Gears of War 3 - Release Date Sept. 20
Exactly. Epic's never limited maps to particular game types before, so I don't see why they'd start now.
They've also never sold on disc content, and they started now. I'm not complaining (I bought the thunderstorm and electric skin packs because I'm a whore)

But because the LANGUAGE of the press release never mentions versus, and the fact that it's called the "horde whatever pack".

Maybe they mean that they won't be part of the normal Versus rotation, like there will be a dedicated DLC playlist instead? Otherwise they'd have to kick people from matches when a DLC map came up that they didn't own.
Official comment is the maps will only be for player-hosted matches.
Link?

If this is true, Epic has completed the Hulk Hogan turn to heel/nWo of videogames.

@GearsViking Rod Fergusson
To answer a bunch of questions, Horde Command Pack maps are only available for player hosted gametypes like Horde, Beast and Private MP
@GearsViking Rod Fergusson
To be clear, it's called the "Horde Command Pack". The first DLC is mainly supporting Horde play, just like the second will be Campaign.
@GearsViking Rod Fergusson
Campaign DLC will include maps for public Versus play.
@GearsViking Rod Fergusson
The issue at hand here are the dedicated servers. Eventually you will be able to play DLC 1 maps publicly in VS but when is TBD (and TBA)
Guess i was wrong. This sucks, epic is really getting on my bad side ever since the Gears 3 beta. Everything from then to now just seems so fucked up.

I guess there is SOME good news...

GearsViking Rod Fergusson
For Horde Command Pack, only the player hosting needs to have the new map for all players to play on it.

Good for me, i will have them and most mutators. LOL

fucking lame! Just when you think Epic has fucked us enough, they pull in more shit.

----------

Are the character skins at least available for online non-private VS?

anyone know what the new update I had to download today was for? looked back a few pages and didn't see.... assuming it's just prep for this new dlc everyone is talking about?

1st map pack-horde
2nd map pack-campaign

Got it, thanks! I'll be skipping the dlc unless of course, I find them cheap on here or i'll wait for a sale instead. KB dlc (on disc) is not something i'm fond of and is a reason I don't support/buy certain games. I agree it's crappy the way Epic has turned things with their baby franchise Gears of War and they can't blame MS anymore.

By the way, went to jack in the box and won a gears 3 skin on my 1st try. Is that the same skin available for people who purchase the Season Pass or is it completely different?

Ouch, how strange for them to make that mistake. Maybe they'll change their stance after gauging player feedback.

Am I the only person who has the balls to not buy this DLC? Seriously?

To any dumbass who replies that they're fine supporting Epic, that makes no sense. Epic from Gears of War gave you free maps to keep the community alive. They even intentionally let it known that the second map pack for Gears of War, which cost $10 at the time, was going to become free in September (because Halo 3 was coming out, so the community would see a drop). It was a thank you for playing online, and a way to interest new players.

That's the company you support. Not a company that intentionally withholds content. Bernie is a playable character in Campaign. The Onyx Guard are featured in Beast. Rustlung and Azura are on the game disc, and the Silverback can shoot rockets in Campaign, yet it's intentionally withheld in Horde to be bought as DLC.

And I'm telling you how to spend your money because how you waste it fucks up my game play. Rewarding them only encourages it in future titles, and with other game companies. Even Rod Fergusson said they're doing it because it's a new industry standard. Pay attention and quit being part of the problem.

Thanks for putting us up on game 7th. I wouldn't be so skeptical/critical of developers these days if they didn't make it so damn easy to be. Sucks for you early SP adopters BUT it isn't as if the warning signs weren't written on the wall across from jump street. I'm sure the worst is yet to come because the current climate of the gaming industry is a joke.

Nickle and dime, check.

Abandon or take your core fanbase for granted, check.

Dilute or modify core game mechanics to the point where your franchise barely adheres to the lore or game play of the first game for easing in new mone- er players, check.

