Guitar Hero II - General Disscusion - Indie Pack #2 - 3 Songs Up Now

Info from Kotaku re: new tracks....

Pearl Jam - Life Wasted

Rick Derringer - Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo (Hooray! Let's get the Mean Gene version though)

Deep Purple - Hush

Rancid - Salvation (well...there are more offensive Rancid songs, so I won't gripe)

The Toadies - Possum Kingdom

My Chemical Romance - Dead! (they just had to shoehorn them in there  )

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
At about 30 minutes deep into my Games For Windows and Vista meeting, I heard a familiar riff coming from the next room. Cheap Trick's "Surrender" shook me almost awake (no coffee at this point) as I realized the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II was being played less than ten feet from me. While the Uno demo via Live was certainly interesting from a technical standpoint, all I could think about was when I'd get to try out that new white guitar controller and try out some new tracks.

Following my brief meeting with Peter Moore and Aaron Greenberg—more about that later—I was given the opportunity to play some games. What did I want to play? Lost Planet? No. Crackdown? Maybe later. Blue Dragon? Pass.

I needed to see Guitar Hero II in HD and click-click my way through some fresh songs.

The demo was two-player co-op. I took guitar, my guide took bass, and we burned through "Life Wasted" (as made famous) by Pearl Jam. Near the top of the set list, it was almost too easy on Hard. But since I've not heard a new Pearl Jam track in about five years, the newness of it gave me a bit more challenge.

I also started to notice the graphics. They've added some nice bloom lighting. Depth of field. Higher res menus and interface. For a game that's known more for its solid gameplay than its graphics, this game was starting to look damn good. No one will hem and haw when asked whether it trounces Gears of War graphically, but it definitely looks like an upgrade.

We only had time to make our way through a few other tracks. "Sweet Child O' Mine" just for fun. "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" (as made famous) by Rick Derringer and "Hush" by Deep Purple because they were brand-spankin' new.

The new guitar controller feels good, with the fret buttons feeling just a bit more solid than the PS2 version. I'm not sure if this was a design change or just a guitar that hadn't been broken in, but the Microsoft rep agreed. They felt just slightly different. Hammer ons and pull offs were just a bit easier for me, which I came to know intimately during my bass duty on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo". I also noticed that kicking on my Star Power was iffy, not unlike the controller that came with my copy of GHII.

The demo on the show floor also features Rancid's "Salvation" and The Toadies' "Possum Kingdom", but the following tracks were just confirmed by a Microsoft PR person.

Other tracks I didn't get a chance to try out included "Hush" by Deep Purple, "Dead!" (emphasis theirs) from My Chemical Romance and "Billion Dollar Babies" by Alice Cooper. That's a fairly solid line-up, with some tracks still to be revealed.
So we've got more on the way.

So we've got more on the way.

Silence with the MCR hate, The Black Parade was a great album.

although I would have preffered they use Famous Last Words, that song kicks ass.
Silence with the MCR hate, The Black Parade was IS a great album.

Fixed.

Anyways heres a small update from Teamxbox.com:

TeamXbox was also told that three of the remaining five exclusives are Possum Kingdom (Toadies), Salvation (Rancid) and The Trooper (Iron Maiden), all of which will be part of the main gameplay. The remaining two are currently unannounced, though they will only be unlockable through gameplay. Additionally, Dead! and Possum Kingdom will be “master tracks,” meaning that they’ll be the respective bands’ original recordings, rather than the studio remakes that make up the rest of the tunes in the game.

I wouldn't have known the Toadies' song had it not been playing on the TV as I clicked this link (I keep VH1 classic on while I work).

Nice to see we're getting bonus tracks. Nothing for me to be blown away by (I would have preferred "Run to the Hills" for the bassline, simple as it may be), but I'm not gonna complain - 7 more tracks for an already stacked game is great. Now if we could figure out if we're getting GH1 tracks, and their pricing - if it's right, I'll just outright sell GH1.

My Chemical Romance - Dead! (they just had to shoehorn them in there )

I can (very) begrudgingly accept this commercially-motivated 'necessary evil', as it is just one song, but what's worst about it, to me, is that it's probably the 'beginning of the end' for this series' respectability. With MTV now owning Harmonix, expect worthy true rock to be the exception, not the rule, from here on out. Also, expect lots of Fall Out Boy sort of shit to replace it.

And a preemptive "fuck you, too!" to those angered by this post.

The Trooper (Iron Maiden)

fuck yes.

Like Myke, I just want to know if we're getting Guitar Hero 1 tracks too, so I know whether to start packing my GH 1 and 2 to sell it.

