Can anyone help me connect to the PSN on PS3? :P...

I'm tired of posting threads on different sites looking for help...Hopefully this time I will actually get a helpful answer...

My problem is simple:I can't connect to the Playstation Network.

I had stopped going online with PS3 because I moved the ethernet cable from it to my computer, for a month or 2.

And I just put it back about a week ago, just to find out that it doesn't connect to the PSN.

The first thing I did when I had turned it on was setup the internet connection, and before it went any further than:

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded

it told me I needed to download an update (3.41)

After that, I DLed it, installed it, and ever since then I wasn't able to connect to PSN.

Now everytime I try to setup a connection it says:

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded
Playstation Network: Failed

and it doesn't go any further...I don't know if its the update that did this or not, but a few months ago I was able to connect just fine.

I don't believe that any settings changed on my laptop (I used a Sprint Franklin Wireless USB modem on my laptop, and run an ethernet cable from it to my PS3,)
so it's not like I got a new computer with whole new IP settings and all that stuff...

It still lets me download things and use the internet browser on my PS3, but it just doesn't connect to the Playstation Network.

I don't know why it's doing this...People say its probably that my UPnP isn't enabled, and to go on the Routers website and enable it, but I don't know how.

It's not a wireless router, its just a USB modem, and I go into my PC settings and the Universal Plug and Play setting was on and correct.

My firewall is completely off, so it has nothing to do with Ports.

Can anyone please help me?

Does it give an explanation as to why it failed? Usually it's because your username/password is incorrect. Make sure it's typed in correctly in your account. Try signing into your account at Playstation.com to make sure you're still a member (and not banned or something). Also, try creating a new PSN account and see if you can sign in to that.

How long has this happening btw? Are you able to DL the latest FW (which is 3.50)? It's possible the system won't allow you to connect because you're not on the latest FW. I know I can't sign in when there's a new mandatory FW

Oh no, it's not that my username/password isn't correct.

And yes It let me download the latest 3.50 patch.

The problem is that when I try to setup an internet connection, then Test the internet connection, it always fails at Playstation Network.

my NAT type is 2, and it says UPnP: Not Available, but I only think thats because it never actually retrieved it from the internet Testing, since its after Playstation Network, and it always fails before it gets to that point.

Its been happening for a week or so, and I've signed into my account at Playstation.com and even posted a thread asking for help there, but nothing.

It doesn't give an explanation to why it failed...This is exactly how my screen looks while its Testing the connection:

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded
Playstation Network: Checking...
UPnP: -
NAT Type: -
Connection Speed (Download)*: -
Connection Speed (Upload)*: -

*Connection speed results are estimates and are provided as a reference only.

And then after 15-20 seconds it just shows

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded
Playstation Network: Failed

etc. etc.
and at the bottom it tells me "The connection with Playstation Network timed out."

And that's all.

Power off your modem and router, if you have one, and leave them off for at least 1 minute.
Power up the modem, and let it sit for about 1 minute, until all the lights are on. If you have a router, power it on and let it sit for about 1 minute. Then reboot your PS3 if its on, and try again.

I don't have a router, its just a USB Modem and its on my laptop, so would you mean to turn off my computer (while leaving the PS3 on,) and keep it off for a minute, turn the computer back on - and connect it to the internet, let it sit for a minute, then restart the PS3* and try to setup the internet connection then?

Yes, I am. Let me just explain, or try to explain, all that I have enabled and all of that stuff.

If I go all the way back to when I FIRST found out I could get online with PS3 using a laptop and usb modem, I was thrilled.

I followed all the instructions to do so, which was to go into my modem settings (Network Settings) and to set it to Share Internet Connection and I chose it to do so with the Local Area Connection.

And at first, not realizing I had to have the correct ports installed, I turned my Firewall off, which let me connect to the PSN fully.

So I have I.C.S. enabled and its pointing torwards the Local Area Connection, and, back then, I didn't know anything about UPnP, whether or not it was disabled/enabled, but I do know that it worked anyhow.

So its been all dandy from the beginning.

Now, a few months ago, I kind of got bored with playing PS3, so I took the Ethernet cable from the PS3 and hooked it to my computer.

I've been playing on my PC for those months, and now I wanted to play on PSN and download some new demos, etc.

And when I hooked up the Ethernet to my Playstation 3, I did the usual. I went to Network Settings, setup the connection, and then Tested the internet connection, it told me:

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded, and before it went to Playstation Network, it told me I needed to update my PS3.

So I updated it to 3.41, and afterwards I said, ok, let me setup my connection again. so I went back, and it told me:

Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded
Playstation Network: Failed

So I thought, what's going on?

I went online to see if it was a PSN server-wide thing, but I, along with a few others, were the only ones that had this problem.

So now yesterday, I tried it again, and it told me ANOTHER update was available, so I was like Oh! Maybe this will fix my problem.

Just to find out that nothing has changed.

I still have the demo downloading from before I stopped playing PS3, so its not my connection...I can browse the web and or download features like Photo Gallery.

And it even tells me that there IS an update available.

And now everyone is saying that its probably my UPnP, but how could it be? Nothing has changed on my part...

If that helps at all.

Have you tried connecting your PS3 directly to your internet connection? (skipping the laptop) Or is that not possible?

No :p It's not possible to direct-connect the Ethernet from the Modem to the PS3, its not like a modem that has the lights on it that says Connected or Ready w/e, and it doesn't have a cable cord that you twist on or a ethernet socket.

It's not that kind of modem.

It's a small, external card. If I had to say, its like an iPod with a USB plug attatched to it, and you just plug it into the USB port on your computer, open the program and then click Connect.

Something that I just thought of, that I've been failing to mention, is that during those few months that I wasn't connected to the PS3, I had installed AVG Internet Security 9.0 on this laptop.

I disabled its Firewall AND the Windows Firewall, but still nothing.

Could AVG have installed files that intercept the required connection of the PSN?

Edited to add: NEVER MIND. Noticed that you have NAT type 2

Honestly not sure what the issue is.

Manually set your network settings on your PS3. Go into network settings and configure a set of custom settings for a wired connection. Set under manual settings for speed select auto-detect, ip address automatic, host name don't set, DNS automatic, mtu automatic, proxy server do not use(unless you use one), UPNP enabled and give it another try. Also check your network connection and make sure it's properly set up on your laptop end, check the properties and make sure things are up to snuff.

Also call to check with your provider to see if they're blocking the PSN, it's entirely possible they are.

You could try getting a 3g router but that would kind of defeat the purpose of having a usb modem.

It sounds like what you have is a wifi card OR a satellite modem????? How else could it be a modem if it doesn't have any external wires??

What is your USB modem called / model number?

If I'm reading it right (not sure if I'm imagining what it looks like correctly in my head, but it's worth a shot to mention anyway) in any case would something like this work for you?

http://www.google.com/images?q=usb+...8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=683&bih=385

Not sure if it works like that (since it's connected to my Wii and then to the Ethernet cable) but I wouldn't see why it wouldn't this way you could bypass your laptop completely. Hope you get it fixed. ;)

Are you on a satellite (or other high-ping) connection? If so, this:
Obtain IP Address: Succeeded
Internet Connection: Succeeded
Playstation Network: Failed
is completely normal. I'd always get this on my connection test when I had satellite. It seems it only gives it a second or two to respond during the test. I had no problem actually logging in to PSN, though. It'd just take me 30 seconds or so. Just because it fails during the test doesn't mean that it'll fail when you try to log in.