Ah well... not much we can do about it now that these types of practices are close to growing root. It is what it is. I just hope those of you that buy this shit get your money's worth and not dare complain or act surprised when it finally affects you.

Looks like noobs have a new trick... 1. throw a smoke. 2. rush with SOS. Works like a charm, at least against me. Today ive been playing horrible, ran into too many SOS abusers. I quit a few matches, i cant play this game and have fun when noobs are running around with their hand cannons. I just love being blown away by the SOS from 5+ feet away. Melee range my ass.

Yeah 7th, since only the host needs to have the maps for people to use it, I'll have to hijack er...play with you on Live in order to see them :)

Went to Jack in the Box, got 2 codes, only 1 Skin Pack.

Not to be a dick, but this seems like the easiest "trick" to get away from ever.

Just roll away from the smoke before it detonates. If it does detonate and you can't see and you know they're close by, why even stick around and find out if they have the SOS?

If you get hit by a Smoke Grenade, you can't roll or climb over cover. You can move, but given the situation there's about a 75-80% chance someone can come in a SOS or Chainsaw you and you're screwed.

Well even if its not even close, sometimes you cover up and can only walk for 2 or so seconds. Not able to evade or run. Then they just run and pa pow.

I understand. I play the game daily.

What I don't understand is how you even get hit by that "trick" enough to bring it up to a message board.

I probably get affected by a smoke grenade once every 15 games, that is FULL games, not rounds. If I see anything thrown my way, I roll the fuck away.

From my personal experience the cringe effect (duration as well) of the Smoke Grenade is definitely affected by radius and lag. Some times it requires pinpoint accuracy to get a cringe. Others you can eat them without consequence. The smoke itself can also mirror that of the indisputably overpowered rag dolls; once detonated they can still enact a cringe if you walk anywhere near the blast radius.

Not a big deal as I use them often for aggressive pushes or to safeguard retreats. Any serious tweaking would probably render them useless. They aren't anywhere near as bad as frags in this game by a long shot and those are only irritating when the team you are stuck on isn't picking them up. at. all.

Oh, and this video should be fuckING MANDATORY for new players. Period. You should be locked out of multiplayer until you watch it:

Why are you such a developer apologist? I can remember multiple games that you've defended while a large portion of the community was upset or angered.

So glad I didn't waste money on the Season Pass. I was right about to buy it when I heard about the DLC but if you cant play the maps on Versus then there really is no point. I really don't understand how Epic could have changed so much since they released Gears 2.
Why are you such a developer apologist? I can remember multiple games that you've defended while a large portion of the community was upset or angered.
I just agreed that the matchmaking thing is bad and you're still calling me an apologist. :p

When it comes to games, I'm an optimist. I love Gears of War 3. It makes me happy, and the new maps will probably make me happy too.

SOS are annoying but there are some ways to counter them. What really is annoying are the people who use the Retro Lancer+Sos. The Retro Lancer needs to be toned down on how much damage it does. With just a couple of shots and you're done.

One thing I miss from Gears 1 is the ability to set up a map rotation for private matches. I wonder why they took that out since it was such an awesome feature.

I can't get this to work 100% of the time. I haven't heard anyone else complain about this but smokes act as shields sometimes, bullets do no damage. I just emptied out a clip of the retro lancer after this guy threw a smoke near me and he took no damage as he was walking through the smoke, rushed me and shotgunned me.

That is so lame; what possible reason could they have for doing that? Even segregating the playlists is a better option than just closing the maps to Versus games.

Guess I'm an ultranoob, because I've been doing the smoke/SOS since the beta. I had no idea people got upset about it. I've had people do the same thing to me with the gnasher too.

I see it as a perfectly viable strategy, especially 1v1 when they're just hanging out in cover. If they get hit by the smoke, boomsplatter. If they run away, I try to lancer them down. Either way they don't get to just hide in cover while I walk up unprotected. What else is the smoke good for if I can't use it in that fashion?

