Crap Games to Avoid (Blacklist?)
I agree with not listing games like Halo 2 and Animal Crossing but i disagree with the 50% on gamerankings. Lord of the Rings 3rd age got a 75% on there but i must say its one of the worst games ive played. It would maybe be worth it at 10 bucks but the graphics are horrible, the story is based on the movie(which i dont mind but it means it isnt new) and the game is just...bad. One of the few games i have returned within the first day playing it.

I liked the movies and didnt overhype this, saw good scores, bought it and was very sad indeed.
This is exactly why I made that recommendation. The fact is, the 74% at GameRankings indicates that a substantial number of people would disagree with you. I've seen plenty of positive reviews for this title and fully intend to pick it up when the price is right. By all indications, they went for something very similar to FFX and did a reasonable job considering the short time frame of development and the confines of the material.

Consider your priorities. You disparage a game based on a media license for deriving its plot from that media license. This isn't a TV series where you can slip it in as an unproduced episode ala Buffy, nor is the original author alive to offer a plot line that fits into the big story without offending the fans. Nobody else could get away with that and EA knows it. They already killed one LOTR project that attempted to flesh out parts of distant past in the overall story for which Tolkien didn't supply much detail. LOTR games are going to be based on LOTR. For games that are merely LOTR-ish you have virtually the entire fantasy game genre to date.

Seriously, this list should be limited to those products that gamers with a wide range of tastes can agree is thoroughly free of anything that might cause enjoyment to be experienced, except in mockery of the game itself.

Evergrace. That thing is damn near unplayable. Maybe i should've given it more than 30 mins, but still...

Also add Legend of Alon D'ar to that list. What was Ubisoft thinking? Both of these are RPGs by the way.
Funny, Evergrace and Eternal Ring are my two favorite PS2 launch titles. I've long had a fondness for From's action RPGs. Now, Forever Kingdom, the prequel/sequel to Evergrace, had some problems that caused my to put aside for a while but I respect that they were trying to do something different. I fully intend to give it another shot someday.

Haven't played Legend of Alon D'ar yet but I'm betting I'll like more than you did. Tastes vary. Someone with only passing interest in a genre is only going to want the best it has to offer while someone else who feel underserved by the market offering will accept a wider range of quality.
Perhaps it's because I played higher quality games before the two and playing them were a step down. And I don't have a passing phase in RPGs, 95% of my game collection are RPGs and that's the genre I play the most. I didn't like FFX, but i didn't feel the need to list it here. My favorite RPG for the PS2 is an often overlooked game called Shadow Hearts. Stop insinuating that I'm shallow for not liking games which I thought sucked. Your Holier-than-thou attitude puts me off.

FYI, Alon D'ar i tried to like 3-4 times before i gave up on it. Evergrace, was just torture. I tried it 3-4 times, half an hour each time, but I still coulnd't force myself to like it.
Excuse me, when did I use the word shallow or anything resembling it? I said tastes vary. This has no judgement implied whatsoever. To say you're an RPG fan is painting with a broad brush. Plenty of those who like one sort of RPG don't care for others. The From Software First Person Action RPGs have been widely panned but I've enjoyed them quite a lot.

I have no interest in sport games in general but it doesn't preclude me from appreciating some distinctions must be made in rating games. The opinion of someone who loves football and isn't interested in basketball isn't going to be of much help in rating the best and worst basketball games since they're all guilty of the mortal sin of not being football games. While I wouldn't attempt to review a sports game I can recognize bad production values when they are pointed out. My argument is that Evergrace wasn't guilty of such for its generation of games that started life as PS1 projects and got shifted tot he PS2. There were a number of nifty elements in this game I wouldn't mind seeing used again.

Forever Kingdom failed largely on try to push the idea of controlling a group of characters but not finding a good mechanism to make it work. It was this aspect that put me off a game I was otherwise enjoying. If it were just a peripheral element, like the Blitzball game in FFX, I wouldn't mind but it was too central to the gameplay and couldn't be ignored. Some other players had less of an issue with the control scheme and rated it higher than I would.
Eternal Darkness- GC

You ever play either of those games? Man, how assinine is it to suggest these 2 games be black listed?

some fighting games to toss in there:

shaq-fu
war gods
clayfighter
fighter's destiny
battle blaze
a crapload of street fighter ripoffs from the early-mid-90s
and i'm not sure if this belongs here or not, but the general consensus of the fighting game community is that svc chaos sucks. im sure, though, that there's some casual fighting gamers that think it's not bad.

