This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
    iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

I love old school C&C. I tried the lite version and didn't like it that much. The screen is kind of small of this game. I thought is was hard to tell what was going on.
I'd like to know the same thing. I saw that Undercover had more reviews than Shift, and both have an average of 4 stars, so I went with Undercover. Now I see IGN found the controls better on Shift. I might need to go back and get that as well :(
Undercover is more fun. I beat it and then played it more. I got bored quickly with Shift. If you want a more sim-ish racing experience you should pick up Real Racing instead of Shift. If you like it more arcade-y and enjoy the drifting part, get Undercover.
seems like i get the shaft with OS 4.0 with a regular 3G

oh well
Well at least you don't have an OG... :(
Anybody have Command and Conquer Red Alert? I've read some reviews but wanted to know of any of you guys have it and your impressions.
i bought it today but didnt have a chance to load it on the phone before i left for work. Ill let ya know what I think after work today

Aw crap. I just went to a wifi spot over lunch and bought Shift as well.

Oh well. Like others have said. It was a DOLLAR :)

since this is an ipod thread...anyone watched Dexter season 4? I watched 1 & 2 on netflix and bought season 3...loved the show so much, and anxiously awaiting seeing season 4, but it doesn't come to DVD release until september, but itunes has season 4 for sale for only $22, while the DVD release will likel;y be $35-40

is it worth it to have the season but a digital download?

Shaolin Training is FREE for today and tomorrow (http://itunes.apple.com/app/shaolin-training/id376614521?mt=8)
"Shaolin Training is an 3d Action game based in physics simulation and intense dynamic.

In Shaolin Training your objective is quite simple: All you have to do is push down all Boxes and crates that you can find in the cliff arena.
The only problem is that while you do this, you have to dodge deadly cannonballs and traps!"

Not a game, but a potentially useful app called Tie-a-Tie Deluxe is FREE for today only (http://itunes.apple.com/app/tie-a-tie-deluxe/id288658977?mt=8).

Did anyone else go nuts with folders? I ended up with almost everything on the home screen being a folder, but then realized I wanted quick access to my most used apps and so scaled back a bit.

One great thing in iOS 4 - background loading of tabs. Yeah! I mean if you open a new tab and the page is slow to load, you can switched to another tab and the background one continues loading.

Anyone having a problem with iOS 4 should try doing a restore. That may resolve the problem. Be sure you let your iPhone/iPod backup before restoring, though!

I went nuts with folders too. Folders make up all but my first page.

...I really wish Puzzle Quest 2 was on iPhone right now!

anyone else have a problem with OS 4.0 wiping out your contacts.

it should prove interesting to see how long it takes till I get them all back

loving the folders. so much less clutter. ive tucked away a number of un-deletable apple apps and many more apps that i dont use on a regulary basis and/or cant bring myself to delete. down to 3 pages of apps, thinking of going down to 2.
anyone else have a problem with OS 4.0 wiping out your contacts.
nope, but even if it did i have all my contacts backed up on my gmail.

Hmm, not much on the free apps today for me. When it comes to OS 4.0, I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon. I have a 3G and don't quite have the time in to get the cheap upgrade. My current setup with SBSettings and CategoriesSB my folder setup is much more fluid and can hold more apps compared to a buddies. I know not everyone is in the same situation but for me the benefit isn't really there. That and I use iPhone tethering all the time and don't want to lose it.

Oh man, I loves me my folders! I literally spent hours last night grouping and categorizing things. Unfortunately, I have over a thousand apps at the moment (yes, I know. . .I should seek professional help) so I've barely made a dent in organizing everything. My big goal is to actually open up and evaluate every app so I can figure out what's worth keeping and what gets trashed. Some things are a no-brainer, but I've picked up so many freebies this year that I haven't even looked at half of them yet.

When you do a firmware upgrade it wipes everything. It is up to you to use iTunes to back all that info up.
seems like i get the shaft with OS 4.0 with a regular 3G

Yeah....if you have a jailbroken 3G you can already do everything and more than iOS4 allows you to do.

I guess my assumption of "backing up kurrpt's iPhone" was that it actually do something that was worth it.

i might look into the jailbreak thing
i have a question about Shift,are the controls tilt based or can you have like a virtual d-pad/analog?
Tilt only. You have options to turn brake assist on/off and can choose auto or manual transmission.

I wish iTunes had a star system next to the application list, so that we could all rate shit, just like we can with songs.

anyone own Sim City? All the crash reviews are making me wary even though it's only a buck.
So if you want to make folders just tap and hold an app till it wiggles and then drag one app into another and it'll create a folder which you can name/rename. The only problem is that the folders fill up and can only hold 12 apps in all. Which is absolutely assinine. The first one I tried making wanted to call itself GAMES ... Do they have any idea how many fucking games they've been selling!? So what's next? GAMES2, GAMES3, etc.

I don't know, maybe I'll try alphabetizing them. A, B, C, etc.
I believe the default name tries to reconcile the categories from the app store so if the given genre labels don't match it just goes more generic. I had a couple of the default names that were keepers (Arcade and Strategy, I believe), but it's unrealistic to expect much more than that, just think of "Games" as the new "New Folder".

It took awhile but all of my less frequented apps are now in folders, including several folders of unplayed freebies that hopefully will motivate me to go through and sort out and possibly delete some of them every so often.

EDIT: Thanks for the Roll Through the Ages recommendations. Not the most videogame-like translation of a board game, but it's a solid addition to my pass and play collection and isn't bad for solo either. Not to mention considerably cheaper than the physical set (although I'll likely be purchasing that now in the near future).

