My whole problem with ROH as compared to ECW is that there's almost no angles in ROH. ECW had some truly legendary stuff, things that really broke new ground as to what wrestling could be. ROH's got a lot of great workers, but aside from maybe five guys, everyone seems like a clone of another guy. There's almost NO character development. It's like watching Impact with better matches.

I will say, though, that The Briscoes against Steenerico in a ladder match could be really cool.
For the most part, I'd have to agree. There is usually one major angle enveloping the company and the rest of the show just kinds of exists. There was a ROH-CZW fued which was said to have been utterly crazy but I wasn't around for that.

Since they got people contracted, I think Gabe has been trying to pull it together. You have a three faction angle bewteen the former stablemates of Generation Next - Austin Aries v. Jack Evans v. Roderick Strong (The Resilience v. The Vulture Squad v. The No Remorse Corps.). A fued between Chris Hero and Claduio Castagnoli. The Briscoes and Steenerico, which is finally coming to an end. And the steamroller that is Morishima.

Still, you're right. there's nothing as legendary as the stuff that went down in ECW. At the same time, it's not trying to be ECW. ROH isn't trying to shock and awe the audience through crazy (in a good way) storylines but rather through the ringwork, which is why it's accessible to kids and newcomers.

Remember when Bischoff said that ECW had to tone down its style once it got to the mainstream and TNN? Ring of Honor will never have to do that since it's not pushing the limits on censorship. It's just about the wrestling. Elitist marks aside, I appreciate the fact that compared to the current wrestling market, I have a choice aside from Diva Searches and Pacman Jones. They just need to give more people a mic.

On a sidenote, what do you make about the PWG promotion in general?

August 30th: Bryan Danielson underwent laser eye surgery on Monday to repair his retina. He is scheduled to be out 4-6 weeks, but will have check ups every week to look at his progress. All signs from the surgery are positive and it is 90% that Danielson will regain his eyesight, although it might be blurred. We'll have more updates as soon as we get them. As a result, we don't want to false advertise Danielson for the 9/14 main event in Detroit in case he can't wrestle that night. Detroit will now have Jay & Mark Briscoe defend the ROH World Tag Team Titles against The Resilience of Austin Aries & Matt Cross. The Resilience have been on a hot streak and are gaining momentum. The ROH World Tag Team Titles could be in their future!!!

August 30th: Delirious vs. Matt Sydal for the very last time has been signed for the 9/15 PPV taping in Chicago. In fact, Morishima won't even know who his challenger will be that night. The winner will face Morishima for the World Title in the second half of the show. Morishima is sure to face a tough challenge in Detroit.

Jacobs' comeback will continue in Detroit when he faces Chris Hero with Larry Sweeney, Sara Del Rey, Tank Toland & Bobby Dempsey. This one will really show if Jacobs' knee is strong. Great seats still remain at ROHwrestling.com or by calling 215-781-2500.

Thanks for the info Zen. I remember American Dragon, he was a pretty good wrestler. Is Low-Ki still around? He was probably my top guy when I used to be into it hardcore.

Damn in Chicago..I might have to check that out then. For only 10 bucks it sounds like a really good deal. I've been meaning to check out a wrestling event and ROH sounds like a good choice.

What I meant about the ECW thing was if ROH has the crazy good matches, cult following, etc. Of course I knew ROH was all about wrestling. I don't expect them to stack tables in the ring and then fall through them and stuff.

Has anyone been to a ROH show? Do they sale tapes and such? I'll proably go on Ebay and get some but it would be cool if they sold them at the show considering it's right around the corner.

Edit-Do these ROH shows usually sell out fast? How is the general admission seating? Can you still see all the action pretty good? I'm a newb when it comes to this stuff. Last wrestling show I went to was some crappy independent promotion and it was in a school gym, so we got front row.

Low-ki signed with TNA and left the ROH roster.

As for the ECW thing, yeah it has a lot of crazy good matches and a pretty big cult following. I mean they've succesfully toured Europe and Japan. ECW never got around to doing even that much.

