GTA:LCS: most frustrating game ever?

I borrowed Liberty City Stories from a friend. I must say, that after about 3 hours play time, I am glad I didn't pay for it. Although, it may cost me a PSP, as I am about to throw mine through the wall.

The game is good, but missions are hard already. I did 'smash and grab' about 20 times. It took me about 8 attempts to get Vincenzo's car, then I died driving it to crusher, and I hadn't saved since before smash and grab, so now I have to do that again.

The reason I hadn't saved, was because of asinine process of driving through city to your apartment, to save. Also, when you fail a mission, there is $$$ penalty which is fine, but then to start the mission over you have to go back to V's shop, and lllloooooaaaadddd the cut scene, skip it, llllllllloooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddddd world, then drive to mission, start mission. Even if it just restarted me right after I walk of V's office, this would have made _huge_ difference, as it saves two loads, and a taxi ride. But this feels like a game cart from the 80's, where there is no save.

Another design flaw is the Paint and Spray. I failed the one damn mission so many times, I had no money. So when I got to paint and spray, nothing happened, and I died. Poor design. The missions are punishing enough, and there is enough there is no need for a militant save system. Whoever the producer/designer was on that game, obviously didn't spend any time playing it.

What makes it even more frustrating, is that the actual game play is good, characters good. I can see myself really getting into it (never played GTA before). But ultimately,
I think that the annoyances are going to prevent me from playing any further. I am going to rip the UMD onto my memory stick, and see if the loads are bearable then.

Sorry for you lovers, but I had to vent. Venting must be therapeutic, as my desire to smash my slim has lessened.

I am still playing this game, not very far but further than you.
I had only played the original GTA3 before I picked this one up, but never got far because I found it boring. I like LCS more because of the things you mention, the characters & story.
Since you've never played a GTA3 game, I guess it gets some getting used to the save system. It is a bit dumb, but if you play it long enough you don't even notice it.

Really, if you stick with it (assuming your PSP survives), it gets better and the problems become less noticeable. I found the game got a lot more interesting ...
when your mom hires hitmen to kill you. I loved the fact that they chase you at all costs. Hilarious!

A hint, if you do one of the many side missions like selling cars, driving a taxi, etc., you can also earn money. This may make the game a bit easier.

BTW, bought GTA:Vice City Stories for $13CAN at Walmart, can't wait to start that one next :)

Vice City Stories is much better- Bigger City, save points at almost every corner, and the missions are much easier. Plus when you die you can buy your weapons back that you had when you died immediately instead of having to drive to ammunation all the time.

GTA LCS is very hard, in fact its frustrating at times. Do yourself a favor and look up a weapon cheat code, I gave in about 4-5 hours in because I was tired of driving to AmmuNation or Reloading a previous saved game.

It henceforth made it a more enjoyable experience, since just having the weapons didnt detract from the fun really, just the annoyances.

I wish I could find my GTA LCS, I'm not sure if I let somebody borrow it or what. I know I never beat it, but I don't remember where I got pissed and quit at.

Oh right, when the 2.0 downgrader came out and my save file was erased.

Your problems are pretty much the same as everybody else's. Supposedly its one of the greatest series out there Having to save at hideouts and not having enough money at the beginning is something that has frustrated many. It however is not a reason to throw away a psp. Its something you have to get used to. doing side missions helps with the money problem. Also ripping it to your memory card does help you with load times quite a bit. Keep it in iso format because when you compress it the frame rate slows down quite a bit when there is alot of things going on around you.

I actually stopped playing VCS because of those damn helicopter missions, where you have you carry a car or something while chasing some dude while the cops are chasing him. Uggh. The controlls were terrible for that.

LCS was a really fun game. Some of the missions were a pain in the ass though. That's how all GTA games are.

The hardest missions in Liberty City Stories are much easier than some of the end game missions of GTA3.

As far as the characters go, the character in LCS is also a complete tool that never has the balls to stand up for himself and I thought was the weakest main character out of all the games. VCS is a pretty fun game, though there's some awkward missions.

I started playng this recently, too, getting back in the mood for GTA with #4 on the horizon. Not to be a dick, but I'm surprised you're finding that mission so difficult. I had read your post before playing it, and was dreading it based on those impressions, but I completed it on my 1st try, without much difficulty. I'll admit, I have an upper hand since I played the hell out of GTA3 and know the map rather well.

I agree with some of the other posts, side missions and saving often help avoiding the situations you've encountered. I honestly reset every time I lose a mission/die/etc because I hate losing all of my weapons.

I redid a couple missions, the other night, and got back to where I was before that untimely death. Did both mission on first attempt that time.

I also discovered an exploit on the mission where you have to return Vincenzo's car: You can ditch his car, and keep getting new ones until you get the heat off (Paint and Spray). Then drive back to where you ditched it, and finish the mission without the cops bothering you.

I have a feeling I will likely abandon this game. It just feels like it would be funner on a console. I have GTA4 preordered, and only have to wait another 5 days!

I'm stuck on the mission where you have to guard the casino and the gang is on their way to blow it up. I always get stuck trying to get the truck far away enough from the casino because of all the cars in the way. Still love it though.

I beat GTA: LCS and GTA: VCS on the PSP... No complaints really except for maybe one or two annoying missions in GTA:VCS near the end.

I think VCS is better than LCS because it's simply tuned better. The advantages have been mentioned but I think it just plays more accessible. Then again, some people don't want this. The majority does though, and VCS sure is less frustrating, so I can't blame them. (All GTA games are frustrating at some point, in my opinion).
