So instead of returning something to Gamestop (where it was purchased) because someone didn't get an artbook (which was promised) is wrong, but you think people should commit fraud and return the Gamestop game to Walmart so the poor Gamestop kids don't get in trouble?
I know returns get taken off an employees sell numbers, and I don't really care. I used to do pre-orders through Gamestop all the time. I usually had 5-10 preorders at any one time. I got tired of being begged to pre-order stuff to get "exclusive pre-order items" and then never get them because they "ran out".
I forgot what game it was, but I went it to pick it up, and I asked the guy for the artbook and he said "Oh, you should have gotten that when you preordered" and I told him that when I preordered the girl told me I'd get it when I picked up the game. And he said "Well, they came in, but we gave them all away".
So I said "Okay, well I'd like to return this game". and he was like "Why?" and I told him because I wasn't given what I was promised. So he sighed and mumbled and said "it's just an artbook..." like promising something, then giving them all away (really employees taking them all and selling them on eBay) isn't a big deal.
So because of his attitude toward me an the whole thing, I said "You know what? I think I'm going to cancel all my pre-orders" and he was like "you mean "EVERYTHING!" And I was like "yeah, I'm going to start ordering at Amazon".
So he cancelled my preorders for the Halo 3 console, Halo 3 Legendary, Halo 3 Controllers, and about 5-6 games and he was very upset. He said "Oh man, this is soooo wrong".
Did I know that they would come off his sales? Yes. Did I care? No.
I only went back to that Gamestop a few more times, but I never saw that guy again. Now I order everything from Amazon, except for a very few rare occasions (like Blazblue) where I am forced to order through Gamestop.
I'm an employee and to my knowledge, returns don't hurt sales numbers. If they do, these numbers aren't monitored very closely or matter.
Now cancelled preorders, those sure do. I'm not full-time anymore there, but I would hate it when someone would come in and cancel reserves. Since I work only one day a week now, I could care less about the preorder and GI crap. I make more money elsewhere. I'm not paid enough to care.
I never forced reserves on anybody but always asked people. If they said no, that's cool. Anyway, this employee you dealt with sounded like a total douche. I've been to many GameStop stores (too many actually...) and have noticed that GS employees, as a whole, tend to be jackasses and don't care about the customer. Not all are like this. I've seen several very cool employees who go out of their way for customers. I leave these people great customer service feedback. Then on the other hand, the assholes are the ones who I tear a new one with the
www.tellgamestop.com thing too.
As an employee, I know how much a negative customer service review hurts their store. It is a main factor in their store's weekly ranking. Most stores do VERY well so one negative feedback could DESTROY their ranking.
Low customer service score = low district ranking = lower bonus for store manager!
The best way to hurt someone is to mess with their money.
Talk about hitting them below the belt!