It will really get bad when they put bands like Sum 41, The Donnas, and Franz Ferdinad.

wait a minute....

edit: what it needs is Metallica and I know its impossible to get them (how long did it take for them to get on iTunes?) but If theyre going to sell the X-plorer with the game it only feels right to have SOMETHING Metallica.

heres to GH3!

It will really get bad when they put bands like Sum 41, The Donnas, and Franz Ferdinad.

For what it's worth, all three of those bands are at least twice as 'rocking' as the polarizing band revealed today. While The Donnas' lyrics are atrocious, if you strip away the vocals, you (usually) have a very compotent-sounding (and 3/4s hella-cute) AC/DC wannabe band. Sum 41 have always made their '80s-metal fixation clear to anyone listening (probably for cross-generational commercial gain as much as sincere love, but whatever). And Franz Ferdinand, well, they're sassy, but they make bookstore employees want to dance...or at least wonder if they want to...do they, do they want to?

EDIT: Concering Pearl Jam, "Go" would've made a good choice for guitar/bass interplay, although it probably would've been a bitch to 'play'. "Do the Evolution" would've been a good choice for an easier song, but that song and its video are inseparable in my head.
Needs more QotSA.
Too true. No One Knows is my favorite track on the first Guitar Hero.

I'll buy the 360 version when:

a)A wireless controller is available

b)A QotSA song is released on the marketplace

I'd laugh my ass off if they released a track from Rated R (or even their self-titled).

Robotic guitar riffs = Severe Carpal Tunnel

Oh, shaddup.

You're ignoring the fact that, whether or not you think they're a good band (and, cute doesn't come across in a game where they aren't seen at all), all of those bands (and more) were *the* hot thing at the time GH1 came out. Others were, too (QotSA...err, I'm having a hard time remembering the songs). It's not as if The Donnas were chosen because of their complex guitar stylings.

Likewise, a game balls deep with Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and whatever other guitar-hesher wankers you'd rather see wouldn't sell. In the end, I don't like those Peppermint Patty-haired motherfuckers any more than you do, but I won't act as if (1) the game would sell if they offered nothing but guitar classics *I'd* rather hear (if you can play one Exploited song, you know 'em all), and (2) that this song is a sign of impending doom for the "authenticity" of the series as a whole.

In short, cut the alarmist bullshit. The sky ain't falling.

I'll wash your car for a month, however, if "The Cheetah Girls" ever make it onto a Guitar Hero game.

That Pearl Jam choice is pretty disappointing. I couldn't even figure out what song it was until I realized it is on the new album. Not the most exciting song to play... especially when there are so many great guitar tracks by PJ.

Say what you will about My Chemical Romance, they have some super-fun guitar stuff going on. I guarantee Dead! is going to be a blast to play.

I love you people who bitch about the GH games having pop-rock acts on it. You know, that's what sells. And if GH1 hadn't sold, then you wouldn't have had a Guitar Hero 2 to begin with. Sorry, not everyone wants to play some obscure 19 minute metalcore song that you think is so great.
I just wish they would announce a price for the game............

But Im getting it now matter how much it is
I hope it doesn't top $89.99, but am skeptical that it will retail for the same price as the PS2 version.
Needs more QotSA.
They already had their one alotted song.

As for people bitching at song choices, play them first. You'll be surprised that songs you didn't expect to like can become faves quickly.

so true, I dont like The Donnas, but "Take it off" is one of my favorite songs to play.

Great news on the new songs being added to the 360 version.

A friend of mine called me today at work, pissed that the 360 was getting "The Trooper". Go Maiden :)

I am happy to see that they chose a Rancid song off the "Let's Go" album. It's hands down my favorite Rancid CD.

Glad to see there will be more songs on 360, esp. the trooper. As soon as GH was release it was only ever going to go downhill. Any good game to do with music will only make companies jump on the wagon and internet people argue about the music. Love the games to death but it is one of those things that will turn into GHXIL:Now thats what i call music 712: john mayer remixes.

Nothing surprising, but online leaderboards confirmed:

Quotes like that make me sad for current and future generations, and I'm not even THAT old. It's only downhill from here.

The Dwarven One speaks true, we likely won't see as much of the all-over-the-board appeal of the first two games from here on out. We'll get thrown a bone here and there, but some of the more inspired/what the hell? selections from the first two games may already be going the way of the dinosaur.

I'll keep my fingers crossed; I'm sure that will make a difference.

I can't wait until they put Panic! At the Disco on there.

Just kidding, but it does desperately need some Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.

HOLY SHIT! I didn't notice the Maiden track until after my earlier post!

sdgdsgkHGKNDNHSDH. I'm buying two of them just on principle. Not only did they get a Maiden song, they got one of the best.

This makes up for just about every "I wish they had (insert band here)" gripe I've had in the past.

