I made it through the first 4 pages of this sad story and wasn't going to flame the I hate GS fire. But I enjoyed the argument so I decided to chime in. Here's a list of who's at fault and why.
1. Murderer=Criminal=Felony
2. Accomplices=Criminal=probably a felony for murder
3. GameStop=Civil=Negligence + OSHA
First and most importantly, I feel it is in poor taste to use this woman's murder as another reason to further your personal crusade against GS. You hate GS for whatever reasons and that's you own issue but THIS CRIME was committed by the murderer and GameStop will be have to fight CIVIL negligence. And if you dislike a company's practices and policies, you shop somewhere else and voice your opinion with what matters most to a business: Money. I disagree with a lot of what Walmart stands for so I shop elsewhere and choose to spend more but they still have a right to make money from people who don’t feel as strongly as I do. I rarely frequent a GS as I have no need for them unless there’s a great deal and those are few and far between but I understand why some people shop there. The people who do not know a lot about videogames get what they consider better service there than at any of the Big Box retailers.
Now, like it or not a company’s only responsibility is to its shareholders. Social responsibility is a secondary thought for most companies and each struggles to value it and thus each values it differently. While it makes sense to have a multiple people in a high value target, it also makes sense to not have more employees on staff than you can afford. This is why during the slowest months (for retail, Jan-Mar and into April at times) it makes sense to not have a ton of labor costs and cut hours and people. Hello, negative social responsibility. But how many people would run a business that operates in the negative? Would you employ 3 people and lose $1,000 or employ 2 people and make $500? Would you run a store that wasn’t open whenever any customer wants to purchase a product and lose that sale to a competitor? Would you pay for security if it meant never making a profit? Every company is in business to make money, even non-profit organizations have to make money. The only problem I would have is if many of the executives chose to cut jobs or security to fatten their own wallets or if someone had some sort of prior knowledge and failed to report it.
The basic argument I keep seeing is that every store that uses a camera never gets robbed nor does any store that maintains multiple staff members at all times. While cameras and additional personnel may have been the answer to this problem, neither are an absolute deterrent. Cameras are used after the fact and would have helped catch the killer but may have not stopped this crime. If there were 2 people, a person could have subdued the stronger person first and you're back to just this woman. Then we'd say there should have been 3 people. If this person had enough desire to commit the crime they would have found a way to commit the crime regardless of whatever counter measures were in place. There is no absolute deterrent in a free society without removing the freedoms that make it a free society. Hello, ankle bracelet.
In my opinion, the missing merchandise makes it look like a smash and grab gone awry but murder and robbery are rarely connected so I still have my doubts about the real motive.
Overall, for me this is an anomaly which warrants me expressing my condolences for the loss this family has suffered and my outrage over what this person did and nothing more. This does not warrant me stating that society is crumbling or the gaming industry is becoming as vile and ruthless as the illegal drug industry or that any one thing could have prevented this. This is an isolated incident that claimed a young woman’s life and that is what is truly important.
