Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App Review & Price Drop Sites

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, theres is usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy alot of apps.
 6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a pernament feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site at http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
T:S seemed to have the best shooter controls thus far. I was thought I liked the controls for Prey but after playing T:S I can't go back. Still it's $.99 or nothing.
Better than Wolf3d?

@RollingSkull

Waze is a free app similar to trapster. It's open source and community based, so the more people that join and post, the better it gets. Apparently it also does turn by turn but I haven't really used it.

Has anyone else tried Zen Bound? It's like if thatgamecompany (flOw, flower) made an app. Kinda pricey ($4.99) but very nice.

Another question, my iPhone only seems to want to see ONE of the custom ringtones I drop on it at a time, no matter how many are on there, only one shows up in the menu. Any advice?

My first gen ipod touch also had home button issues. It didn't completely quit, but I had to press the button hard to get it to register. Seems like may the 1st gen design was problematic that way? I've got an iPhone 3GS now and must admit that I'm always just a touch worried when I press the home button that it's going to prove not to register, though it is working fine so far. Hopefully they fixed that issue for good.
8bit one is going to go back up in price once september is over so get it for .99 while you can.
back up to $6.99 already.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but I believe you can use your already made character on a higher difficulty once you beat it.

The game plays REALLY well though. I know I just got it, but I'm close to saying it's my favorite app.

Wow, Dungeon Hunter does look good. Of course, I've been blowing my load on all these $.99 - $1.99 games lately. Maybe I'll try to be patient and wait for a drop... :(

Alien Glyphs is on sale for .99 from 1.99. I just played it for 2 hours straight, absolutely addicted. It has OpenFeint integration for online leaderboards and achievements.

The game itself is incredibly satisfying and actually makes me feel like I'm getting smarter as I play (like Brain Age for the DS). Basically, there's a board of unusual red symbols that you much tap to match as blue versions of those symbols start showing up at the top of the screen. As the game goes on, more symbols are added to the red section of the board and (if you're unlucky and get a penalty) the board starts shifting around to keep you on edge.

The game is best played like the great puzzle games of our time: in the "zone," where you're not even really thinking anymore, but purely reacting. Once you start concentrating, you're dead. You just need to react.

Absolute bargain and extremely polished (auto-save on exit as well as a really cool feature where it updates on how close you are to beating other people on the world leaderboards AS YOU PLAY!). Thumbs up!

Anyone know if Dungeon Hunter has a Newgame+ feature (replay the game on a higher difficulty level with your character)? I think I saw someone on touch arcade mention it did not nor did it have different difficulty levels. Would be nice to know for sure. It seems like its one of those Diablo style rpgs where you would want to grind through all the difficulty levels.

I never got around to finishing the Everquest Action RPG on PS2 or even playing more than 15 minutes each of Titan Quest and Diablo. I'll pass on Dungeon Hunters, even though it looks quite quality. Gameloft always brings the good shit to mobile phones.

Question, is there anything close to a Double Dragon-esque brawler on the iPhone? Also, recommendations for games that are simple, easy to play with few fingers, turn based, paced like a board game, but have enough strategy to be engaging. Mancala is working that for me now, but I was wondering what you liked as far as stuff you could play on your iPhone whilst multitasking.

Not really Double Dragon like, but there is Karate fighter, which is basically a clone of the old arcade/NES Classic Kung Fu (Master)

Backbreaker looks pretty crazy - except for the epilepsy inducing trailer... =P

It's like a driving game w/ a running back! =D

Amazing catch with blue block. That game is spectacular. Just needs a built in iPod function as well as a hint and it'd be better than perfect.

Totally not a game, but I think the average CAG could find DropBox very useful.

From the site:

"Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers.

Put your files into your Dropbox on one computer, and they'll be instantly available on any of your other computers that you've installed Dropbox on (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!) Because a copy of your files are stored on Dropbox's secure servers, you can also access them from any computer or mobile device using the Dropbox website."

You get 2 GB of space for free and have the option of getting more with a monthly fee.

