Should Veterens have a day, sure. I think either close everything or close nothing. I'm not complaining about Vets getting two days, but of the two, Memorial and Veterans, Memorial day is more celebrated -- even though Memorial day is technically for dead veterans, at least in my experience, live vets get respect on that date too.