Between these bonus tracks (and that fact that a few are yet to be revealed), the cooler looking controller, whatever online features they get in there, and the fact that you can download all the GH1 tracks so you're not swapping discs...daymn. This will be the game to have until Halo 3 comes out.

I would have preferred something off of "Ten", but that's just because I'm old school like that (or maybe just old...period).

I'm a sucker for late 80's/early 90's rock.....

Here's hoping for some Def Leppard and Poison in GH3.

I'm looking forward to guitar hero for the 360 but I'm not exactly musically inclined. Maybe if they include any song from The Shaggs I'll be okay.
I would have preferred something off of "Ten", but that's just because I'm old school like that (or maybe just old...period)
Nah, you're not wrong. Pearl Jam was one of the few bands that broke the "snooty music elitist" rule: they were actually better when they were popular.

yeah i think it will retail at 90.00 because of the "next-gen $10 tax"

Boy, I really, really hope not. It is, after all, a port of a PS2 game with some new content and a more subtle kind of graphical upgrade, as I understand it. If Microsoft/Harmonix/Whoever-the-hell-owns-the-franchise-now is smart, they'll keep the pricepoint at $79.99, because otherwise people might just stay with the PS2 version. Hook us with a 'fair' price now, and then make up for it with microtransactions and 'expansion packs' (like the '80s-only disc EGM is strongly hinting at this month) in the coming months.

It's only a $10 difference, but $80 is already quite a bit for a game. With each incremental increase over that, that many more people will just say "No".

P.S. And for your penchant for antagonistically oversimplifying things to get a rise out of people, VanillaGorilla, I've now hit the "Mute" button on you. Goodbye, and good riddance to you and your Bad Day L.A. (?) avatar.

Right sorry for forming my own opinion of a band you people hate and refuse to listen to because "Theyre on MTV"

and just to clarify, Im not in love with the Sum 41's and the All American Rejects of the world either, Im a big old school metal fan, but Ill be fair to the bands and form my own opinion of them rather listen to guys on a message board tell me why they suck and shouldn't be in a video game which they are huge fans of and gracious enough to give the master recording to.

Well, listen to what you want, 'enjoy' what you want, but just know that the last half-decade has to be the worst in the fifty-plus year existence of rock and/or roll, including all of its genres, subgenres, and hyper-hyphenated-hybrid-genres. Why? It's not a matter of 'elitists' or old fogeys (like me!) not 'getting it' anymore, but because what you're being fed is exceptionally watered down and castrated by corporations. It isn't a subjective issue, because 'rock'* is a more scientific equation than ever.

Sure, there's still good music out there, but it's not made by 'Hot Topic' bands that soccer moms and vapid suburban teenage girls alike can tap their feet to. You have to pretty much conduct an excavation to find it. Welcome to a world where basically half the nation thinks that American Idol winners qualify as 'musicians' and 'artists'. I really thought that Blink 182 was as bad as it got in terms of bitchboys playing 'punk', but they look like fucking Ride the Lightning-era Metallica next to today's Clear Channel-approved shit.

*--And hip-hop, and R&B, and country, I suppose. But rock has fallen the furthest.

I agree with the point you brought up about music in general going down the gutter (id venture as far as to say real metal died in about 1990) but some people take this "main stream commercialized music" thing too far to the point where they wont like a band anymore because theyre on MTV.
id venture as far as to say real metal died in about 1990
And I'd venture to say anyone who thinks this is retarded.

Can we save our self righteous crusades for another thread? This is supposed to be about how awesome GH2 is going to be for the 360. The Trooper!!

If the bitch and titter fest keeps relevant to Guitar Hero, fine.

If you want to insist that "Krokus" and "Grim Reaper" were the pinnacles of metal, and that today's music is just a bunch of pre-fab poseurs (and deny the rich and luxurious half-century history of prefab bands and music), start another fucking thread.

I'll be glad to tell you you're wrong, there, too.

alright then back to GH, Im hoping they'll be reasonable and at least price it at 80.00 like the PS2 version, but why would they if we would all just buy it at 90 anyway?

edit: wow I just listened to the tropper again, the solo is going to kick my ass I can feel it.

Via Joystiq (taken from GI's preview). They mention that a distortion pedal may be introduced in the future

I've been looking for something offical but all I've found is this:

As for the downloadable content, Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360 will have themes, pictures packs, and songs available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Guitar Hero II is rated T for Teen and will be available this March.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6163929.html

That's from today. It mentions the 5 specific songs that we already knew about as well. I hope that Red Octane sells them in 2 player bundles like they do with the PS2: http://www.redoctane.com/store.html
* Big Spender: Spent $10,000 at store
Hope that they don't mean $10K on the marketplace ;)