As a neutral third party, I honestly think you misinterpreted him. I know you dropped it, but I just wanted to let you know.

Sheep (PS1) - A fun little game, but a bad PC port because a glitch halfway through makes the rest of the game unplayable.

Was bad boys 2 that bad? Thats a shame.

Yup, I know I did. Which is why I dropped it.

Here are some truly awful games that I've played and reviewed in kind (only counting current-gen consoles). Avoid these like the plague:

Lowrider - PS2
The Guy Game - PS2/Xbox
WWE Crush Hour - PS2
Super Bombad Racing - PS2
Nightcaster 2 - Xbox (the first one blows, too)
Xbox Music Mixer - Xbox

Yes I have played and owned both of them and returned both shortly to the stores after playing them. I had heard Eternal Darkness was good and I loved the RE series on Gamecube but Eternal Darkness had such cheesy enemies, and bad clunky controls, and weak graphics I couldn't take it. And as Animal Crossing goes, I was really looking forward to it because of all the good reviews it has gotten and the 1st day I played it I said, "yanno, this is pretty fun." and I was looking forward to playing it the next day. After about 3 days I noticed something, its the same damn thing over and over again, you walk around town which takes forever, you talk to the same animals, you fish and dig and look at the lost and found and put up wallpaper in your house, and you turn in fossils. It is just so completly boring after playing it for a few days that I had to return it. And how about next time you say something is asinine you spell it correctly.
I think I'm considering this thread one to avoid (blacklisted). Noble idea by the OP, though.
Yes yes, no good has come of it. Due to people being jackasses, myself included.

Do you happen to have a Fighter's Destiny you want to get rid of? I know it sucked, but for some reason I really liked it and my cousin borrowed it and I never got it back.

Turok: (D)Evolution :)
Drake of the 99 Dragons
Bruce Lee: Quest of the Dragons
Toxic Grind
Pulse Racer
Batman: Dark Tomorrow
Kabuki Warriors
..
.. and just about any game you can find on the CompUSA bargain rack (no offense intended to any one offended by this).

Breakdown actually wasn't bad at all. You probably didn't like Riddick either, or any FPS for that matter, but that hardly makes them terrible blacklist games to be avoided.

This thread does serve a good purpose: it shows that the whole idea of a good game is wholly subjective.

Personally, I'm super cautious about buying new games so I don't get too much crap. Most of it gets sifted out by reading reviews and Metacritic.

That said, I found the first Wutang fighter pretty much unplayable due to the weird controls.

FIFA 64 sucked.

I love soccer games, but no magazine had even reported this game coming out, suddenly it was on the shelf at BB, retailing for $79.99. (!!!) I had been dying for a soccer game on the 64 and even though I hadn't even heard of it coming out, I bought it because FIFA is usually good. This game had the slowest reactions in the world though (i.e. you would push slide tackle and it wouldn't actually do it for about three seconds). Is this type of thing why everyone is saying that EA sucks, or is everyone just mad about the NFL thing?

I'm so glad ISSS64 came out.

This thread is pretty opinionated. I thought it would be a list of games with bugs, or un-finished or something.

Like I said, I really liked it. It's been over five years since I played it though, so I'm not sure why I liked it. Maybe that was why. I definitely need to pick it up again. (I tried to get it during that Wherehouse.com clearance).
EnClave
What!!! Enclave is such a great Xbox game! The only reason why some people don't like the game is because of it's difficulty...

Wow, this has turned into complete BS. In no way were either Enclave or Breakdown bad, and Star Fox Adventures may have been a let down, but was by no means a terrible game to be avoided.

Terrible games are Smackdown Just Bring It, for its horrendous load times, awful graphics, and wasting of memory card space. Or Batman anything, the only exception being Batman Returns for SNES.

You know, SunSoft's Batman for the Sega Genesis was a really good game too. It followed the movie pretty well for a game released back in 1990...