I miss that too. I cant imagine what the negative to leaving that feature in would be.

well thats shitty so we're basically paying for two DLC characters?

Apparently during the six games I played last night I reached the cap for connecting to servers in my region. I've lost all interest in fighting to remain positive in P2P games of any kind. It's a fool's errand. You've got a few months left to address some of glaring problems in your game before you permanently lose a fan, Epic. Not that I suspect you care much. Your new audience still loves you.

Wow i dont mean to bitch, because i hate being negative, but it sure seems like the servers are down. Because im getting downed by as little as possible. I gnasher a guy twice in his chest point blank and he doesnt even go down. Shit like this has been going on the last few days. I gnasher a guy 4 times, he gnashers me twice i lose. Before that i was always competitive, and had good scores. Lately ive been doing bad, and worse. I cant explain it other than the servers have to be down.

I threw a smoke at this one guy, ran up the stairs, he covers up and 0.5 seconds after he can evade away. WTF is that shit? I hate thrashball map, i hate sandbar, overpass is a bad map, all the rest are pretty good though.

one guy threw an ink grenade at me yesterday, for the first time ever I wasn't able to move. i felt like he throw tar at me and was able to run up to me and gnasher me. every other instant of being ink i was able to roll away after being hit but not that time.

playing this game alone is boring me and playing online people quit early(or a lot) i wish i could join a horde mode at a specific wave

Anyone want to run through a few Arcade chapters on Insane tonight? I only need five more and it's starting to get frustrating joining a ton of matches waiting to get the chapters I need. :p

ETA: Nevermind, got 'em. :D

I don't understand people who quit Horde before wave 8. Why even bother joining the mode if you're going to quit out so soon?

Yesterday I had two guys quit before Wave 15, and the remaining two were friends who thought it was hilarious to take my Silverback and get it destroyed, or literally block my shots when I was trying to complete the waves. They were pissed because I finished the last few waves with over 20 kills. Fortunately, one of them got downed and I actually lured a Ticker over to blow him up. That was when they quit.

They need to allow you to repair the Silverback with Y without needing to leave it.

Sorry, that post sounded sarcastic to me.

I learned the hard way that even if the silver back blows up, you can still repair it after the round is over. Because one time i saved enough to buy it, then it blew up, so i thought it was gone. So someone repaired it and used it. lol. I dont think you need to get out to repair it, but it does risk it getting stolen. I mean you have to let go of a turret to repair that. Its similar to that.

I was excited for the pack until they said it would be private matches only.

Sucks because Blood Drive was one of my favorite maps in Gears 2.
I played against a guy with the gamertag L6W and his medal was an Epic Games logo. Must work there. I think his profile said Ohio, and epic games.
I played against either employees or friends/family of them a couple of games ago. Both players had me MAD jelly sporting their static transparent blue and red Gnashers. He confirmed later in a message they are indeed an Epic exclusive. Sucks the only skin I'd actually consider paying money for will never be available. God was it f*cking sexy. I wish they made it a ridiculous in game unlock. ;\

What new audience?

So apparently they're now saying that the new maps will be added to public versus at some unspecified future date. Seriously, how hard is this? You have two choices: 1. Lock the maps out of public matches unless everyone in the lobby has them. BioShock 2 showed that this is bullshit. 2. Create a DLC playlist with the maps in rotation, that you can't access unless you own the DLC. Yeah, splitting the community kind of sucks, but that's the only way for it to work. What is Epic still trying to figure out?
What new audience?
Me, for one. But I don't play the versus and probably never will. Ok, I'll probably try it once, but I don't really enjoy competitive multiplayer in these games. The campaign was good fun co-op with friends and last night I finally tried Horde mode and that is really fun with friends. I'm very happy with the game.

Yeah, I think you proved my point.

I don't think there is such a thing as a new audience for versus Gears.
