Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6

ZOMG. So, I was cheesing 1-4 boss.
I got him down to about 30% left in his health. I say, look at him just standing there, he doesn't even turn around when I get super close. I'll just finish him off. Tried to back stab, missed, got destroyed. Luckily I only lost 1 soul level. This time it's all cheese...
As long as you go slowly and keep your shield up surviving isn't that bad. Also using magic (or arrows I suppose) from a distance doesn't hurt. Read messages on the ground too, they can be very helpful (sometimes)
Reading messages can only be done online right(your talking about messages other players leave on the ground?)? I am assuming from this and things iv heard from others its pretty important to play this online/alot easier?

I finished 2-2 and 4-2 today.
I thought I was going to have a tough time with the flamelurker based on what everybody else had to say about him, but I just used the purple shield, flame-resist ring and soul arrow and he went down without much of a fight.

I'm kind of confused about upgrading with blacksmith ed. I have
the flamelurker and armor spider souls, and want to upgrade my compound long bow +7 into the lava bow. My only option for upgrading from the menu is up to compound long bow +8, am I missing something, or do I need something else to upgrade?

You need to make sure you have given him
the red hot demon soul. Have it in your inventory and just keep approaching him and talking to him to unlock the good upgrades.

Yeah the messages are online only. I wouldn't say it's a lot easier, but they're useful for little things like there's a trap in front of you or use fire on the guy in the next room (which is not always accurate).
I thought you could use magic no matter what class you were as long as you had the wand. Where does one get this and how do you get the magic or healing spells?
Yeah find that wand. Once you do people will help you get spells
dont be afreaid to talk to the people in the nexus again, until you have the wand or a talisman neither of them want anything to do with you. I didnt realize those people taught spells becuase when I first talked to them they basically told me to get lost.

Dr. Foo thanks I skipped that portion of the lever, found it last night when I went back.
I took the back way to Flamelurker, and am going back now to finish up the level

Got a question for anyone.

Say I am after an upgraded weapon. And You can get there with 2 or more routes with various weapons... Does the end result weigh the same?

I am after a certain upgraded weapon and i can get there with the great axe, or the crescent axe. The crescent axe is 3.0 lighter. I assume the end result will weigh the same, but I hate to find out it wont later.

I just tried 5-1, and I just want to say the plague sucks - I went through all of my plague healing items the first time I tried, should have just died and done it again saving the items. Also what's the deal with the red roach-like things, it seemed like they opened a path, but I couldn't really tell?

unless I'm mistaken, if u load ur game, status effects go away. So if u got plagued by the rats (I don't know what else in 5-1 would have plagued u. Only place I ever got it was fucking 5-3), kill em all off quick and just reload. No need to go through your lotuses

Ugh, I'm one weapon upgrade away from the platinum but I really don't feel like grinding those damn mosquitoes for shards/chunks. It sucks that marrowstone is the only one in the game that doesn't have a treasure location other than the pure.

Something I'm wondering about Ostrava. I missed him the first time (didn't look down in that courtyard...frankly, didn't even know you could go down there at all) so I restarted and saved him. Now he's in the Nexus hanging out. But somebody told me if you ever go back to 1-1, Ostrava goes back too and you have to re-rescue him. Something about how you had to rescue Ostrava and beat the 1-1 boss in the same session within that world.

So does Ostrava keep coming back until you rescue him and "lock" him as rescued status by beating the boss? Or is he considered rescued as long as you got him back to the Nexus? I see that you get to rescue him (...again) in 1-2, but I've stopped playing because I'm about to kill the 1-1 boss but need to know if I have to rescue Ostrava in 1-1 again before I kill the boss. I don't want to kill the boss and then go to 1-2 and find out Ostrava died somewhere.

I want to start upgrading weapons for the trophies and haven't seen that discussed much. I'm just using the winged spear. Jodou, since you've done it, what weapons should I be upgrading to get the other trophies that won't interfere with the spear or the purple flame shield upgrades or anything else I might need for other purposes? Ie, are there any "easy" ones I can knock out now? I have rather large collectons of all kinds of stones from the first half of the game.

Until you beat the boss, Ostavia will reappear in the level everytime, and you have to save him. You can save him after you beat the boss though (for 1-1 at least, haven't tried it in any of the other levels)

The guide says that you don't want to rescue him in 1-2 until you beat the boss there too. I beat the boss and he's still in his little cage. I have yet to rescue him though I might do it tonight.