Hell hath frozen over! Peggle 1.1 today! Background music is *finally* there. And it supports iOS 4 multitasking! Woohoo! Took too damn long, but at least we've finally got it. Now I can go play the game. I had stopped, waiting for this update. Yes, it was a long time! :)

I did the same thing. Wound up buying 6 EA titles. Been waiting a while on some of them.

Look out for Dragon's Lair. On os4, the controls don't show up. This, obviously, renders it totally unplayable for the time being.

Well that is screwed up.

found this in another CAGs forum and figured it would be very pertinent here.

Super Monkey Ball $4.99--> $2.99
Sonic the Hedgehog $5.99 -->$3.99
Super Monkey Ball 2 $5.99 -->$3.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 $5.99 -->$3.99
Streets of Rage $2.99--> $0.99
Golden Axe $2.99 -->$0.99
Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Ed. $7.99--> $4.99

This sale however, wont go on until TOMORROW, JUNE 23 to Weds JUNE 30. So its a week long event. Apparently its for sonics birthday.

Funny just today i thought that super monkey ball never goes on sale and here it will be.

fuck! I'm trying to backup my apps to my computer and they won't transfer!! I think I just lost Espgaluda II, S&P I & II, and a couple of others. DAMMIT.

Don't worry about it - you can redownload them for free. It won't say that they're free initially, but after you click to confirm the download it will say you already purchased it and that the download will be free. Dumb, yes.

Because of this awesome EA .99 promo, i snagged tiger and i really like it. I am seriously considering getting madden. I already own nba live FREE and i was wondering what the difference was between the free one and the paid one? Thanks

Free is like a demo. I downloaded the lite version a while ago but I believed you could only choose between the Magic and Lakers and only play 1 or 2 min quarters.
anyone own Sim City? All the crash reviews are making me wary even though it's only a buck.
I've played it a bit, having purchased it when it came out and then waiting to actually play it until around a month or two ago, and it actually seemed very stable on my 3GS. If you notice, many of the really negative reviews are from when it first came out, so they may have worked out some of the issues with it. I have a feeling alot of the crash issues with games on the iphone have to do with the 1G, 3G, 3GS differences too ... so if you have a 3GS it should be fine, from my experience.
anyone own Sim City? All the crash reviews are making me wary even though it's only a buck.
I've had it for a while and I have never had an issue with the game. I'm running a 64GB Touch.

Free App a Day is featuring Fart Battles today. . .er, that's the app not the real thing (http://www.freeappaday.com/napp.php?id=210).

OpenFeint has Jewel Puzzle Blocks for its freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/app/jewel-puzzle-blocks-unblock/id342973294?mt=8).

Great App a Day is showing the previously-posted Shaolin Training (http://www.greatappaday.com/details/shaolin-training/).

Free App Calendar has the iPad-only bitFLIP: HD (http://www.freeappcalendar.com/details.php?id=207). I have the regular bitFLIP on my iTouch and I still play it quite regularly. I may go ahead and snag this just because I know I'll eventually get an iPad, too.

Just bought Madden last night and was pleasantly surprised by it, other then the animation it's just about the same as the console versions!

I picked up Need For Speed Shift for 99 cents. I haven't generally been happy with motion controlled racers on the iPhone, but for 99 cents I'll give this one a shot. Now I'm downloading Sim City for another 99. Might bite on Madden, but I haven't really been a fan of modern football games, so I'm not sure on that one.

Tiger Woods is indeed quite nice. I haven't played it in a long time, but I played it quite a bit when it came out. Solid game, and definitely a steal at 99 cents.

EDIT: also download NBA Live Free and N.O.V.A. free to test those out. Note that the free version of N.O.V.A. has an in-app purchase to unlock the full game, but at least current it isn't 99 cents, rather full price. Maybe later?
When you do a firmware upgrade it wipes everything. It is up to you to use iTunes to back all that info up.
That isn't true. If it were it would have taken me hours to update. It only took 15 minutes or so. It replaces the firmware, but it doesn't wipe anything out. Actually, it did mess up my photos like somebody else mentioned, but the photos were there, it just seemed to need to rebuild the optimized versions of the photos for some reason.

And I'll reiterate - if you're having problems with iOS 4, trying restoring. Plug in your iPhone/iPod touch, select it in iTunes and on the first tab, click the Restore button. Now, make sure you let iTunes backup your iPhone first!! Restoring *does* wipe everything out.

How's the control for NOVA?
I've tried the lite version and I thought it would be fun if I get used to the controls but I'm not quite sure if I could get used to it.

What do you guys think of the controls?
N.O.V.A. has dropped to 99 cents to celebrate the iPhone 4 launch!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/n-o-v-a-near-orbit-vanguard/id343596730?mt=8
They have dropped more than just that... I don't know if there is an official list out yet, but some $0.99 are:

Gangstar
Brothers in Arms 2
Uno
Assassin's Creed
Real Soccer 2010

and plenty others (but still no sale on The Oregon Trail :( )

I don't pay close enough attention to Gameloft prices so some may have been $0.99 for a while.

NBA Live sure is choppy. Also it's a sports game. I'm glad I was able to test out a free version. These modern sports games I just can't get into. I wish they'd release Tecmo Bowl for the iPhone, with online play (and hopefully better then the online in the Xbox version!)

What would really be awesome is a sale on The Oregon Trail. I don't know if it ever went on sale prior to my purchasing of a Touch, but it is the only game I really want that has never dropped (unless there was some magic stealth drop).
And James Cameron's Avatar dropped $2 to $4.99
Tempting. Demo was pretty good for an iphone game. Must check that gameloft sale. NOVA is the best FPS on the iphone, so if you like the genre, at 99 cents, its a true steal. Brothers in Arms 2 is also definitely worth the 99 cents.
