Around the Dreamcast - Ps2 age for those that are confused.

As for me mine would definitely be Shadow of the Colossus.

This game is gorgeous and the game play is pure genius. Who would've thought that only having huge boss battles would be enough for a game, and it's amazing how they make the boss battles become a worthy level of themselves. It's one of those few games that is so epic and natural feeling that you tend to forget you're playing a game.

*=the best game(s) of the generation hands down I think

KOTOR and Freedom Fighters both on the Xbox. I've went back and replayed both of those games in like the last month and they surprisingly hold up well. Man Freedom Fighters was REALLY good. Such a shame that the creators didn't do a follow up but instead make the craptacular Kane and Lynch. What were they thinking?

Super Mario Sunshine
Timesplitters Future Perfect
Unreal Tournament 2004
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Resident Evil 4 (no competition in my book) though the Wii version is better now that it is out.

A couple posts above someone mentioned Freedom Fighters. That is probably top 6 on my list (along with WindWaker, God of War II, Sly Cooper the 1st one, and Jak II). That game truly was amazing when I played it through the first time. Very underappreciated and I think it has something to do with being an EA game.

I'd have to say Phantasy Star Online for DC, and then later on GC/Xbox. Between the 4 versions (2 on DC and one each on GC/Xbox) I logged over a thousand hours of gameplay. It was a day one purchase when it came out on Dreamcast (also day one purchase on Xbox) and I couldn't believe how amazing it was. I only played the Gamecube version for a few months to tide me over until the Xbox version came out.

There were too many.
Shadow of the Colossus was the first game that came to mind.

Halo 2 and Disgaea are honorable mentions.
I salute you, Lieutenant Dan.

As for my honorable mention, I will have to say it's an early last gen title. It's one of the funkiest games ever made, and one of the characters is in my avatar....

Any guesses?

Glad to see skies of arcadia and shenmue getting some love here.

DQ8 gets my vote for last gen...it was the first time I felt like I was truly playing a classic 2d snes rpg in 3d. While some may take issue with that fact (ie simplicity, lack of ingenuity, etc), I for one absolutely loved it!

Soul Calibur 1 and 2
Metroid Prime
Eternal Darkness
Stars Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Okami
Final Fantasy X
Halo 1 and 2
Ratchet and Clank
Sly Cooper
Guitar Hero 1 and 2

I couldn't get into Shadow of the Collosus, but not surprising since I generally hate boss fights and it's a game full of them.

Last Gen isnt nearly done with yet.

Between Chaos Wars, Persona 4, P3:FES which are yet to come, and the recent Mana Khemia and Baroque, the PS2 currently has the best JRPG lineup of 2008.

I know, Nintendo Extended the life of last gen by at least 4 more years.

Mechassault

I will talk a little bit about Mechassault because I do not remember seeing it mentioned by anyone else. Mechassault was released roughly a year after the launch of the xbox; only days before the introduction of Xbox Live. The game featured controls that were incredibly easy learn which made it very accessible to pick up and play. The single player game was fairly short, but the online modes provided seemingly endless replay value.

I think the main reason why the game struck such a chord with me was Xbox Live. Coming from PC gaming, I had a lot of experience with multiplayer games. It was a complex process. Even today, when PC gaming, it can be a difficult and time consuming to link up with your friends, establish a form of unified communication, and find a room to meet up in. Xbox Live just worked.

Mechassault was nothing more than the right game at the right time. It was fun, simple, and competitive. Xbox Live ensured there was always someone to play against.

My personal top ten (off the top of my head):

1) Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2) - Revolutionary.
2) Skies of Arcadia (DC) - Personally special.
3) Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX) - Best videogame story ever.
4) Wind Waker (GC) - Perfect game design.
5) Halo (XBOX) - Was at one time the most polished FPS out there.
6) Resident Evil 4 (GC) - Best action/survival horror to date.
7) Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - Minimalist game design perfected.
8) Bangai-O (DC) - My favorite arcade style game...still.
9) Power Stone 2 (DC) - Mulitplayer bliss.
10) Halo 2 (XBOX) - Great multi experience until the cheaters showed up.