They just released their iPhone app today and its pretty damn spiffy. Example CAG usage: maintain a text file of lists of clearance games and keep it in your dropbox, then you can access from the phone any time you want. It even has sharing options, so you can share that kinda stuff with fellow CAGs.

Again, its not a game, so sorry I'm OT, but I've found the service/software to be really really handy (and now with the iPhone app, it'll be even more handy).

(if you sign up through my link, you get an extra 250 MB of online storage space and so do I)
Blue Block is free for a limited time.

It's fun if you like those rush hour puzzle type games. It sucks though because I just bought this a couple days ago...
Thanks for the heads up. Just grabbed it and it seems pretty good (especially for free).

these won't all be exactly like double dragon, but ya know, they should appeal to you anyways.

The Revenge of the Mad John

"don't be a pussy. fight for your woman!" arguably one of the better app taglines. this one harkens back to the days of motion capturing live people and pasting them into the game. day one purchase for me. coming in about two weeks. i love that there's a platform that exists this day and age where stuff like this can still come out by basement developers.

Not a game, but Motion X GPS Drive is pretty amazing. In many ways better then the big guns due to being Bing Maps based with live maps, points of interest, etc. I.e. It's exactly what I wanted - a bit like the google maps app, but with voice navigation and a 3D view. Unlike tom Tom and navigon, it isn't a massive download with inherently out of date maps. And it's cheap. $3 gets a month of voice navigation (30 days), so you only pay as you need it. There is a year of voice nav option too, the price of which is escaping me at the moment. It's not perfect, but it is great and worth the $3 admission (which gives you 30 days of voice nav).

How does it handle if someone calls you?

I think that's why the other GPS apps download everything to your device, so you can still make calls.

I don't know precisely that as I haven't received a call yet while using it (I actually don't get many calls at all on my cell phone - I mostly use it for data). However I did try quitting the app and relaunching. It then immediately re-routes for your destination and continues on. It does cache your route to cover for blind spots, but I'm not sure yet if that allows it to re-route when you quit and relaunch without needing an internet connection, or if you need an internet connection when it tries to do that. This will be tricky for me to test out in the short term, but if I can I'll give it a shot.

I've used it a few times now (though not a real need for it yet, just seeing how it would handle my usual routes) and it has performed with aplomb. Also it has good iPod controls including the ability to make a new playlist. Slick!

The magnetic compass on the 3GS still sucks balls, though. Don't buy a 3GS for the compass! :) Good thing it also uses the GPS heading to get your compass direction.

The best thing about this app is that it doesn't rely on an out-of-date database and the points of interest come from bing (like google), so they cover everything. Need to find a nearby Game Crazy, Walmart or a Gamestop specifically? You can search for that and then navigate to it. Sweet. The ultimate cheap ass gamer tool! :)

You could always just create a route, dump out of the app and put the phone in airplane mode, and then re-open the app . . .

Anyone want to recommend a tank wars style game? I downloaded ishoot (lite) and just now I downloaded Pocket Tanks.

Is there any others I should look into?

I picked up "Hi, How are you" and I'm really enjoying it. It's like a mix of frogger, qbert, and mario IMO. You control a frog looking character and you have to light up all the green tiles in a level while avoiding obstacles in the level. Game had me pretty addicted for about an hour. Well worth the $.99. It has tilt or touch controls your choice.

Plants vs. zombies is officially coming to the iPod touch? I'll wait then, but I really they don't gimp it like they did with Peggle (no music and no sign of the long-promised update that would add it.)

wow i never even noticed that peggle didn't have music, I always have my own music on when I play it.

Thanks, everyone. I downloaded Alien Glyphs, Blue Block, Ragdoll Blaster and Bakcbreaker Football.
So far, Alien Glyphs is decent, but gets boring pretty quickly. The Engrish is funny (I think a Russian made it). Blue Block, on the other hand, is insanely addictive. I did the first 20 puzzles nonstop, parring each one, and I'm not sure I ever blinked.

Well, I disagree. The music was an integral part of the game experience IMHO. I don't enjoy it nearly as much without the music. To make matters worse, the reason they had for it's removal was to get the game to fit in the limit for downloading over the cell network. Only one problem - it is still too big to download over the cell network. Oops.
