brave Fencer Musashi / Samurai Legend Musashi
-Einhander
-EVO: Search for Eden
-Illusion of Gaia (published by Nintendo and Enix)
-Kingdom Hearts / KH: Chain of Memories / Kingdom Hearts 2
-Valkyrie Profile
-Drakengard 1 & 2
-Super Mario RPG

Honest answer - almost everything Square and Enix put out on the SNES that wasn't Final Fantasy was good for the most part.

And yea, I did enjoy Secret of Evermore, and even FF Mystic Quest had some redeeming qualities (i.e there has been alot worse).

You can't go wrong just picking a random SE game from the NES / SNES periods.

As soon as any of them ever show up on the VC I'll go crazy with joy.

Not to condone d/l'ing... but you can get some wonderful classic games for free online :)
I'm not sure if it's allowed, but if you can find English Subbed Bahamut Lagoon, or Treasure Hunter G... those are 2 great games.

PS1, Xenogears without a doubt! Bushido Blade's alright, along with Tobal #1.

PS2,.... I don't think there was one must have, or even kind of a decent game for the system. Of course I hate Xenosaga.

Good luck.

The Bouncer was a genre that had a to of potential and played great, but sadly died due to lack of length and interesting plot.

Also, FFXI would be at the top of my list if the length of doing anything was cut in half.

Chrono Trigger is probably the best Square game. Secret of Mana is also up there. I like both because the stories are actually quite simple and straight forward. Sequels to both games got a lot more complicated - Crono Cross and Seiken Densetsu 3 had zero charm.

Soulblazer was an awesome enix game. The graphics are pretty ugly today but it's still fun. The music in the beginning level is burned into my brain.
Hands down.

Isn't it "Chrono Trigger" though? And the main characters name is Crono?
Yes it is and I'm guilty of also correcting the same typo.:dunce:
Yeah it was but it wasn't nearly as good as Chrono Trigger (though it had a better soundtrack). What I want is a third Chrono game that's more like Tigger then Cross.
WRONG! "Radical Dreamers" on the BS-X is the direct sequel and is even referenced by the name of Kidd's group so you xhave a 3rd game. Unfortunately the direct sequel is entirely text based,
As for games I'd say ANYTHING from Enix on the SNES was underappreciated especially and "Robotrek" serves as an excellent before game to Pokemon IF it came out before like I suspect. Btw wtf is "Actraiser 3" already?!
You're kidding right Rolento? "The Bouncer" was solid in terms of plot and the action wasn't bad, though it was nowhere near worth $50. Also "The Bouncer" was one of the few Square games that didn't suffer from heavy jaggy syndrome. Let's HOPE FFXIII doesn't suffer from ANY jaggies. If it does I would suggest Square hire some people from Sega to show them how to program.

That sounds more like a spin off then a sequel.

Secret of Mana is the best one ever released. After that you have other excellent games like SoulBlazer and ActRaiser. And you can include the Final Fantasy games in that as well since those three blow away any FF game.
Valkyrie was originaly a square title. :?:
Valkyrie Profile is a tri-Ace game. As with the other tri-Ace games, Enix (and now SquareEnix) publishes them.

Hands down Drakengard 1 and 2 , infusing such a strong story into a hack N slash was brilliant, I actually cared what was going to happen. And speaking of stories, they had to be Square-Enix's darkest story to date, between the baby eating in the first to the child beating screw redemption i'll make you suffer theme the second had going it really made me want to keep playing just to see what would happen next.

even their Japanese SNES games are amazing. Seiken Densetsu 3, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasue Hunter G are all worth playing. The PSOne days overall are very good. It is really PS2 era they made real crap like Driving Emotion Type-S.

Xenogears. It's my favorite video game, bar none. I love the Xenosaga games on the PS2 also, but those are published by Namco.

You're not suppose to mention "Treasure Hunter G" even if it's gppd. That's their Black Sheep.

Brave Fencer Musashi... Such a great game... too bad Musashi: Samurai Legend wasn't nearly as good...
I have a question. Everyone who chose Chrono Trigger, did you actually beat Xenogears?

I
I did....I still prefer Chrono Trigger.

I liked Xenosaga, but....there were too many cutscenes, IMHO. That, combined with the fact I'm not a "big mech universe" fan. I played it, and beat it, because people raved about it. And I did enjoy it, a LOT. But not as much as I enjoyed CT.
I was talking about Xenogears, not Xenosaga.

Parasite Eve. At least at the time it was really good, but the gameplay is probably pretty dated by now. It's shorter and has a cool story though.

I think that Illusion of Gaia for the SNES is definately one of the best non-FF game, besides Chrono Trigger of course. I hope both these games become availible to download on the Wii's virtual console.
I was talking about Xenogears, not Xenosaga.
And I meant xenogears and not xenosaga. I Fat fingered it.

Ps1 era (well, really, seemed like 16 bit era, but...), guy named Fei is the MC, used the same ATB2 that CT used. The martial arts combat was good..the gears combat not so much (IMHO...again, remembering I'm not a huge "big robot" fan). Uneven pacing, Too many cutscenes starting with the end of disk 1 (if I remember right...the whole "storybook" thing....) and a frustratingly inaccessible world map on disk 2. The story was awesome (if a bit preachy, at times), and overcame all of that.

Again, I liked it a lot....but IMHO CT was better.

Woo! Another Drakengard fan! :D

Did you get the 5th hidden ending on the first game?
That was hands down one of the coolest extras I've ever seen in a game!
And the hidden boss was SO fuckING HARD!!!

I only got 1 ending on Drakengard 2, because I got stuck on (the mid-air fight w/you-know-who) on hard mode. Maybe I'll finish it up someday.

When I got Drakengard 1 I didn't know what to expect, as a result I was so blown away I marathon played the game, but due to being so burned out I never got any of the secret endings. . When part 2 came out I did the same thing, maybe one day i'll suck it up and try for the different endings but for now i'm content reading about them on gamefaqs.

wow, i've never seen that many xenogears fans...til now.

when i lived with my parents, they frowned upon video game playing, so i actually used the excuse of sleeping in the basement during the summer cuz it was too hot, and played xenogears from 1am-7am, slept til 11am, and pretended i had a good night's sleep, took a nap during the day, and resumed the same schedule til i beat the game [6-8 days i belive]

mind you, i was in high school, and on summer vacation, so its not that freaky.

Super Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
Kingdom Hearts
Dragon Quest VIII (Never played any of the others)

Bouncer

Just kidding on the last one.

Absolutely Chrono Trigger. Although there are tons of other games that are almost right up there.

As a side note, haven't played Xenogears, but I'm trying to get it. Maybe off ebay.. or something. Trying to gather up all the great RPGs I've missed on the PS1/2.