I've been to 5 ROH shows this year. 3 times n New York City. 2 times in Edison, NJ. They stack a huge table with DVDs, shirts, action figures and all that kind of stuff at live shows. They do a buy 3 get 1 free at the live shows. I gave you the Ebay links since you could probably pull an overall lower rate for the DVDs.

If you do a buy 3 get 1 free at the live show, I would suggest:

Fifth Year Festival New York City
Fifth Year Festival Finale

Hmm that sounds good. Sucks about Low-Ki, I assume he's not being used right in TNA?

Well, not in the right way. He's in Triple X at the moment. Oh, and he goes by the name "Senshi" in TNA.
On a sidenote, what do you make about the PWG promotion in general?
PWG does a lot of things in the same way that ROH does, I guess. Their roster draws talent from SoCal indy stars as well as the bigger names on the indy circuit, as well as drawing the occasional Dragon Gate wrestler. They used to fly in a lot of TNA guys on a regular basis (namely Styles, Daniels, Joe, Sabin, Shelley, Kazarian, and others), but that's no longer the case with TNA's exclusive deal with their talent. We still get a lot of the big name indy guys like Hero, Claudio, Sydal, Aries, Evans, Roderick, and the like. The big thing about PWG is that a lot of guys that have gone on to ROH were PWG guys first, such as Davey Richards, Steen, Generico, Super Dragon, and Romero.

PWG tends to book matches much like ROH does, with little to no build up or angles. It's frustrating because it becomes hard to care about feuds when they're so random, but for the angles PWG does put on, it works. PWG tends to inject a little more comedy into their shows, anywhere from the show titles (Free Admission - Just Kidding, The Ernest P. Worrell Memorial Tournament, Kee_ The _ Out Of Our _ool, etc.) to their promos (if you can find PWG DVD's, there's some GOLD there). It's a pretty fun promotion that just happens to put on a lot of great shows.

The thing about the SoCal scene is that it's almost as devoted as the Philly/NY scene is to ROH and ECW. There's at least a half-dozen promotions at any given time putting on a show, and there's a lot of great home grown talent here. PWG happens to bring together the best of the best locally as well as a solid roster of fly-ins.

If you're looking to check out PWG shows, I highly recommend any of the Battle Of Los Angeles DVD's. It's PWG's signature event, and gives a pretty good idea of what the shows are like. HighSpots tends to stock most of the PWG stuff, but you can always get them from PWG's site (http://www.prowrestlingguerrilla.com) and they've usually got a deal where you can score a few DVD's at a discount rate (usually $15 each, bundled for 3 for $30 or something like that). Matches are always listed on the site, so that should give you an idea of what to look for.

Whew. If all else fails, YouTube has a pretty decent collection of PWG vids. :)

-- WWE officially suspended ten of its performers today, based on information from investigators in the Albany, NY district attorney's office. None of the names have been released, although it will be obvious over the next week who they are.

My guess is that it won't be any of the top guys.
My guess is that it won't be any of the top guys.
It will be noticeable, IMO. Chris Masters and who else?

EDIT: According to WWE (internet sites are saying this), beginning November 1st, they are going to publicly release the names of any wellness-policy related suspension. Interesting to see if it actually happens.

Of course, as per usual, the John Cena/Randy Orton/Rey Mysterio/Triple H types won't be suspended (though there is pretty solid evidence of Orton and Mysterio fishing for steroids from starry-eyed physicians in the past).

It was through the PWG that I discovered Kevin Steen and El Generico. This is the first PWG promo I ever saw and I loved it. I fished for more and came up on Steen and Generico.

I think it's just easier to appreciate the promotion that is closer to you, whose shows you can go to live.

Top wrestlers Randy Orton, Charles Haas, Jr., Adam "Edge" Copeland, Robert "Booker T" Huffman, Shane Helms, Mike Bucci, Anthony Carelli, John "Johnny Nitro" Hennigan, Darren "William Regal" Matthews, Ken "Mr. Kennedy" Anderson and Chavo Guerrero were all identified as clients of Signature Pharmacy in Orlando, the site raided by Albany County and Florida law enforcement agencies in February for distributing steroids and other prescription drugs to clients who had not been examined by doctors. The investigation is part of a probe into illegal Internet drug distribution by Albany D.A. David Soares.

