There was no one out this morning and my building seems empty... WTF? This has to be the 4th or 5th time this year...

People get off work for that? Ugh. I mean, if you were in the armed forces or something then OK - go have a drink with your buddies - either that or someone call the head of my stupid company and tell him to give us the day off too.

ZOMG -- U dont suport our troopz!?!/1

But yeah, today is basically a mail holiday. Move along, nothing to see here. This is not the holiday you are looking for.

Buy a ribbon, without a ribbon you are a terrorst.

edit: For clarification, I think the best way to celebrate Veteran's day would be to bring everyone home to enjoy it.

Veteran's Day is not a bullshit holiday. Maybe in the fact that not everyone has it off, but we owe a lot to all the vets who've served our country well.

Shieryda,

I wonder if it's the term bullshit here that you have more of an issue with with the holiday. I think most people use that term when it's a holiday that the vast majority of people don't get off, you barely hear anything about it, yet you show up somewhere and they are closed, making your life a touch more difficult.

Should Veterens have a day, sure. I think either close everything or close nothing. Also, call it bullshit or not, but wouldn't more people consider the day after Thanksgiving or the Friday before Labor/Memorial Day a bigger holdiay than Veterens Day? I think so, and that says a lot about it. Only slighly higher than a Columbus Day, since the auto industry in Michigan gets it off.

I'm not complaining about Vets getting two days, but of the two, Memorial and Veterans, Memorial day is more celebrated -- even though Memorial day is technically for dead veterans, at least in my experience, live vets get respect on that date too.

That is what was implied, yes. Our country has some crazy holidays, but the vast majority of people don't "celebrate" them as you would a holiday such as Christmas or 4th of July.

The day after Thanksgiving is not a holiday. It's just a marketing ploy designed by retailers to get more people to take the day off and spend their hard-earned dollars in their stores.:D

I took that to be the point -- a non holiday gets more attention than THIS holiday.

Also, Veteran's Day was yesterday.

Today is just a nice way for gov't employees to get a extra day off.

Agreed. My father was in the Air Force for 20 years.

Well, you can say what you want, the day after Thanksgiving is more of a holiday to many people than lots of others. Also (love it or hate it), it's a day that plays out differently than most "work" days. Many people are off. Even if you work, it's usually a much quieter day. People wake up early to do things they normally wouldn't. This really has all the hallmarks of a holiday, and a widely celebrated one.

No. A "holiday" to me has some religious significance, or has to do with our country's founding or historical significance on a global scale. In other words:

4th of July
Thanksgiving (not the day after)
Christmas
Easter
Memorial Day
Veteran's Day
(did I leave any out?)

The rest I don't really consider holidays, but I'm not gonna complain if I have it off!:D

If you're from Europe or Canada, I guess you would call a vacation day (or any other day off) a "holiday".
The best way to remember our vets is to give government employees the day off.
Yeah, I guess that's the best way to remember MLK Jr. and Chris Columbus, too.

MLK was a communist and Christopher Columbus didn't discover shit.

While I do support all the troops or whatever, the thing that sucks is my company has a Canadian branch and today is Remembrance day for them and they get the day off but we don't for Veterans day, what kind of logic is that.

When my dream is realized and this nation observes Festivus with a day off, you'd better NOT create a thread about that!

(The above post is not intended to disrespect service men and women, currently serving or otherwise, but instead is meant to slightly diffuse the tension inherent to this topic and to get a cheap plug in for Festivus*.)

*--It's for the rest of us!

Tell me about it. Our headquarters is in Munich, Germany. Those bastards get like 3 times the number of holidays and vacation days that we do.:bomb:

Woah, this is definitely what I meant. No disrespect to the Veterans who definitely deserve to be honored every year. I'm just pissed I didn't get the day off. ;)

I know. I'm giving you shit.
I'm laughing at all the poor saps that have to work today. Sometimes I love having a job with the government.
Feh, at least the traffic was light. I'm looking forward to the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend! :bouncy:
