Electronic Arts announced today that Boogie – an all new intellectual property in development at EA Montreal will be released exclusively for the Wii worldwide in 2007. Boogie is a unique music/rhythm-based game that takes advantage of the innovative Wii controls to get gamers off their couch, playing and dancing to a new beat.

“We’re creating something new and different for gamers of all ages to enjoy; the complete party package where gamers can dance as well as sing,” said Alain Tascan, Vice President and General Manager, EA Montreal. “Nintendo’s Wii is an amazing console that really gives us a platform to be creative and to re-think traditional game development.”

Boogie will have gamers dancing, singing and starring in their own music videos. Players can also choose and customize different characters in the game to best show off their dancing style and karaoke skills. With innovative gameplay that perfectly matches the unique Wii controls, Boogie is the ultimate videogame party package.

Boogie is the latest addition to EA Montreal’s roster of high profile games including SSX Blur and ARMY OF TWO. SSX Blur is the newest version of the critically acclaimed snowboarding franchise that shipped exclusively for the Wii in February. EA Montreal is also working on ARMY OF TWO, the highly anticipated shooter and original intellectual property that will redefine strategic two-man cooperative play. The game was ranked at the top of the list in Electronic Gaming Monthly’s Top 50 Coolest New Games cover story in their August issue. ARMY OF TWO will be released for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system.

The first thing that struck me was that it doesn't look like complete and utter shit. That makes me interested.

All I want is for SEGA to release Samba De Amigo for Wii and I'll be happy. If they do that then they can get back on my good side. That's the only rhythm game I want.

As for this, the first thing I saw was some rip-off Jack Skellington/Scarecrow (from Batman) back up dancers, then I noticed Patrick in full Travolta get-up. I'd give it a go. As for the kiddie thing, I suppose you'd want something more realistic from a dancing game like DDR real? Oh, wait. Maybe like Karaoke Revolution? No, wait. Guitar Hero? Damn! Wait...I'll come up with it...someday.
Another "exclusive" kiddie game for the Wii. Wonderful.
You make a comment like this, then right below it you say Gameplay is what makes a game great. Im confused. Was Parappa the Rapper "kiddie" in your opinion?

I am scared, EA is actually putting a GOOD effort towards the wii. I mean an origianl IP? That is unheard of now a days.

At a time when Nintendo desperately needs to shed the "kiddie console" image the last thing they need is exclusive third party kiddie games. I wouldn't complain if this was going to every console, but it's no coincidence that this game is exclusive and also kiddie in appearance.

This isn't Nintendo's fault as it is the thrid party publishers that need to get their head out of their asses and start making "exclusives" that are more than family games.

In whose opinion? Given the sales data, I don't think Nintendo needs to do anything desperately.

There are violent, new IPs on the Wii too. Red Steel, No More Heroes, and Sadness come to mind. We also have violent existing IPs too, with Manhunt 2 and RE coming.

I don't know if I buy the "needs to shed the kiddie image" argument anymore, but that's my personal opinion.

The only company who has openly spoken against Nintendo for that reason is Capcom, and I imagine they aren't going to ignore a system that has managed to sell 6 million in 4 months for much longer. They know they could drop a halfassed Mega Man game at any point and pretty much gaurantee a return profit.

There's been some other people making those kinds of comments in the past, but at this point, I don't think the image trumps the fact that the system is selling by the truckload, and doesn't look like it'll stop for a few weeks (if not months).

I guess I just think the need for mature games is coming from the hardcore segment, which has become an increasingly smaller fraction of gamers by the day.

I'm happy with the Wii so far, I have Call of Duty 3 (which I like better than the 360 version), Excite Truck (which pisses me off because it only has 2 player multiplayer but otherwise I like it) and Zelda which is also fun.

With any luck, a good implementation of multi-tasking in a rhythm game here will give Guitar Hero some ideas for incorporating movement.

1999 called. It wants its inane BS back. What next, "Nintendo's gonna go third party!" arguments?

Am I delusional, or didn't they announce Guitar Hero (II) for the Wii at the same time they announced it for the 360?

I'm not the one making awesome "exclusive" games for the other consoles and kiddie, kiddie wa wa "exclusives" for the wii.

If you want to call not wanting companies like Capcom, EA and Ubisoft dumbing down their games for the Wii and only offering family fare BS then you're the one with the problems.

I know it's crazy, but some people over the age of 10 do enjoy games without guns, swords, or death as much or more than those with.

The bigger and more important point is that after just four short months, the Wii has already been branded with the dreaded Scarlet "K" just like the 'Cube was.

This is significant because a substantial audience is kept away or is at least perceived to have been kept away and so publishers will be inclined to stay the safe course with kid-friendly titles that offer a totally uninspired experience. You'll be getting less NES Ducktales and more Wii Happy Feet if you know what I mean.

Man, I can't wait for Ducktales to hit the VC. I loved that game.

Who has "branded" this system with the letter K? You? Some people in the PS3 and Xbox 360 forum?

Exactly what substantial audience is being kept away from the Wii? BESIDES, the audience that can't seem to find one because they keep flying off the shelves.

You don't even have any clue what you are talking about. Go look at the GH lists from the PS2 and PS1 systems. Count up the amount of GH titles that are rated M, then report back. I swear people on these boards think the only games people play are violent and bloody.

I agree with Redemma: Why the hell hasn't Sega announced a Samba de Amigo yet?! It boggles my mind at how perfect the Wii is for that game.

Hell, port the orginal and 2000 in one package to test the waters on sales and I'd be happy. (Considering I've never played 2000.)

Did this game need to feature a woman with a customizable cup size to not be kiddie? Unless rhythm games are by default kiddie, in which case I'm not sure how Konami lives with themselves, producing DDR up the wazoo, and then having the balls to do something crazy like Castlevania.

Hmm. Lets see. Capcom, Ubisoft and the host of other 3rd party developers that refuse to make any game for the Wii that isn't family friendly.

Why do people refuse to see the truth that is right in front of their face?

The wii does have a kiddie image problem. Whether you see that as good or bad it still has the kiddie image. Deal with it.

Capcom, who's confirmed bupkis for the Wii but Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles? Ubisoft, who brought Red Steel, Far Cry, and Blazing Angels? The "host" of other 3rd party developers, who are bringing Scarface, the Godfather, Manhunt, Sadness, and Driver? Yeah, I can see how an all-ages EA rhythm game overwhelms that list. I'll be sure to go tell Harmonix that Guitar Hero is for kids, since there's no ass-rape.

The Wii was branded with the kiddie image before it came out, hell before it was announced. The GameCube was kiddie with RE4, Killer 7, etc. and the Wii will be kiddie with motherfucking Manhunt 2.

It's impossible for a console to not be kiddie when people will say it is no matter what games it has.

This is turning into a fanboy flame war. I think we need to get back on topic. I have to say for once in their career, EA is doing a good job with their games and seem to be the ones supporting wii the most.

I'm optimistic for the end results from a development team that can focus on one platform.

Who still cares if the Wii is kiddie or not? Does the console's rep hurt your enjoyment of the games?

The game looks interesting. The singing part seems confusing as they never explain how they're planning to do that.
I am scared, EA is actually putting a GOOD effort towards the wii. I mean an origianl IP? That is unheard of now a days.
It's because EA was backing the PS3 and that went no where so they have to eat shit and make Wii games.
It's because EA was backing the PS3 and that went no where so they have to eat shit and make Wii games.
LOL. A lot of developers had to eat shit and come up with something for the Wii after they wrote it off. I can imagine an exec sitting in his office when a big red light and annoying alarm goes off on the wall signaling the craptacular sales of the PS3.
"Oh shit! Go to plan B! Go to plan B! Get me Reggie on the phone NOW damnit!!!!!!!!
The game looks interesting. The singing part seems confusing as they never explain how they're planning to do that.
That's what stood out for me too. I guess they'll be including a microphone. Maybe the rumors of a Harry Potter game with Wiimote wand-waving and voice-activated spells are true after all.

Thanks for the last sentence. I literally laughed at that.

Hands-on impressions.

To demonstrate the style theory, Caballero started shaking his nunchuck hand in small circles — not with the frantic reel-in-the-fish move required by some other Wii games, but more slowly, like he was feeling the music. As he moved his hand, the fat alien danced. Onscreen cues required Caballero to do other types of shakes and rolls that triggered different dance moves.

The style part really came in with the way Caballero used the Wii remote. The nunchuck moved the alien's body, but the remote moved its head. The remote had to be pointed at the screen, the point of focus showing up as an icon of two eyes. Wherever those eyes landed on the screen was where the alien looked. Spinning those eyes got its head twirling. Moving them up and down forced a cool nod. As he and the alien got into it, the crowd cheered and lights flashed. A good time was being had by all.

I would rather have both personally.

For once (after the SNES anyway) I'd like to see a Nintendo console with a nice varied library so that I don't have to buy multiple consoles to play all the types of games I like.

It's not looking promising unfortunately. :whistle2:(

That sounds likely, but I'm wondering how they'd implement a microphone. It won't be an attachment to the Wii Remote since this game uses the nunchuck, so maybe it's a wireless headset or something.

Meh, not a fan of WWII shooters. :D

Anyway, my point wasn't so much with that one game from EA, but more that I just hope the Wii ends up getting good games in both the "kiddy" and "adult" genre's (I hate those labels, but you know what I mean).

The N64 and Wii were lacking in "adult" genres. There were some good games, Eternal Darkness, Goldeneye etc., just not enough IMO.

Maybe I'm just living in a bubble, but it's been hard for me to imagine the Wii as a kiddie console until I saw a child in the store asking for a Wii game... For some reason, it hadn't occurred to me because I assumed the Wii was always marketed as adult-friendly, as in I don't see commercials with little kids playing the Wii. I know a lot of people aged 20-30 with Wiis, and every adult I've let play suddenly wants to get one themselves. So all my parents friends are getting Wiis for themselves, not for their kids, and it would seem that most of the VC titles, besides the obvious big ones, are geared towards people like me, who will only download it because they played it when it was first released in the 80s/90s. Is there some kind of estimated demographic breakdown of console owners? I'm curious now...

I wonder if more than one attachment can be connected to the Wii Remote, maybe with a splitter or something. Wireless would probably make more sense.

"Kiddie," my ass! If I was a kid, and saw those creepy motherfuckers, I'd put the controller down and ask for some orange juice. This is more warped looking than Nightmare Before Christmas. For songs, they should have Gravediggaz and Dalek. You'll have LSD-inspired characters dancing all like maddness, going "The cause of death is unknown to the cops, 'cuz when I kill them, I leave them no evidence to autopse. First I'll assasinate them, and then I'll cremate them, and take all of their fuckin' ashes and evaporate them!"

This game is going to kick so much ass, I can't wait.