Is that the actual list? If it is, there's 11 names. Two of them are injured long term(Edge, Helms) and one(Simon Dean) isn't even wrestling anymore. If this is the list of the suspensions, this will really fuck up the bastard son storyline.
I mean they've succesfully toured Europe and Japan. ECW never got around to doing even that much.

ECW toured Japan with FMW back around 1998.

They had matches like Sabu & RVD vs. Jinsei Shinzaki & Hayabusa.

So it's 10 suspensions. Bucci works backstage (or in OVW - I can't recall like Alberto Gonzales), so he's probably not signed to a "talent" contract, exempting him from the wellness policy.

BTW: Anthony Carelli = Boris Alexiev = Santino Marella.

Of the 10:
6 are on Raw (Marella, Orton, Haas, Regal, Booker, Kennedy) and ALL of them, save for Haas, had been serving primary roles on the show. Raw's going to be VERY different come Monday (save for Cena beating everybody).

1 is ECW (Nitro), but he's their fucking champ. I KNOW! Give the belt to Pat Patterson, and declare that he pinned Nitro in Rio over the weekend! fucking Brilliant! (In an ironic twist, it appears that CM Punk's sXe lifestyle will benefit him sooner than later)

1 is on Smackdown, and hasn't been doing shit except for a semi-prominent jobber match at Summerslam (in order to complete the storyline arc and bring Mysterio back into the fold). Looks like Smackdown is hardly being ruffled at all.

The final two (Edge, Helms) are injured, and their suspensions rather inconsequential. An ideal time to be injured, really (in such that there is an ideal time).

So, Smackdown has suffered the least (for now). We all KNOW that Smackdown's gonna get raided in order to shove the remaining top card guys to Raw. Also, looks like Triple H is going to win that title back sooner than later.

I was working a roller derby match at the Nutter Center a few weeks back (in Dayton, OH), and was marvelling at being on the floor of the building where RVD sliced his eyelid open doing the double tables spot w/ Sabu against Shinzaki and Hayabusa.

Nobody else was impressed. Heatwave '98 was the PPV. There's a moral to the story: never let a woman get between you and a potentially good wrestling show. I never made it to Heatwave; the only ECW PPV I attended was November to Remember 2000.
It is important to note that the list of names in the Daily News article is NOT the list of the ten wrestlers that were suspended today, and is NOT an indication of any illegal actions on their part. This list is simply wrestlers that were clients of the Signature Pharmacy.
So no, this isn't the suspension list. I'd definitely expect some overlap, though.

Kennedy circa 2003.

Interesting that he still used the "KK" emblem, since his wrestling name up until he moved up from Velocity was "Ken Anderson," I think.

God, the shots with the crowd in them are exhibits A through fuckin' Z of why I hate wrestling shows live.

He was going by 'Kamikaze' Ken Anderson in this match. It was against Austin Aries with CM Punk on commentary.

Best comment by Punk?

"This kid isn't going anywhere in Ring of Honor" on Austin Aries.

I wonder what Kennedy thinks of his jester tattoo...

While I'm not one for shitty tribal tattoos, that one he has on his back is money.

WTF, is that from a CZW show? Note the light tube accessories in the background.

Zen, I agree about hometown pride. I used to go to CAPW (Cleveland All-Pro) shows back home, and even though most of their talent sucked, I still had a blast cause it was right in my backyard. I actually got into PWG because I worked with one of their guys, and he invited me to a show. First one I went to, Super Dragon went crazy and put him through three tables - the match was cut short because his partner got hurt, and Dragon decided to improvise and play up the monster heel.

Can't say I don't like ROH's product. Just don't get to enjoy it much. :whistle2:(

Myke, is that RVD/Sabu v Hayabusa/Shinzaki match on any of the ECW DVD's? I think there's a match between the two teams on the FMW/ECW DVD, but I don't recall if the one from Dayton is on anything.
The entire Heatwave '98 PPV is its own DVD. I don't know if it's on any of the WWE-released videos, though.
Alright. I'm pretty sure I own that one, but for whatever reason, I don't remember that spot. Sounds like I should rewatch it.

EDIT - For anyone who gets into internet rumors, here's one - Alex Shelley has been added to PWG's Battle Of Los Angeles tournament, taking the place of the injured Super Dragon. Shelley will wrestle Tyler Black in the first round, and Tony Kozina has been moved to Dragon's position, facing El Generico in his opening match. Shelley's a contracted TNA wrestler, and as of a few months ago, TNA had strictly forbid their talent from working ROH and PWG shows. Go figure.

Anderson and Aries had one of the hottest feuds going in the Mid-America wrestling in 2002 (I may grab one or two of those shows off Smart Mark Video one day), and in 2003 were asked to bring their game to IWA-MS.

Aries began a fast ascent to being one of the top guys in the indies, while that Anderson guy wallowed in obscurity, save for being on occasional Heat/Velocity jobber, until getting a WWE developmental contract in February of 2005.

There you go.

Reading more about the WWE suspensions, there are lists of 15+ guys. My best guess is that the top-card guys got a pass, while guys like Funaki and Masters will be suspended.

What's most fascinating about these suspensions is that they are related to an illegal prescription sting coming out of the NY area, and *NOT* related to failed drug tests. That this is causing the suspensions shows that either (1) the drug tests are not adequately showing the drugs/substances wrestlers ARE using, (2) the "prescription" caveat that WWE's wellness policy allows for (any substance is allowed, including steroids, provided the wrestler has a prescription) has led to a backdoor scandal for WWE, or (3) the drug tests were not a problem, but WWE looked the other way, rather than fairly, immediately, and accurately handing down suspensions and firings (basically keeping the wellness policy, but removing any teeth from it).

This scandal shows that, above all, the "wellness policy" is a joke and another sham to keep the public fooled into thinking Vince and the WWE are doing something about drug abuse (just like he tried to do in the early 1990's).

EDIT: So, Torrie Wilson is now a member of VKM, huh?

Masters? Drugs? Say it aint so!!! Though i am kind of suprised at Funaki & Regal's names being on the list.

Whats up with someone trying to sue Sandman because they got some blood on em and had their back 'aggrivated' during his enterance. Didnt a fan once get his arm caught on fire, and ECW wasnt liable because their was some unwritten rule to entering the building?

Damn, that list sucks!!!!!

On a lighter note, I am stoked to finally have this:

I know it's old news, but that set is getting harder and harder to find. DeepDiscount and Amazon don't even list it anymore! Right now WWE ShopZone and Walmart.com seem to be the best options for getting it.

May as well also post this... I don't really have much "collectible" wrestling items but I'm rather proud of this one. It's the "Rise and Fall of ECW" dvd, signed by Joey Styles, Terry Funk, Mick Foley, D-Von, Bubba Ray, and The Blue Meanie!

nice... but ive pretty much given up on dvd..

I was looking forward to the heel Puder going somewhere, but then he just disappeared! Haha this one segment, where these divas talk to him for a bit and then leave the room. Puder's got this shit-eating grin on his face and he's like "Women... they're all the same... they just want me for my money!" Maaaaaan, I loved that.

and lmao at all the special effects in the '06 Rumble. First Cena comes down in that fucking spaceship... then Undertaker shoots lighting and the ring explodes.

I have some old VHS tapes that I'm going to be getting rid of and wanted to see if any of you are interested in them first. These are former rental copies and have a tag on the front and back of the sleeve. I'll provide a match list if somebody wants one. I'll ship media mail w/delivery confirmation. $5 shipped per tape, 4 or more $4 shipped per tape, all 9 $3 shipped per tape.

How is the packaging on that Rumble set? I've heard it's pretty weak. Also, have you watched any of the Attitude Era rumbles? Scorch was commenting on how rough the blurring was in those. Just curious, as I'm still thinking about picking this up regardless.
I want those so bad but cannot buy them :(.

Must've been great being able to see Austin 3:16 when it first happened.
I was shocked by that promo.