I died stupidly in 1-1 not too long after rescuing Ostrava and then he died fighting the respawn while I was fighting my way back to him. >_< By the time I got back to him, he was just a glowing Masoleum key. :(

Kinda bummed that I missed out on a free clearstone, but I don't plan to restart the game any time soon. Actually, if I ever beat the game, I might do a new game over instead of new game +.
So you save him and immediately beat the boss in 1-1, but beat the boss and then save him in 1-2?
If you save him the first time, he'll continue to reappear as an NPC "quest" (where he'll ask for assistance again) in different worlds, world 1-2 included.

If you're referring to why you should wait until after killing the boss in 1-2, it's mainly to improve his survivability later on in 1-3 (IIRC).
So you save him and immediately beat the boss in 1-1, but beat the boss and then save him in 1-2?
All I know is that I beat the 1-2 boss long ago and Ostrava is still sitting in his little cage. I never went down (from the other side) to save him. But I've gone into the beginning of 1-2 repeatedly to farm stones off the mini-phalaxes. He's there every time. But I think I will save him tonight.

Note that you can also not save him in 1-1 and beat the boss there first too. I went back and got him later. I was in his general area but never went over to where he was originally and he was still there when I went back well after beating Phalanx.

I think I figured it out. The first time you enter his area, he stands on that balcony and doesn't come down to fight until you clean out that initial mob keeping him up there.

But if you trigger him coming down, anytime you enter that area again, he will be down on the ground already, fighting enemies. I think this is how he is getting killed. He can take out the enemies near him just fine, but usually dies when he makes it to the blue knight's hallway.

Anyways, I saved him and beat the boss. I'm glad he's at least stuck in a cage in 1-2. I just fear going back to 1-1 to get past that WT gate, and having to worry about saving his ass again. I would think saving him once just triggered a script so he would no longer spawn in 1-1 anymore.

Hahaha! Went to 3-1 and used my Blue Eye Stone to help people out.

Ended up getting warped as a Black Phantom, which baffled me. I remember someone in this thread talking about getting warped like that though, so I geared up as the boss and got ready to try and kill that guy. He came through and I hit him with Poison Cloud. He starts beating my ass with some sword that makes me bleed. I fall back and cure the bleeding and my health. I cast God's Wrath and it missed. I think I'm screwed at this point but I remember I have my Scraping Spear equipped. I proceed to go on the offensive and break all of this dude's equipment. I can tell it's working since he's switching through numerous weapons. I got him in the corner and proceeded to beat him down. That was so gratifying, hahaha. I feel kinda bad for the guy since I broke all his stuff, but it didn't occur to me that that damn boss would summon me. Boy oh boy, was that damn fun to play as the stage boss though.

What other game let's you do that? I'm in love with this game.

Um, so, I was thinking of doing the 3-1 boss tonight. The walkthrough never said anything about other players coming in during that fight. Should I be worried?

As for Ostrava - ah, see, I never understood how he was getting killed in other people's games because when I saved him he was on the balcony waving his sword about and he never left there. I had already killed every enemy in the entire area.
Finally started the game, and it took me 3 hours just to beat 1-1, is that normal? =/
Can't say that it's normal (I don't know what is), but 1-1 is the steep learning curve for most. It is the trial by fire!

Yeah, no worries about how fast you're progressing. Working slower is better when you're first starting out, as too many enemies will really be the death of you.

And even with my research, I still die a lot due to stupid mistakes or nerves. >_<

Like just now, I died running across the bridge in 1-2 'cause I mistimed when to stop sprinting and got caught from behind by the very last bit of dragon flame before he flew off for another run. >_<

Oddly enough, I had no problem doing the recovery run and beating Tower Knight after that. :p

So I killed the Flying dragon finally (Thanks Saint) and now I have to fight the King any tips ? Also how do you summon someone to your world? I know if someone puts their blue stone down you can but I can never find those white symbols.

Don't the swollen bugs (idk wtf they are) in 5-1 also drop marrowstones? idk what's easier to farm. I guess they aren't till the middle of the stage, and the mosquitoes are at least at the beginning (after shortcut) of 5-3. I am totally NOT looking forward to farming for those trophies...

I can confirm that they do drop marrowstones as I got a few from there when I ran through 5-1 tonight (after beating 3-1 with little problem and no player phantoms summoned by the boss ;)).

I lost to Leechmonger though because I couldn't get his health down fast enough with heavy arrows or soul arrow. I got him about 2/3 down, but then ran out of stuff and when I was trying to use spices to get more magic he'd recover. Then I got knocked down low and pounded with leeches ;). The guide says to come back with better equipment, etc, but I'm not sure what to upgrade. I guess I can increase my magic power and maybe soul arrow will be enough. Or increase strength and buy a crapload of arrows.

Sharpstone and hardstone are by far the easiest. I got those knocked out without even trying. After that, it really comes down to how many times you've cleared the game. For me, some of them just came naturally because I'm on my 7th playthrough. I still had to do a bit of farming for half of them, but drop rates aren't too bad and most of them have mob spawns close to an archstone. The wiki lists what you can make with each stone type under the upgrade section, so I'd check that out first.

I got my first chunk of marrowstone last night out of all the bloodsuckers I've killed in normal clears. I think I'll need a total of 8 more plus all the shards just to get the trophy. Yeah, this is going to be a bitch. . .

I'm not sure what kinds of equipment you have, but he is very weak to fire. I used the lava bow with heavy arrows, and it took a while, but he went down (your safe from where you first enter. I think they sell "fire arrows" as well, and they might be helpful. Failing that, I would assume any of the fire spells would work pretty well on him, as would the dragon sword (found in 2-2).

I think so far my leading cause of death is falling off ledges. Quite possibly the most frustrating way to die, because you only have yourself to blame.

Two words: dragon sword. I just throw on warding and stab, stab, stab. It keeps it on the defensive so much that all it generally does is try to regenerate health. I guess a lava bow would work as well, but the sword is just wicked fast. If you're a mage, you can one-shot the boss using firestorm lol.

I think that sounds right, the initial learning curve is definitely steep. Half of my 3 hours was spent trying to kill two enemies that, at my level, I realized are impossible to kill. Once you really understand how the game works, which I think I do now, it should go faster.

And even though I may've wasted a little time trying to figure out the game, I strangely can't wait to play 1-2.

You can cheat by applying turpentine or black turpentine to a right hand weapon, then two-hand equip the bow with your left. The fire bonus damage will apply to your arrows.

As for ledges, the only time I die by falling off one is because of the horrible camera system or auto-targeting. Can't tell you how many times I go to lock on the OBVIOUS fuckING ENEMY in front of me and it locks on to something way offscreen just because it was closer. Sometimes it's trying to be helpful by auto-targeting the next enemy, but then turns me off a ledge. Shit like that pisses me off because it was beyond my control.

I think I killed the Dragon my first time through 1-2 with about 200 arrows. Took about 10 minutes but that bitch is definitely dead.

just started last night with royalty. man, that soul arrow is a life saver. i started out as a hunter with the import version months ago and died 20+ times in 1-1.... i've only died once so far

It shouldn't take you too long to get these if you backtrack from the Dirty Colossus archstone killing the mosquitoes as you go. Having the world set to pure black tendency helps with the drop rate on the stones.

Yeah, I know. I'm just going to equip my Large Sword of Searching and start grinding them tonight. I figure I'll just hop across that bridge you can knock down in 5-2 and farm the few that spawn there. I'm hoping it will take me an hour or less to complete since the hardest part will be getting chunks.

Have you increased your luck stat any? alot of people thought that leveling your luck to 8 had more influence on drops than people who leveled it to 99.

Congrats btw on your soon to be platinum. :)

I'm a knight (was that a mistake?) so i don't even know how to use magic, and i guess the bow could work, but i'm not sure how much damage it'd really do.

Just got my game. Deluxe edition = amazing. Seriously, for what I paid, $66 shipped, this is a fucking huge deal! 160-page strategy guide/walkthrough + the bonus artbook, plus the original soundtrack CD, oh, and then the game itself. Atlus continues to impress.

Other people invading your game only applies if you're at the 3-3 boss. The 3-1 boss is a pushover.

It's a little more tricky with the melees, but
after you kill all the archers, hang back to get a sense of his pattern, then when you're ready, use R3 to target his ankles. When you see the opening slash at them and eventually he'll topple over. While he's down, R3 his head for massive damage and repeat until he's dead.

Knights are a good class. I think they get a miracle early on.

A few tips
a crossbow can be found by the first blue eye knight. There is a break in the wall, fall over there and there is a crossbow.... however a real bow you can aim and zoom with so you can hit his head when he starts to move his shield.

I was a hunter and didnt have magic when I took this guy down so its doable... keep in mind you do not have to go from 1-1 to 2-1, the entire set of other levels are opened to you. I took out 2-1 and 4-1 I think before coming back to 1-2 and beating him.
Other people invading your game only applies if you're at the 3-3 boss. The 3-1 boss is a pushover.
Well, I was responding to a post where someone said they put down the blue stone to help with 3-1 and ended up being the boss fight in someone else's game. I checked it several times and they said 3-1 for sure. So I guess that was a typo.

Edit - Wait, in fact, that someone was you!

So while playing 5-1 last night I just realized there was something a bit odd. There wasn't a single white phantom or any bloodstains or messages while I was playing. And I was online for sure. Earlier (in the same session) when I was playing 3-1 I saw the bloodstains and messages but there was almost no one playing - but being really late Sunday night probably had something to do with that. But the utter lack of stains/messages in 5-1 was creepy.
